View Full Version : Marantz 11S1 vs jvc rs10
CADOBHuK 02-17-09, 09:05 AM The JVC has much higher on/off while marantz has better ANSI and sharpness, I know that much.
But which one looks better overall? Can Marantz be placed against the middle of the screen (shelf mounting) ?
CADOBHuk,
I have the Marantz shelf mounted in the back of room. About 12 feet away from a 92 inch screen. Yes the Marantz must be center positioned to the screen. There is no horizontal shift at all on VP11S1, only vertical.
scottyb 02-17-09, 04:26 PM But it does have verticle lens shift.

Center positioned in terms of vertical placement, against the middle of the screen height? Isn't there any offset?
What kind of drawback to the RS10 image does the low ANSI contrast cause, and is the low ANSI observable compared to the best of the DLP projectors?

No just center positioned horizontally to the screen. You can mount the projector flush to the ceiling if you like or place it on a small stand in the middle of the room. It has plenty of vertical adjustment for the picture to be moved up or down.
I have not spent much time viewing the RS10. Saw it once on display a while back along with the RS20. With the higher ANSI contrast of the Marantz you will see more shadow detail in darker scenes. Where as with the RS10 you will get deeper blacks, and some slight black crush where the finer details will not be as clear as with the Marantz. This is only my opinion. Others would gladly give up a little shadow detail to get deeper blacks.

I think a lot of LCOS owners will disagree with this. I've always seen more shadow detail on the JVC's compared to any 1 chip unit.
I would recommend seeing them both. I'd bet you could get some serious fire sale prices on the S1

I have seen both and I see finer detail, textures, and other subtle details in clothing, hats, dark alleys, etc on the VP11S1, as compared to the JVC RS10. I am not saying that the RS10 has bad shadow detail, it's just that I watched the same demo material on both and found the shadow detail to be better on the Marantz. It is subtle, and not night and day by any means, but I do see the difference from the Marantz to the RS10.
Of course on the other hand the Marantz can't compete with the deep black levels of the RS10. I think most people will want the projector with the deeper blacks. Although I feel the Marantz has very good black levels, if they are viewed side by side there is no doubt the RS10 will go deeper than the Marantz.
CADOBHuK 02-17-09, 10:54 PM Does the marantz appear a lot sharper, does it have more "pop" ?

IMO the Marantz is very sharp, but the RS10 is almost equal in this regard. This is assuming that there is no MC on the RS10. FWIW I think the difference in sharpness between the two is very minor. In other words I wouldn't get hung up much on the sharpness. The RS10, having the deeper blacks, will have more POP or 3D look than the Marantz.
scottyb 02-17-09, 11:41 PM I always thought that DLP had more "pop" than LCOS. if the brightness is close to the same.

I guess it depends on your definition of "Pop". If you talking about the effect of the picture looking "3D" or very crisp, like a bright red car against a deep inky black night sky then I would give the edge to RS10 and LCOS technology in that regard. The Marantz and some other DLP 1 chip projectors IMO tend to have a a very dynamic picture. Great mid brightness and a very striking picture, that could also be defined as "pop". Some people find the DLP picture to look a bit hard, with a lot of strain on the eye, and some what lacking in the on/off contrast area. I do not consider this to be an issue. I guess both technologies can have the "pop" effect. I think most people will like the effect of a very bright foreground against a very deep black background. In this area the RS10 would be strong competition. I still like the effect of the Marantz. Like I said though this is just one mans opinion.
I guess it really depends on how you define Pop.
