View Full Version : HUD's
joebloggs13 02-18-09, 11:44 AM Good day all, I am looking for children's games that have no HUD's. I have a six year old girl that likes to play lego indiana jones and kungfu panda. The problem is that she tends to wander off, leaving everything running. I know I am being overly cautious with my 50" plasma, but hey, can you blame me? So, anyone know of any good games that fit the bill? Thanks in advance. JoeB.
bryansj 02-18-09, 11:49 AM You are being overly cautious. When you leave the game alone it will shut down the controller and then dim the screen.
mproper 02-18-09, 11:53 AM There's not many games without HUDs.
You should probably do a search on plasma burn-in (not to be confused with image retention). It's pretty much a non-issue unless you're leaving the image on the screen for (literally) tens of hours. Burn in is one of those things that don't really exist with most TVs made in the last 5 years (except in extreme cases of neglect and abuse), yet the stigma is still there and refuses to die and go away.
Depending on the TV, you might also have a screen saver or something you can set (I can't remember if the 360 does, but I think it times out and dims the screen and turns the controller off). Your TV might also do image shifting (which moves the image around slighly (imperceptible to the human eye) to also help.
The long story short, is I really wouldn't worry about, unless the TV is being left on for more than like 15-20 hours or something. Alternatively teach your 6 year old to turn it off after she's done.
joebloggs13 02-18-09, 12:05 PM When I am home it's not a problem, but I am gone a lot of the time on the road with work (typically 12-15 days a month away...in the airline business), and sometimes when the wife is upstairs etc.... I guess not all games are made like assassin's creed and dead space;) She wont be playing those ones!!!
formulanerd 02-18-09, 12:14 PM hud or no hud, if she sets the controller down, nearly all the images on screen are now static.
joebloggs13 02-18-09, 12:18 PM Yeah, I set the pixel shift to 4/4/1 for gaming when I go. Thanks for all the responses. I guess there are no games today without hud's. Not a big deal, just thought I would ask though.
sirjonsnow 02-18-09, 01:18 PM The only other one without a HUD that I can think of at the moment is Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, but I don't think you want her playing that either.

GOW2 only has a hud when you are actually doing something (like reloading, etc)...it disappears for the most part. And that game is entirely appropriate for a 6 year old girl.
A previous poster brought up a good point. Hud or no Hud, the screen is going to be (mostly) static as soon as she sets down the controller and walks away, so lack of a HUD won't make a lick of difference.

I hope you aren't serious. The game is rated M.

Yes, I forgot my sarcasm tags, but I figured it was obvious.
joebloggs13 02-22-09, 07:43 PM Thanks for the posts guys... I am off to the store to pick up a copy of GOW2 for my daughter.;):D:D:D Just kidding. Since I have set the pixel shift to 4/4/1 for gaming I hardly get any IR, and whatever there is fades very quickly. She has finished kungfu panda and nearly done lego indiana jones, so I am on the lookout for something new for a youngster. She also has viva pinata as well, but hasn't taken to that game yet. Cheers all. JoeB.

Look to XBLA.
Lots of kid-friendly games in there.

Lego Star Wars?
Ya know, slightly off topic, but i am surprised there isn't a "Lego - Lego" game where you just build things with blocks!

It's called Boom Blox (http://www.amazon.com/Boom-Blox-Nintendo-Wii/dp/B000YDIYFG/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1235402369&sr=8-1) and is for the Wii. You stack blocks, then throw things at them and knock them down. Supposedly it's a lot of fun (more than it sounds). I was thinking about getting it for my kid, since he's a Lego nut.
Speaking of Lego games though, has anything been announced about the next version? They are great/fun games to play through with my kid.
