View Full Version : office video distribution - random input/output onthefly config ?

(no comments/answers in the video distro forum - just wondering if anyone here has information - thanks)

Display setup is as follows:

- three 30" LCD panels, in a typical "triple-head" arrangement on desk

- three 50" LCD panels off on the wall, in a similar arrangement

So, six displays total.

On the back end, I have a _variety_ of computers and game systems. Here is a sample:

- SGI workstation with three DVI outputs (triple head)
- Sun workstation with three VGA outputs (triple head)
- Mac workstation with four HDMI outputs
- various other sgi, sun, PC and video game systems with various outputs (vga, dvi, component HD and 240p RGB)

The problem I have is two-fold:

First, I have more outputs (probably 18 ?) than I have displays (6). Certainly I could manually move cables, or perhaps add some intermediate line switchers, but that brings us to problem #2...

Second, there is NO set "profile" or configuration that I commonly use. That is to say, it's NOT a given that if I use the SGI I just put all three signals onto my three desktop LCDs. It's entirely possible that I would want to view the center SGI desktop signal on my center screen while at the same time retaining my two flanking Mac signals on the two side screens.

Or I might be using the triple-head Sun on my desktop screens, and then decide to move the left-hand sun output up to the middle large panel on the wall, and opening up one of my sgi displays on the middle desktop screen.

So I am not just looking for a switching solution, because that implies that there are certain, fixed combinations of outputs that I always use.

Rather, I am looking for a "box" that will take all of my inputs and give me six outputs and let me re-arrange them, on the fly, in any order I choose.

Does such a device exist ? What are these things called ?

Thanks.

...What are these things called ?...

Matrix switchers. I would look at both Extron and Barco product lines. They both make premium grade equipment. Keep in mind is that LCD panels only give good results when run at their native resolution. If that is not the same as what is being put out by your computer equipment, then the display unit will scale to fit. Typically looks pretty bad, and you might decide that you need scaling equipment in addition to the switcher.

great - thanks so much.

Most of them do not support high resolutions (2560x1600) but there is a new one:

http://www.christiedigital.com/AMEN/Products/ChristieVistaURS1608.htm

that does support very high resolutions, etc. God only knows what this thing costs...

Thanks again!

Should have also mentioned AMX (Modula) and Kramer. For high-end SDI based interfaces only, you have the likes of Evertz, Miranda, etc. Didn't realize that you were looking for that high a resolution, but now that you mention it, your Mac is probably running dual-link.

Thanks for that Christie link. It's dated Jan 2009 so the product is obviously brand new. 900W and 3000 BTU! I'm going to post a heads up over in the Ultra High-End forum for the finatics.
