Don't know much about MP3s but I'm going to ask you a stupid question anyway. Are your MP3s in MP3 surround format or just stereo. Also, there's a guy at computersudiophile (http://www.computeraudiophile.com/) that is very knowledgeable in computer audio. Might want to post there.

I don't think flac is going to be 5.1 either. Its format is very similar to mp3 with much less compression.

No compression, actually. I've had great success encoding my DVD-As to 5.1 FLAC using DVDAExplorer. I wish I could post some links, but I don't have any at hand right now. I have my on-board sound connected to a set of Logitech surrounds (Z-5500 is the model, I think) via 3 analog cables as well.

Actually flac is a lossless compression. MP3 is lossy. Both are usually 2 channel (stereo).

Sorry about that. You're absolutely right. FLAC IS compressed, but lossless, as opposed to MP3 which is both compress AND lossy. Most FLAC is 2-channel, but 5.1 seems to be becoming a little more popular on some popular download sites. I like it a lot for my DVD-A discs. The sound is fantastic, and I can play it on any of my network attached PC's.

try this, it'll matrix the stereo into multi channel. Free for 14 days and then worth the $30 after that.
