I'm choosing between both of these remotes. I know the difference probably mainingly the RF and IR capabilities. But which would likely work for me? I have the following things

Sony XBR4 LCD TV
HTPC Antec Fusion
Xbox 360 elite
Onkyo 706

The HTPC to my knowledge is an IR receiver. Will the One remote work? Also I would like to use RF to control lights and other junk that would be nice. But does the One remote have the same capabilities by using the IR? and if so, where would I get the modules to control lights? Also can someone explain what the extenders do anyway?

From my understanding the Harmony remotes will not work with the home automation gear. You would need something from these guys http://www.universalremote.com/product_detail.php?model=157

But, I could be wrong, one of the remote experts will chime in.

And I will say, I am the happy owner of two Harmony One remotes, and the WAF is through the roof, one remote. They play well with all of my gear, including my Apple TV and Mac Mini. Just no RF. And I have read that the Harmony 890 is not that great of a remote, allot having to do with its charging base and battery.

That's a really generic statement. Harmony works with almost all IR devices, so if your HA gear works with IR then Harmony should work fine.

I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend the 890 for controlling third party Z-wave devices, the fact it works with other Z-wave devices is more of an afterthought than main selling feature. If you want to seriously get into HA, you'd probably have better success with a Pronto or URC. For IR only systems, Harmony One is a good remote. The 890 does fine with one extender but it gets complicated if you're getting into HA and third party RF devices.

An extender receives RF signals from the remote and converts them to IR, thereby eliminating the need for line of sight to control your devices.
