So here's the deal. I have an old receiver/amplifier. Its older, so the only outputs (to the speakers) are standard +/- speaker wire. I would like to hook up a powered subwoofer to it (it has its own power cable). The subwoofer takes a 3.5mm jack as its input, but the receiver only has outputs for the +/- wire. How can I hook these up together?

You need a speaker-to-linelevel adapter for each channel. Commonly available, usually for automotive audio.

IMO... if the "subwoofer" has a minijack input, it's probably bass module for a computer speaker system. I wouldn't even consider using this with even a "low end" HTIB let alone an old AV receiver.

+1 big time.

This "sub" clearly isn't something that belongs in a home theatre.

First off, is the 3.5 mm jack mono or stereo?

Secondly, whichever it is, get a cable for it, cut the other end off the cable, strip the wires inside the cable, and attach to the +/- terminals appropriately.
