Yes, it has been one year since D-Day for HDDVD.

http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/19/live-from-toshibas-hd-dvd-press-conference-in-tokyo/

Many of us stayed up late waiting for the hammer to finally fall. Fun times those were.:)

Here is a toast to good health, great memories, and looking forward to the future of HD.

In that year I think only one or two of the HD-DVD exclusives I own was rereleased on Blu-ray (the Matrix is one). I'd still be waiting for two dozen releases so my HD-DVD purchases don't bother me at all.

I average only one BD purchase a month. :( I sure miss the format war days.

Due to all the sales, and having started as a 'red', I have more HD DVD, but I still feel the sting of buying half of them at full price 18 months ago, and then seeing them for $5 now, oh well.

What have you guys done for redundant players/backup players?

Well I don't miss HD DVD at all because the format is still very much alive to me! I added two more HD DVD's to my collection only a couple of minutes ago to celebrate HD DVD's "death". :)

Yesterday I bought three HD DVDs for $18 including shipping. Good ones, too! Now that the format has been "officially" dead a year I'm pretty much done now but every so often another deal will turn up like yesterday.

Thanks for the good times, Toshiba!

Since that day, I have added over 110 HD DVDs to my collection. I need to find some more to commemorate the one year anniversary.

Ordered Dukes of Hazzard Unrated on HD DVD. I have yet to see that.

I remember waking up at night and checking the net via my iPod in bed to see Kannisto on highdefdigest's forum confirm a Japanese television broadcast that the HD DVD factories have stopped. It sucks but I still went on and bought Michael Clayton, The Brave One and No Reservations that month (I think they were new releases then).

I didn't have any regrets. To be honest, HD DVD led me to discover more about the codecs, VC-1, h264, etc. and I learnt in the end that all HD media is pretty much the same regardless if it's on disc, flash, HDD, streaming, etc. I learnt alot!

do you think 15 or 20 years from now thhat the HDDVD players will still work? , or be around. I think about this stuff sometimes!.....

I had a lot of fun and learned a lot from the format, such as the codecs and technical aspects of HD (I only became involved in HT forums as a result of being an HD DVD fan). I also got to develop my debating skills and a growing interest for foreign film (since I was importing a lot of HD DVDs). So even though HD DVD lost, I got a heck of a lot out of it and continue to do so because the format is far from dead in my home.

Regarding the news, it was a sad day, but by then it was a little anticlimatic as we all knew it was coming for a few days or even longer. The real big news was of course WB's announcement.

It wasn't a huge shock, Netflix and Best Buy had just pulled out too. After the WB announcement (more like a format murder), anyone with any sense knew it was over. At least HD DVD gave BD a run for its money; it lasted a lot longer than most expected. It had Best Buy, Sony, Disney, etc., all going against it, and still lasted nearly two years. It was the Dreamcast of video formats: highly underrated, Sony finally killed it, and took most of its ideas.

Without HD DVD we'd probably still have badly mastered MPEG-2 BDs with lossy compression, and maybe only half the titles released by now.

The sales have been great recently, but I still wish HD-DVD had won even though I have both players.

Since the conclusion of the format war I still haven't gone Blu. Sony's BDP-S550 almost drew me in and then I heard about LG's upcoming wireless player the 390 that I plan on snatching up on release date. Other than that, I have picked up a second HD DVD player the A35 and have added about 50 more discs to my collection. The firesale pricing has been great. While I have never done an exact count of my HD DVD collection I would estimate it at 150 movies.

My biggest complaint about the demise of the HD DVD format, besides the obvious, is that Bandai Visual did not complete the Freedom series. I have the first 3 movies and have little incentive to pick up 4-6 knowing that #7 will never be released.

Since the "end" of HD DVD, I've probably come close to doubling my collection of HD DVDs. I also bought another player.

I'm sad that HD DVD dropped out of the game when it did, but, then, that's just the way things go sometimes. Still, there were definitely some good times back then. And, in the end, I haven't missed out on much, as the last year really hasn't seen that many releases that I was dying to get my hands on. (With the format war on, I bought a lot of movies that I probably wouldn't have bothered to buy otherwise. Crazy, I know. And, now that HD DVDs have been so cheap, I've been doing it again!)

I have yet to go Blu, but I suspect that I will at some point (though I still think BD+ is a worthless pile of bit.)

Same here. I am disappointed that they didn't fulfill their promise to complete the series.

I did the same as you, Smack - doubling my collection and buying a backup player. I still use my XA1 as my main player. It does everything I need and does it well. I also have a PS3, but I don't find Bluray to be as good as HD DVD - just my opinion. I get sound skips with some Blu discs, and more lockups with Netflix rentals. I just wish the Alien movies had been redone in HD DVD before it died...

Ah, yes, that would have been nice. But, then, not really in the cards, as I think they are Fox releases . . . Oh well, it was fun while it lasted! :)

A year already?? RIP HD DVD....even dead its my preferred format, and I have both! It just runs some much easier on a PC than BD. Just need those Blu prices to start dropping faster!!

You know I wondered this too, so I ended up buying two additional 360 add ons for fifty bucks when they 5-free through rebate offer was still valid.

But you know, honestly in 15-20 years will we really want to watch our discs we have now...I know I rebought everything I ever cared about and once had on vhs when I was buying dvds...I did the same when I got into hddvd/bluray. I haven't used a vhs player in 5 years (last time I did it was for a certification program I was in that required a vhs player). My few remaining vhs tapes are in a bag stuck in a corner in a shed OUTSIDE.

We'll see how things end up in 10-15 years...but I doubt I'll be watching many of the media items I own now...

Not a chance in Hades I'll buy a Sony player! However, I have HD DVD players in depth and two Samsung BDP-1000s. I'm just sorry we never got to see Toshiba's 2008 product plans nor 51GB HD DVDs, but Warner deliberately cut HD DVD's throat -- it never stood a chance after that backstabbing move. I think there would have been some really good developments if it hadn't been for Warner -- way better than what Sony and BD have delivered!

PS. Sony destroyed the possibility of HD video disc by its 500M payoff to Warner. Why should we reward Sony by buying their players? If I were in the market, I'd go Panasonic!

They will be around, but they probably will just be an old collectors item on Ebay. Personally, I have an HD A30, and two HD DVD drives, so if I need a spare player, I am covered.

Hard to say. I still have two Laserdisc players that work fine. However one's an Elite CLD-99 and the other's a CLD-703. The 99 had an MSRP of $2,400 when new, the 703 was over $1,000. I'd say the build quality on those players is much higher than my HD-A3. (Funny how time flies. The PQ difference is pretty amazing, especially on poor transfers. A bad Laserdisc looks really bad!)

I still watch Laserdiscs. (Just finished The Hunt For Red October.)

I've purchased more HD DVD's this year than ever before, although I'm probably done at 32 discs. Based on the fact that I still watch LD I'll continue to watch HD DVD. I have three players, one still in the box as a backup.

I always preferred Blu-ray, only because of the specs (more disc space) but thought that HD DVD chose a better programming language (HDi vs. BD-J).

It's unfortunate the two camps couldn't have worked something out.

I miss the format war fights - it sure made for some excellent entertainment. It used to be (that whatever forum you were in) that you could tell a "Red" supporter from a "Blu" supporter just by their screen names the passion was so high.

Case in point: the HDTV Software Media Discussion forum. Notice how dead that place is now? That used to be the place to go watch the two sides battle it out.:D Remember people were getting so out of hand that the owner and mods of AVS shut it down for a few days - to my knowledge that had never happened before.

HD DVD was my preferred format, but I strongly support blu-ray these days. For those that haven't committed to blu-ray yet, give it a chance, there are some excellent deals on players right now (I happen to have the Pioneer 51FD and love it.) My XA2 is used solely for HD DVD movies these days as the Pioneer 51FD (after a number of firmware updates) has finally surpassed the XA2 in upscalling my DVD collection (IMHO). The only thing I have against BD these days (and I agree with another poster) is that BD-J is a b..tch what were they thinking. Even stalwart BD supporters from the beginning hate BD-J.

Yeah, i miss it too :D

Every day you turned on your computer and went to TheDigitalBits or AVSforum there was ALWAYS some new plan of attack from either side of the formats, and companys suddenly going exclusive or switching sides.
Always something exciting happening :)

Now a year later there is NOTHING fun to read about.
Oh there might ba an announcement of a mediocre movie titel, but thats it.
Boooooriiing......

2006-2008 The glorious years of High Def entertainment :)

I curse myself for selling my HD-DVD player and movies at the end of the war, WTF was I thinking :(
