Denon 587 receiver.

I have my PS3 and HD-box connected to my receiver via Toslink.

Note that I only have 2 speakers and a sub...

While watching blu-rays, I have my ps3 set on PCM so I can get uncompressed audio but only in 2 channel. This is fine but what mode should my receiver be on?

If it's on Stereo, am I getting digital audio?

If not, which is best? I have a number of options such as Stereo, 5.1, dolby digital, Direct, Virtual surround etc. Not sure how these modes differ.

thanks.

thanks. You need to set your receiver up properly for 2.1, as having only the 2 front speakers and sub connected. Then, you need to pass bitstream (assuming the PS3 can do that via Toslink), not PCM, via the Toslink connection. For DD5.1 material, the receiver should be set up to automatically apply DD5.1 decoding. Same with DTS5.1. I think all you need to do is set it to AUTO.

If you pass 2-channel PCM to the receiver you will not be able to get true 5.1 sound.

Would this even matter if I only have 2 speakers? Would I even be able to hear "true 5.1" in a 2.1 system?

I guess the real question is...does 2 channel uncompressed PCM sound better than if I were to bitstream into 5.1?

If you want to maintain the LFE channel, you need to decode at the receiver. I do not know what the PS3 does when it downmixes 5.1 for 2-channel PCM output. It may drop the LFE channel.
