I would like to buy something that can upscale to 1080i/p better than my TV's crappy scaling capabilities, but is it worth to purchase a DVDO EDGE over say one of Onyko TX series Receivers?
The DVDO Edge is going for over twice what I can get the Onyko for.

Would a Receiver have comparable upscaling processing as a DVDO Edge or are they in a completely different league?

Anyone here who researched both techs?

The only receivers that may be better than the stand alone edge are probably twice the cost of the edge and even then i doubt it. Its like using separates for Audio, Tuner, pre amp, amp separates usually are better than all in ones. Also you can upgrade at a later date to a better VP.

Roughly speaking, A/V receivers will upscale starting with 480p or 720p comparably to stand alone processors but on average today's do not upscale starting with 480i or 1080i as well.

Theoretically A/V receivers could upscale just as well as stand alones as they could well incorporate the same innards (Reon, HQV, Anchor Bay, etc.) that stand alones have. You'll just run into greater cost.

I asked this question about a month or two back, and decided that the only way I'll be satisfied with the answer is if I try it myself. However, my basement remodel is taking longer than I'd thought (typical), so neither my Edge nor my TX-SR876 have been opened up yet. My dedicated room should (hopefully) be done in about 2-3 months, at which point I'll A/B the VP capabilities of both, primarily with my DirecTV SD feed (my biggest complaint with my ae3000u), although I'll be running my PS3, Panasonic BD35k, Toshiba HD-XA2, and Dell XPS 1330 through them as well, so I'll be looking at all resolutions.

It may be longer than you're willing to wait for an answer, but I'll try to post some impressions here by early/mid-summer.
