View Full Version : Long delay after pressing the xbox button

One thing I've noticed in the past few months on my xbox is that there is about a 10 second delay after pressing my xbox button (either in game or on the dashboard). To be more specific, I press the xbox button and the grey popup comes up immediately, but there's a period of about 10 seconds before any type of information pops up (ie, friends profile info, etc).

Has anyone else seen this problem? Is that just the way the system works now, or is this possibly a function of:

1. amount of hard drive space used (I now have a 120GB drive and only 50GB free, so maybe the hard drive is slower?)
2. Amount of friends on the friends list (maybe with larger friends lists, the thing takes longer to popup)
3. Is this something that just started happening after the latest dashboard update a few months back?

Is anyone else noticing this, and is there any possible fix?

Yes, it seems to be tied to certain people's gamertags (mine included).

Here's a previous discussion thread on this problem. (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1118444)

It's usually caused by the network, but try deleting the cache first. It worked for me like a charm.

Disable auto sign-in and shutdown the console

Boot the X360 (but don't sign-in) > System Settings > Memory > Highlight Hard Drive and press Y > Then press X X LB RB XX and select Yes to preform maintenance on the HDD > Restart the X360

See if that does the trick

have you tried the defrag yet?

360 has a defrag?

since when?

As far as I'm aware, the X360 doesn't require a defragmentation tool.

Would you like your Xbox 360 hard drive to run a bit faster? Well, thanks to Bethesda Game Studios, there is a fix to do just that.

Apparently, this results from long load times for the newly released Elder Scrolls Oblivion. However, this fix should help load times on your other 360 games too.

Here's the scoop:

"Oblivion uses the Xbox 360 hard drive extensively to cache (copy and reuse) game data. This is done to optimize all loading the game does. It has been found in rare cases on some Xbox 360's that the cached data can get overly fragmented. This exhibits itself by the game taking a long time to load anything from menus, dialogue, sounds, objects, levels, and more.

To solve this problem, reset your Xbox, and hold down the A button as the game is booting up. If any button is held while Oblivion is loading, it will clear its hard drive cache, and create a new one. Once you see the “Bethesda Softworks” logo video, the game is already loaded, and the cache should have been cleared.

Note, this does not effect your game in any way other than loading. You will not lose any saved data."

No way of defragging that I know of.

^^^^

I'm sorry but that method only clears the cache used/stored by Oblivion.

To completely clear the cache, the use has to apply the method above

I never said that doing what I posted cleared the whole cache. I just thought it was interesting that you could do that with oblivion.

I gave this a shot last night. I didn't have much time to game... but it did seem like it might have improved the issue.

I don't know yet, but thanks for posting this -- it's worth it trying for those having this problem. I'll post back once I get more time with the console.

I did this as well and did see a pretty drastic improvement. Now, instead of a 10 second delay, I'm getting a 2 second delay.

I'll take that, but I've still seen other peoples' menus popup faster. Maybe the 120GB drives just have slower seek times or something.

I had the same issue. It was really bad in game to try and send invites as the screen would lock up and prevent sending invites. Checking messages was equally impossible in a pregame lobby. My situation started right after release of the NXE so it wasn't something I picked later.

I tried the cache clearing and it was a temporary fix. Did some searching on the webs and found many reports of this slowdown. Most stories attribute the slow downs to game installs on the HDD. I had something like 40-50 gigs of space left and had the freezing. I deleted some less frequently played titles installed on the HDD and tested to duplicate the issue. After the deletion I have not experienced the slow downs. The trick from the stories I read was to not have greater than half the HDD space used. I think I'm at about 63 gigs of free space.

When the cache clearing affects wear off try the HDD deletions to recover some space. Makes all the difference in the world.

Good luck.

not true... i had 2 games installed on my 20gb, which was nearly 100% of the available space.... never any slowdowns.... IIRC both fable 2 and gears 2 take up 6.8gb EACH, so i was clearly maxing out my free space, nothing else would fit on the drive aside from my gamesaves (removed all old arcade games, demos, dlc and video)

forgot to mention that this was typical for 120 gb hdd users too. sorry.

so you can buy a larger drive to install more games, yet you can't install more games.

glad i got the 60gb instead
