View Full Version : Buy new 2-way splitter and cable?
rjones416 02-18-09, 03:04 AM I'm still using basic cable that connects a coax cable to the wall outlet from the tv but they are from like 15 years ago. I'm wondering if replacing them with a newer splitter and coax would help improve the signal?
I think the splitter says 5-900mhz and the cable says 59/u coax. All the coax cables i see look different than mine. Mine has the silver end that has to be screwed in. I'm not sure which one to get. For the splitter I see the holland one is good. Does it matter which one? Because theres a bunch of them.
Thanks

Do all of the channels look bad?
More then likely your signal is not very good, I would remove and reseat all of the connectors.
Do a flex test (grab the end of the cable and flex it, one at a time) and look for any change in the picture.
If you notice any change I would replace that cable.
I would definitely replace that splitter. If it is that old and it's a 900MHz splitter, odds are that it is just epoxied and does not have a PCB design.
As for the cable, unless it is defective or is substandard in construction (RG59 is fine for jumper cables), there is no reason to replace it.
rjones416 02-19-09, 09:58 PM Ok so the problem used to be that tv#2 showed great while tv#1 was terrible and unwatchable.
I figured out the problem, the cables were connected to the wrong inputs on the splitter. tv#2 cable was connected to the in, while tv#1 and wall outlet connected to the out.
The new problem now is tv#1 shows great while tv#2 is great too except for a few channels.
I bought a new splitter which is 5-1000 which is better than the old one but I noticed it has 4db, shouldnt it be 3.5? I also bought a short rg6 cable and it might of helped a tiny bit.
I'm guessing the reason why tv#2 is weaker is because its connected to a 50 foot rg59 cable while tv#1 has a 3 foot rg6? So I'm thinking about trying the 50 foot rg6 to improve tv#2's signal. Should that help or is something else needed?
thanks
At 750MHz, the 50' length of RG59 loses ~3.5dB, while the 3' piece of Rg6 loses less than 0.2dB. Yeah, I'd say there's a bit of a difference there. Fifty feet of RG6 loses ~2.8dB.
The loss through splitters increases as the frequency increases. There's nothing at all wrong with that splitter indicating a 4dB loss on each leg.
What's wrong with the pictures on TV #2. Is the problem with the local channels?
rjones416 02-20-09, 12:45 AM I noticed its the lower channels that arent great like from 2-22 after that it gets much better. Most of them are local and a few are from the states. I'm in Toronto Canada. The worst one is the tv guide channel which shows a mixture of both channel 5 and 6.
Inspect the connections on that cable to make sure that the center conductor is not too short. It should be sticking out the end of the connector by just a little bit (no more than 1/8 inch). Also look at the back of the splitter. Is it soldered or does it appear to be epoxied?
rjones416 02-20-09, 01:11 AM The center conductor sticks out 1cm and I think the splitter is soldered. Its "ideal" name brand and people in Canada say its pretty good. Antronix, regal and holland aren't sold in stores here.
Its this one

Poor lower channels suggests a center conductor problem somewhere. Possibilities include: Short center conductor at a connector, female connector that has spread and is no longer making contact with the center conductor (either at the wallplate, inline somewhere, at the TV set itself, or even the splitter).Try switching around the cables on the splitter and see if the problem stays with the same TV or of it moves to the other TV.
rjones416 02-20-09, 07:38 PM Something probably was wrong with that cable but anyways I bought a 50' rg6 cable and now tv#2 is perfect even channel 5 which was the worst one by far. Now I noticed tv#1 lost a little bit of signal but its ok tv 2 is more important.
Tv#1 is connected to a different cable I got it from the cable guy a while ago and all it says is 990063 cm, cmg c (etl) us or catv (etc) us18 awg. Would it make a difference if I replaced it with rg6?
thanks
