I am in the same situation.
Picked up a an x-box hd dvd drive that was cheap. Lots of folks here on AVS (including this forum and the PC forum) refer to PowerDVD 7.3 as the solution.
I cannot find the software anywhere online for purchase so I stuck the drive on the shelf since my XA2 is working fine.
But I am sure someone can point us in the right direction.
Rigby Reardon 02-18-09, 06:12 PM There are two actively supported products that still support HD-DVD playback: Arcsoft Total Media Theater (http://www.arcsoft.com/public/software_title.asp?ProductID=3&dyContent=) and Corel WinDVD 9 (http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/us/en/Product/1189528458632#versionTabview=tab0&tabview=tab0). You also might find a boxed version of PowerDVD 7 Ultra somewhere, but it is no longer supported (Cyberlink unfortunately dropped HD-DVD support in PowerDVD 8).
Personally, I use TMT and it works fine for both HD-DVD and Blu-ray for me. But I've also heard good things about the latest build of WinDVD 9, and it has some nice picture enhancement features for regular DVDs.

Thanks Rigby.
Why did you chose TMT over WinDVD? And how often have you used it with HD DVDs? Any issues of note?
Rigby Reardon 02-18-09, 06:31 PM Why did you chose TMT over WinDVD? And how often have you used it with HD DVDs? Any issues of note?I chose TMT mostly because the WinDVD version that I tried back then wasn't really stable for HD-DVD and Blu-ray (that was when HD media support was just newly introduced by Corel). But I hear it has improved in the meantime. Corel has a money back guarantee, so I guess you could test it for yourself without risk.
I have used the HTPC for quite a few HD-DVDs and never encountered major problems with TMT. Even things like PiP and online content work fine. I had problems with several Blu-rays though, apparently due to BD-Java.
Davinleeds 02-18-09, 06:35 PM If you're using xp you need a udf driver.

Good info.
So given a choice of finding a new boxed Powerdvd version 7 for $15 or so vs. getting the new TMT or WinDVD for around $70...what would you do for infrequent HD DVD viewing on a PC with the x-box drive?

Not my experience, if you want XP to recognize the drive.

So even if Cyberlink don't release any more bug-fixes or updates of the AACS keys, it shouldn't matter to you. Just make sure that you get the Ultra version.
Rigby Reardon 02-18-09, 07:19 PM Not my experience, if you want XP to recognize the drive. The UDF driver has nothing to do with recognizing the drive. It is a generic file system driver for UDF 2.5, which is the file system used on both HD-DVD and Blu-ray.

I use Nero 8 Showtime with the HD addon and it works without a hitch with HD DVDs. The newer versions of Nero no longer support HD DVD.

If we have a xp ,xp pro,yes u need a udf2.5 driver inorder to identify the xbox360's hd-dvd payer
if you have vista u don't need udf 2.5 driver ,Its just plug and play
now for the playback software
u can use cyberpower dvd 7.3 and up
vlc player (might need some video and audiocodec drivers )
windows media player same as vlc player
windvd can also playback the hddvds
Tmt also can do it
I picked up the LG combo HD-DVD/BD drive and it came with PDVD7 BD edition. Alas that edition won't play HD-DVD's which seems strange. And I can't find a way to upgrade it to do that so I am not able to play my HD-DVD collection on my PC which is a slight annoyance.

Same boat, Google brought me to this thread. :(
I'm getting the trial version of the Corel software, will see how that does. 30 day trial at least means it's free to find out! :)
