View Full Version : Watchmen Blu-Ray release to have 3 separate cuts
http://www.collider.com/entertainment/news/article.asp/aid/10993/tcid/1
There will be the obvious Theatrical Cut, the 3hr 10min Director's Cut and and another cut with “Tales of the Black Freighter” that will be 3 hours 25 minutes. Details are on that link.
I would imagine the first release would have the Theatrical and Director's Cut, and then the deluxe would be released at a later date, but who knows? According to Zack Snyder what's comprised on the deluxe cut isn't quite the same as the Black Freighter/Under the Hood release in late March.
Tales of the Black Freighter is only 15 minutes? Or it's an edited down version of the standalone?
Edit: Seems Black Freighter is 22 minutes.
Tales of the Black Freighter is only 15 minutes? Or it's an edited down version of the standalone? He answered the question as far as what and how he intended on using it in the movie.
It's about 25mins on the individual release, Under the Hood is about 35.
eric.exe 02-18-09, 07:22 PM After negotiations between the studios, they agreed that Paramount would own 25% of the film and would distribute it outside North America.
So the Euro BD releases won't suck. Highly doubt Warner will do a good job on the US BD with 3+ hours runtime.
cnikirk 02-18-09, 07:37 PM Wow, Tales of the Black Freighter could be really cool. Does anyone know how long the theatrical cut is? I'm afraid 2 hours won't be sufficient to convey the whole shebang.

2 hours, 40 minutes. So the director's cut's a good thirty minutes longer. Cool.
Does anyone know how long the theatrical cut is?
From the article in the OP:
While the theatrical release of “Watchmen” is about 2 hours 36 minutes, Zack just told me the DVD/Blu-ray will have two versions to appease the fans that wanted more.
There will be a director’s cut on the DVD that will be 3 hours 10 minutes and another cut with “Tales of the Black Freighter” that will be 3 hours 25 minutes!
Sounds like we're getting all three cuts on the BD the first time out. Nice, if true. I have really high hopes for this film.

I have high hopes, but very low expectations. I couldn't make it more than halfway through 300 and I'm a fan of that book.

Black Freighter 720p trailer up.
Looks interesting. I needs me a corpse raft!
Looks interesting. I needs me a corpse raft!Yeah, Alan Moore wrote the Black Freighter comics based around the old EC Comics of the '50s. Now you know where Tales From the Crypt came from.;)
I'm REALLY interested in the Black Freighter footage. I hope this movie is incredible.

Same here. Dr. Manhattan sure looks cool in the trailer.
30XS955 User 02-19-09, 01:02 AM I'll bet that that one guy isn't vaporized at the end, you know that one guy, so that they can make a sequel later on if they want. I won't say his name because it would be spoilers. His death or survival might be one of the alternate cuts, kinda like in Halloween .
shadowrage 02-19-09, 02:26 AM I gots my fingers cross-ed for a box set with the feature film, animated film, and the comic. Plus some nifty trinkets.
I was worried the run time was going be at only two hours. The theatrical running time is about right. The DC cut is probably just right. Looks like Snyder knows what he's doing with this one.
Can't wait to see this movie, but then they went and put the trailer to a Muse song. Now I really can't wait.
I just hope Warner manages to get the resources in time so they can put a second BD with the movie for HD extras. They's gots issues wit dat.
FoxyMulder 02-19-09, 06:12 AM The distributors got this classified at the BBFC for an 18 certificate and a 161 minute running time.
That got pulled and then the site apparently talked to Paramount UK who say the film will remain an 18 certificate which means it must have some pretty graphic violence in it as usually i would expect films like this to get a lower certificate.

Wow. Authoritative running-time advice for an unseen movie. I don't think I'll be watching any films you edit.
C. Lawrence Sims 02-19-09, 09:07 AM Interesting review of the film...http://hollywood-elsewhere.com/2009/02/that_whooshing.php

Well Snyder said they weren't making a sequel, and the graphic novel is pretty dense. The runtime whould have to be 3+ hours.
I don't think shoehorning the flick in under 2 hours would do the graphic novel justice. Must see Wachmen.

One could time out a line-reading of the comic and come up with an idea of a rough running-time, but this has almost nothing to do with the realities of film adaptation, production and pacing. Unless you've read the script, I think it's totally foolish to expect any particular running-time to be more appropriate than another. And, even if you have read the script, you'd also need to sit down with the completed footage, the way the editor does, and figure out what works on the screen and what doesn't. Sometimes, as just one example, a single movement from an actor (something that couldn't be produced in the comics medium) can express something which makes an entire scene redundant. Comics is a pretty close medium to cinema, in the grand scheme of things, but they're still very different.
shadowrage 02-19-09, 11:00 AM Those are all valid points and I see what your saying. And I know how important editing is, I'm just saying the graphic novel is an epic and it looks like the film will be too. Which is a good thing in my book.
And your right that there's no way of knowing without seeing the entire film, which is part of why I can't wait for March.
In addition to the runtime I would assume that not trying for a PG-13 rating was a smart move too.:p /fingers crossed for the next Batman to be R(or at least have an unrated cut somewhere).
Bill C. 02-19-09, 11:41 AM So the movie comes out in two weeks. Which means the BD, unless it spectacularly implodes at the box office, should be along no earlier than...June, maybe July. I'm there pretty much for Tales of the Black Freighter, regardless of how the movie turns out.
Go to the original link I posted. It was updated again. Apparently the "Ultimate" 3hr 25min cut with some Black Freighter footage is on schedule right now for a Fall release. It appears to be a Blu-Ray exclusive release, NO DVD release. Whether it stays on schedule is another story...
Bill C. 02-19-09, 12:05 PM Thanks, DaveFi. So, ballparking it, probably mid-September earliest (six months out)...
luigionlsd 02-19-09, 01:59 PM Just to get this straight, we're looking at the day-and-date release as Theatrical + Director's Cut, and then a follow-up BD including Theatrical + DC + Black Freighter?
Just to get this straight, we're looking at the day-and-date release as Theatrical + Director's Cut, and then a follow-up BD including Theatrical + DC + Black Freighter? It's confusing, all I can gather for sure is that parts of the Black Freighter that ZS found worthy will be in BOTH the Director's and Ultimate Cut, and the Ultimate Cut will be offering even more footage he wanted to include in the movie (like the stuff involving Hollis Mason's death), and more exclusive Blu-Ray content.
At least that's the way it reads to me.

The way I understand it is that around comic con this year will be the first home video release. This will be a theatrical cut and a diretor's cut, it sounds like these will be seperate on DVD but both cuts should be on the blu ray via seemless branching. This version will not have any of the animated Black Freighter stuff on it. Then in the fall we will see the Ultimate cut which is the cut that will feature about 15mintues of Black Freighter footage as well as newstand footage to kind of fill everything in.
For one I am very happy that the different versions are being announced now. I hate when companies release a crap version and then double dip 6 months later just because. In this case, similar to the LOTR films, I don't mind because they are letting you know ahead of time. If I KNOW a double dip is coming I can decide whether I want to just wait and get the better version or just buy both. In this case I am thinking I will be buying both, as I think this movie is going to rock.
gmitran 02-20-09, 04:24 AM The trailer for Black Freighter shows it's animated. So is the additional footage animated too? If so, not that much better for me.
Bill C. 02-20-09, 07:22 AM I honestly don't know if anything else is or was supposed to be animated, but I doubt it. Unless Under The Hood is, which would be odd...but not necessarily surprising, since it's going to be on the same DVD (as per the text in the TotBF trailer).
The trailer for Black Freighter shows it's animated. So is the additional footage animated too? If so, not that much better for me.No, The Black Freighter is the only section of the movie to be animated because the director wanted to be true to the "comic within a comic" story.

preliminary data for the next edition of Watchmen Blu-ray in the USA. Although there is no announced release date, Warner edition for Zack Snyder's film in Blu-ray will be director's cut with three discs: one for the movie, disc two for extras and the third one digital copy.

Bill C. 05-06-09, 01:54 PM Assuming this thread (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-talk/554493-watchmen-directors-cut-july-21st.html) is accurate, we now have a release date for the Director's Cut BD: July 21.
joeblow 05-06-09, 04:22 PM I just got through watching all 5.5 hours of the animated video... it really does a good job at filling in holes and questions I was bugged by in the movie as a first time WM consumer. I'm looking forward to the director's cut, though I wish they edited out the horrific music selection for many scenes.
Swift Mojo Hand 05-06-09, 04:35 PM I am glad this thread is back to seeing action (I did not read it the first time). After hearing about all the hype surrounding the movie I decided to get the motion comic Blu-ray to see what the fuss was about. I was blown away after watching the five hour presentation over the course of two days. Went the next evening to view the new movie using the free ticket provided and was very happy with the live action movie as well.
Watchmen won me over, put me down for the Ultimate Edition Blu-ray.

Thank you.

Can't wait for Watchmen. Freakin' loved it.
I saw this film in the theater but the movie was not good as my expectation.I will buy the BD anyway.

Spot the guy in the closet.
The "HUGE blue penis" as you call it, is in the movie as much as it is in the graphic novel. Considering it's in about 4% of the movie, it certainly seems you have smurf penis on the mind a lot.

The light suit the actor wore for the CGI body rendering is actually so goofy looking, it's easily worse than seeing the animated penis. He's like a extra from the original Tron movie, or something. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/curiouslee/3442585012/) Sorta wish I hadn't seen that article on the special effects.
I really enjoyed this at the theater as it was so I'm wondering what the Director's Cut will be adding to the story, and will it enhance my viewing ala LOTR, or will I find the extra stuff too much? Guess I'll see in two months.
RDarrylR 05-17-09, 01:53 PM I held off going to the theatre but will buy this on Blu-ray.
Ugh over three hours for a comic book movie is too much. I say this a a comic book fan. I'll wait to see if the ultimate edition has the theatrical cut in HD.

You mean you say that as a comic book fan who obviously hasn't read The Watchmen.

raoul_duke 05-17-09, 06:24 PM I hated the movie and even I have to admit that it didn't feel as long as its running time would suggest. I was actually a bit taken back, when I realised that they were heading for Antarctica, I was like "Huh? Already?"
Filipinoyakuza 05-18-09, 04:25 PM This movie was such a DUD and disappointment.
So glad I didnt have to pay to see it since I saw a free advanced screening but even after watching the movie I felt like I wasted away 2 & half hours of my life watching this movie.
Guys, if you want to discuss the movie you can do that in the DVD and movie discussion forum.
As for the disc, I will be waiting for the "Deluxe" set that will be coming out around the holiday season.
StanDaMan 05-18-09, 06:38 PM I'd really like the uber deluxe version of this film on BD. I want all the bells and whistles!http://****************/smilies/img/2659/*************************
