View Full Version : Battlestar Galactica Complete Series
They probably farmed out the individual episode encode jobs to several different shops and gave the shops consistent quality targets in their statement of requirements, not codec selection mandates. If it is transparent-who cares anyways.
RDarrylR 08-06-09, 12:04 PM But can anyone with the set confirm that Season 4 changes codecs disc-by-disc? That's got to be a first.
My post above yours shows this. S4.5 Disc 1 (and Disc 3) is AVC and S4.5 Disc 2 is VC-1.

I got my replacement box today. The problems I had with what I had received were no Razor disc, no season one box and two season two boxes containing a season one disc and duplicates of the season two discs.
The solution was to send me a season one box containing season one and the Razor disc. This box has the five-disc accordion insert making it different from others but it's not like the packaging is worth much to begin with.
Anyone have any information about the internals of the packing of the UK box set? Would this be a potential region problem for US players?
jordy475 08-06-09, 05:36 PM Hi everyone,
I'm New here but I thought I'd chime in on my opinions on the set as I just received it yesterday....
First of all I like how the set looks, very commanding and elegant on the shelf, but it ends there.
My sentiments pretty much echo many others. It does not fit well on the shelf; the discs are, in my opinion, not protected well at all. I immediately placed them in 10, 2 disc blu-ray cases that I am working on custom art work for as I could not allow them to stay in the awful accordion packaging any longer
I'm only through the miniseries and part of "33" but I have to admit (even though it has been quite a while since I watched it) I feel that the improvement in image quality over the Miniseries on DVD is outstanding as I remembering it being quite nasty looking the last time I saw it.
One thing that I have to complain about that it doesn’t seem that any one has mentioned (I’ve tried to keep up with this thread) is the resistance webisodes (Which I watched briefly). I would be ok if these were just in SD, but they didn’t even make these anamorphic. With the price of the set (luckily my GF was nice enough to surprise me with it as a gift) I feel they should have released these in HD or at least anamorphic, but oh well at least these are included.
In the end I think it's a great set none the less, I'm going to head back and continue watching some more!!

Also, is Xylon doing a DVD comparison for this set?

Good to hear that you got your discs & packaging resolved. I was mildly paranoid that my set might arrive with something wrong.
I'm curious, where did you get your replacement parts? Was it through Universal, or was it through the retailer you bought the set from?
stumlad 08-07-09, 11:46 AM I have tried to grab some screens to compare to the HD DVD thread that Xylon created. For some reason, I can't seem to pull the same exact frames that he got. When I do, MPC seems to skip 2-3 frames forward and saves that. I've got to play with it more as i've never had a lot of luck with VC-1 files using Windows 7. Unfortunately out of the first 3...two of the shots show some DNR, but it's not heavy DNR and remember that this is the mini-series, not the actual episodes.
PWNKAKE 08-07-09, 12:00 PM I finished season the mini-series and season 1 last night. WOW, it's nice. I kinda wish i would of waited till now to watch it all because the presentation is outstanding compared to the OTA we all watched. Both AQ and PQ are top notch.
Anyone notice how they changed the picture of ellen tight from the third or forth episode to the preview before tigh me up tigh me down? I never realized it before but it's two different pictures that saul burns a hole through with his smoke.
RDarrylR 08-07-09, 12:08 PM Re: the spoiler - Yeah I noticed that too.
It's almost like a whole new show seeing it all in HD for the 1st time. I don't think I ever saw any of it in HD before.

I called Amazon and the replacement box was sent from someplace else with no receipt.
geekyglassesgirl 08-07-09, 12:34 PM After all the confusion some people have had with their discs, one of the first things I did after I got over the initial shock of getting this set (and handing over the plastic Cylon to my daughter to play with) was go through each season and make sure that I had all the proper discs in each case (thankfully I do!).
As I know it's going to be a while before I get my hands on different cases, I've been thinking of making an episode guide that can fit in the coffin-hole where the plastic cylon goes. I agree with others in this thread that the hole looks stupid once the cylon is taken out of it.
PWNKAKE 08-07-09, 04:41 PM Timeline wise, when should i watch "Razor"? Before the Pegasus episode? Or after it at the beginning of season 4 where it was in original air date? I only saw a bit of Razor and i didn't watch any episodes after the Pegasus saga played out (totally missed season 3 and 4.0. Picked it back up on season 4.5 after watching the "Webisode catch up" on Sci-fi.
Really enjoying getting all this straight watching the Blu!

Razor fits in right where it is in the packaging--between Seasons 3 and 4. Technically, it comprises the first few episodes of Season 4.
stumlad 08-07-09, 06:29 PM HD DVD shots were taken from Xylon's comparisons back in the HD DVD threads. This is the mini-series first half. I'll post more as I have more time, then I'll try to do some from the seasons.

sspears 08-07-09, 06:37 PM But can anyone with the set confirm that Season 4 changes codecs disc-by-disc? That's got to be a first.
At one point, during the production, two seasons were VC-1 and two were AVC. They wanted to redo the AVC in VC-1 because the AVC had more blocking in dark areas. Its interesting that within a season they are changing.
geekyglassesgirl 08-07-09, 06:47 PM Thanks for the screenies, Stumlad. I forget, do you have the HD-DVD version of that as well? The BD looks to be a bit more lush than the HD-DVD in the screenies, I'm wondering if it's noticeable in actual viewing (as I take screenshots with a grain of salt!).
RDarrylR 08-07-09, 06:57 PM I wonder how the season 2 set on HD-DVD compares to season 2 in the Blu-ray Complete Series set? I'm still finishing up season 1 myself from the Complete Series set.

Yeah I have the HD DVD version... just looking at the mini series they look pretty much identical in real world viewing. I fixed the coloring of the pics, and as you'll see there's very little difference... One HD DVD shot looks like it holds grain better but that doesnt seem to be common so it may just be a difference in the frame type.

Thanks Stacey. Does AVC normally block more in dark areas? Or was it due to something else they were trying to do with the disc, like compress so many hours or something like that?
I wonder how the season 2 set on HD-DVD compares to season 2 in the Blu-ray Complete Series set?
Haha. I was an avid HD-DVD adopter, but I enjoy these sly little stabs at our dear dead friend. I'd say the Blu-ray version of Season 2 is 100% better than the HD-DVD version. :D

It didn't make sense to me because:
i know that Pegasus is scuttled or destroyed and their captain is killed, which would imply (at least to me since i haven't seen all of season 3 or 4.0) that it fits somewhere in season 2?
But i'll take your word for it, and thanks for the info! :)

It's a flashback episode (that can also be watched as a standalone movie), but it sets some things up for what comes in Season 4.
As noted, "Razor" is a flashback episode that takes place before the end of Pegasus.
As a result, it is actually much better in my opinion when watched as it originally aired (between season 3 and 4) because you get to watch the original Pegasus storyline and then Razor fills in the gaps and gives background to re-interpret.
In my opinion, if you watch Razor before the end of the Pegasus stuff... it isn't as enjoyable at least not in the same way.
stumlad 08-08-09, 12:33 AM Here's 3 more... the HD DVD as mentioned earlier were taken from the BSG PIX thread in HD DVD forum. The differences, IMO, are pretty much insignificant. Got to find a couple of the regular episodes to compare against and maybe see if i can find out if this has the same interlacing issues that the HD DVD had.

Note that the above pic is also shown in the opening sequence where it says "The Cylons were created by Man" so it looks like this may be a CGI issue.
It appears the blu-ray has the same issue that the HD DVD had in the sequence below (S1 Ep 5). It's a different encode, so perhaps this was in whatever master they were using. For what it's worth, the blu-ray maintains the artifacting better :)

I guess. I'll tell myself it's to add a gritty feel to it.
They should use the same source for all 4 right? Then why do the HD home media versions have issues? Maybe we should email Universal about it, they could send a new disc...along with new cases.:o
whitestang06 08-08-09, 04:42 AM That's just plain annoying. I was hoping they'd fix that stuff. Maybe no issues will pop up in the rest of the seasons.

Mine also is exactly like RDarrylR's set as he described. FWIW, both of Season 4.0's discs are also VC-1, but Razor is AVC. I checked all the discs in the 4th season box last night out of curiosity.
eric.exe 08-08-09, 02:36 PM The DVD and HD broadcast didnt have this problem (check out hd dvd comparison thread). I have no idea what it is, but it's only a few frames, so I can put up with it :) There would be no way to tell because the DVD and HD broadcast are interlaced to begin with. For those screenshots the MPEG2 decoder's de-interlacing was probably on. If it was off, then every HD broadcast screenshot would have combing...
Firefly had the same thing, a few interlaced frames here and there. I'm guessing they were shot with 1080i cameras and not properly de-interlaced when making the masters.

Nice cover, but use it as Season 4 or 4.5. It gives away way too much info for Season 1 :)
I just picked up the Blu-Ray version of the Battestar Galactica series... When I fast forward or reverse and then press play, there is a very loud POP on my speakers. It appears similar to the previous DTS-HD Master "bomb" on Onkyo, Pioneer and Yamaha receivers several months back. I have had other DTS-HD Master BR discs and never had this problem before. Someone else suggested that too and I had also been thinking that myself. I used it cuz I found a super nice high resolution pic but since I read everyone elses suggestions, I've gone out to find new images. So far I have that one shown here to be used on Season 4, I found a good one for Season 2 and 3 but I'm still in the hunt for one for Season 1. I've got an ok image right now in place for Season 1, but I don't feel completely happy about it at the moment. Thanks for the feedback.

Great work, Darknight. Your example looks wonderful to me. Once you get all the season cover art squared away, I'm sure this will be much appreciated by us eager to get away from The Box.
Thanks much for all your efforts! :)

gorthocar 08-09-09, 10:28 PM The fraking stuck pixels are still there. In the episode Litmus (season 1, BD disc 3, first episode -- thanks for no episode guide Universal!) there are several scenes where there is debris on the lens that makes it look like I have some dead pixels on my TV. Extremely distracting. I seriously hoped they would have cleaned this up from the HD DVD set.
It is in the scenes where Sharon and Chief meet in secret near the water tanks for their relationship that they've been ordered to stop having. And also when Helo takes the hood off of another Sharon on Cylon occupied Caprica. And at least one other scene.
There was another episode on season 1 disc 2, but I didn't make a note of exactly where it happened. It would be almost forgivable the first time that they make the mistake, but when they faithfully reproduced it on BD, ugh, I have higher expectations, Universal.
Jedi2016 08-10-09, 12:15 AM Happens a couple times in S3, too. I forget the exact episode, but when the spot showed up on two different scenes, I actually paused the disc and took a close look at the screen to make sure it wasn't something in my television. Normally, the show has a very dark atmosphere where it wouldn't be noticed, but these were two stylized scenes, shot very brightly, and the little black spots stood out like a sore thumb.
The problem with "fixing" it is that it's part of the original digital master. Since the source video was all digital to begin with, they probably never did any kind of "cleanup" on it, just took it straight into post for effects and filtering and the like.
Besides, they made it pretty clear at the beginning of each season that they weren't going to clean it up.. "everything you see is intentional". Even though something like this is obviously not, I seriously doubt they'll ever go to any kind of trouble to fix it. Especially since this is supposed to be the end-all be-all complete series set. What are they going to do, double-dip a complete series? That'll be a first.
One thing I have found more annoying than I originally anticipated is the lack of an episode listing. Since I never watched most of the series to begin with, I didn't think I'd need one.. I have no favorite episodes to anticipate. But I didn't realize they had included both versions of the extended episodes. And in both cases I've come across so far, the broadcast version is the last one on the disc.. so I don't even know the extended episode even exists until I start watching the next disc. And then I usually skip the extended episode because I just finished watching it a few minutes before. They should have either A) Included only the extended episodes, B) Listed the broadcast episodes as being "edited/broadcast version", or C) just included a frakkin' episode listing.

Uni is really consistent in providing multiple versions of films on single discs. So it's odd that they just didn't branch the episodes for these discs.

It's happening with Farscape, though only because there's a new distributor.
cardaway 08-10-09, 10:25 AM I don't know if it would fall under the "double-dip" label, but I would be really surprised if there wasn't a new complete series box set that simply bundled the individual season box sets together with a bonus disc. I predict this will come out shortly after each individual season is released.
Saw the season 4.5 individual BD release this weekend. Anybody know if there is a regular plastic blu-ray case inside the outer box? The outer box makes it look like it might be a digipak, but it felt too "solid" to be a digipak.

With over 20 discs and over 4000 minutes with tons of grain(which i like) a few white mini-dots (I noticed them too), is not a big deal to me. Try dealing with Blu-ray discs thet don't play/road or skip. All BSG disc played excellently, so thank you Universal.

I feel quite confident that these boards will light up like Chistmas trees when "your item has shipped" emails start arriving in peoples' inboxes.
A few here have. A few got the DVD incorrectly shipped also.
My guess is there's quite a queue due to the price they had it up as.
Neo_Reloaded 08-10-09, 06:28 PM Here's what I've been working on for the last two nights just for the hell of it since it seems like Battlestar Galactica custom covers seem to be scarce right now. It's my first attempt at a custom cover ever with my limited photoshop skills. I'm willing to listen to any feedback, tips, font suggestions, etc but keep in mind my skills are limited :)
Very nice custom cover, though that scene on the front should be for the Season 4 box (it was actually a promo pic for that season, and the characters and their stances are related to the season 4 plotlines).

Thanks. Missed that one between all the complete series posts.
That packaging sucks as well. Guess I really will wait and hope for something better.
Filmmaker 08-10-09, 09:12 PM A few here have. A few got the DVD incorrectly shipped also.
My guess would be those were the people who were the very first to order, before DD went "out of stock" about ten minutes after the sale started...
gorthocar 08-10-09, 10:10 PM There is one minor thing that annoys me both with BSG and Heroes BDs. When they pack 5 episodes on a single disc, the episode selection menu shows a max of 4 at once. If you aren't watching all episodes in a single sitting, it could be easy to miss the 5th episode on a disc. I have to give Disney/BuenaVista/ABC kudos for the "Season Play" they have with their season sets. It would be nice if Universal had something similar to Season Play, but that could get messy with BSG's broadcast/extended episodes.

I got it ordered for just over $150 and it's still backordered, but I am about to cancel my order simply because of the wait (have lots of other movies/shows to watch anyway) and because of the poor packaging/incorrect discs.
stumlad 08-11-09, 01:17 AM I just picked up the Blu-Ray version of the Battestar Galactica series... Anyone else experiencing this issue?
My equipment:
Pioneer BDP05FD Elite player
Onkyo TX-NR906 receiver
I have an Onkyo 705 and PS3, but no pop when I FF/rewind or skip chapters. Tried it on Mini Series, Season Ep 1 and Ep 3, Razor and a couple eps on season 4. Are you decoding the DTS-HD MA on your Onkyo or is your Pioneer decoding? If it's your Onkyo, you may want try and let the pioneer decode.
Side Note: I checked and it seems Razor is AVC, but season 4.0 disc 1, and season 4.5 disc 2 are VC-1. I didnt try every disc, but seems only Razor is AVC.
Incindium 08-11-09, 11:09 AM I'm still content to wait for now on Deep Discount at the $152 price. However I just checked and the UK version would come to $170 shipped from amazon.co.uk. So if it stays backordered for a few more weeks I might as well just get the UK( Sept 21st release date) with the better packaging. Speaking of has anyone have pictures of the internals of the UK packaging?
Neo_Reloaded 08-11-09, 11:15 AM I think I've encountered a bug, while playing the discs in the PS3 at least.
If you fast-forward with U-Control applications on (not sure if it matters which, I had both the Oracle and Battlestar Bytes on), you can hit points that cause playback to crash. The screen goes black, and my only option is to hit the Stop button and restart the disc. I can fast-forward through those scenes fine with U-Control disabled, and watch them at normal speed with U-Control both on and off, so I don't think it's a disc defect - just a quirk with the U-Control software. I've only watched Season 3, Disc 1 so far, but I will be checking this on other discs as I get to them.

Darknight 08-12-09, 05:07 AM Welp here's my latest on the BSG replacement covers. I'm still a bit torn on which image to use for Season 1 so I've posted 3 different ones. I've got a preferred favorite I think but I'm curious what others feel like.
I'm a bit torn on the Season One, Two, Three, Four labels as I had to recreate them and couldn't find the right text but not sure how much better I can do without knowing the real text. I still think I need to tweak some of the positioning of the text on the Bonus Features listing, and I haven't done a good look over for typos either, but I thought I'd give everyone a glimpse of what is pretty close to being done I think. I also plan to have a variation on Season 4 which mentions Razor for those who want to go that route. Personally, I plan on doing a seperate case/cover for Razor for my set.
Anyway, here they are and let me know what ya guys think.

Darknight -
All I can say is WOW!!! Looking great.
For Season 1, I'd say either Variant A or C. Six's glowing eyes were a key part of the miniseries & cover art then. I'm really torn between the 2, but maybe very slightly leaning to C. Either one would be great. I like both!
To complicate you life, you could also use Variant B for Season 3. Since Tigh is a key player with the insurrection episodes, one could make a case for Variant B since it includes him. But the cylon centurions led by Gaius also fits :) See what others think. Either one is fine.
But for S1, IMO, Six should definitely be the center of attention ;)

Nice covers! I like c for season 1 myself.
Will these fit into the 6 disc cases we got ordered? (Is the middle spine part wide enough)
Looking good.
geekyglassesgirl 08-12-09, 10:10 AM Chiming in to agree that I like "C" for Season 1! Great work!
cardaway 08-12-09, 10:15 AM I prefer Season 1 "C" as well, but don't liek the one for Season 2 at all. Isn't there a better cast pic than that?
Dave Vaughn 08-12-09, 12:04 PM Great work...I agree with "C."
Even before I scrolled down and saw everyone jumping on the "C" bandwagon, I was sold. "C" it is for me! I really like the profiles.
PWNKAKE 08-12-09, 12:40 PM I like them all ,but will use "C".
Season two's cover seems to be a bit out of place... the other three look somewhat stylized, but season 2 just looks like a cast photo.
Great work though, definately got some mad skittles there. :)
Drandonuts 08-12-09, 12:46 PM Yeah, they look great.
Where can I download high-res versions?
Darknight 08-12-09, 01:11 PM Thanks for the kind words everyone. Sounds like Variant C is the preferred version for Season 1, so I'll make sure at least that one is available. I can also make multiple versions available if needed for those who want something specific.

I was designing them for the 6 disc cases but currently these do not fit them and were made on a standard case template. As soon as I find the right template or can figure out how much to adjust the spine to fit, I'll make that proper adjustment. It's one of the reasons they aren't out now as I wanted to test them to fit that style of casing. I have tested it in a single case and it looks great. So long story short, they will fit them when I'm done with them.

Filmmaker 08-12-09, 03:29 PM In the synopsis box for Season Three, the word "challenges" is misspelled. In the synopsis box for Season Four, the term "they" is constantly used, starting with the third sentence, without any clarification of who "they" is. The first sentence presents "they" as the humans, but the Cylons are then introduced in sentence two, making it necessary to specify we're back to talking about the humans in sentence three. Cool, this is the type of stuff I need since I haven't had the chance to proofread them and there's no spellcheck in photoshop. (Although I guess I could have typed them out in word first and the cut and pasted, but hindsight is 20/20 :D).
95% of the text is taken right from the covers but there are some areas where I slightly altered and I had a feeling Season 4 wasn't right but had not gone back to give it a once over since I merged the original Season 4 from the complete set with some text on Season 4.5 from the seperate release so that's probably why it came out that way. The original Season 4 text is a bit short and I didn't like it. Thanks for the feedback and I'll fix it up a bit.
I also plan on posting another Season 1 cover revision with a change I just made to see what you guys think.
Darknight 08-12-09, 03:49 PM Here's the latest. Since it will apply to all of them there's no need to post all four again. Minor changes, but I believe this is getting close to final with the exception of getting the spine dimension correct for larger cases. I have printed out one for a single case and surprised at how good it looks.
Changes to this version are:
- Correct and better quality UPC code (the original was from Season 4.5 and I used a program to generate the barcode this time in high resolution rather than using a scan)
- Added "NOT RATED" to the bottom back
- Added Universal and Battlestar urls to the bottom back
- Added runtime to the bottom back
- Moved down the copyright info to accomodate new info

Anyone got any other suggestions on how to make this look closer to a retail cover? I still need to add the product ID# to the spine but will do that when I get the proper dimension spine going.

Some of these would be perfect for BSG.

The set isn't out in the UK until September, so I don't know what all the frustration is about. Sure, sometimes people get things early but it's certainly not something to count on. You'll get all the pictures you need once the set is actually released.

agreed. Jeez, it's only a month
Phil Tomaskovic 08-14-09, 03:31 PM agreed. Jeez, it's only a month I think because some people have the US version backordered from DeepDiscount and are trying to decide whether to cancel it before it ships and go with the UK version.
pclausen 08-14-09, 03:58 PM When do you think Netflix is going to carry these?
Been wondering the same thing. They are normally pretty good about getting Blu-ray series right away, like Dexter S3 is already in their system and it gets released next week. Not sure why they don't have Battlestar yet...

I don't know if this has been answered yet, but is the UK version region free and are the special features playable in US players? Some imports may be region free but have special features in SD PAL.

whotony 08-15-09, 01:48 AM I would like for netflix to have season 1 on Blu.
Nuts, I missed the group buy. :( Those slim cases, though...tempting
I would like to get hold of some slim cases, but the retailer doesn't support CC payments for international customers plus adds a high handling fee.
I'm in Australia and can therefore access PCX multi-disc cases (which has the same issue for USA residents wanting to buy from PCX as I do for USA slim cases).
Perhaps I can organise an exchange of PCX cases with someone in the USA who can get me slim cases. Money need not change hands if we can get equivalent exchange value, but if it is necessary, I have a PayPal account (although I'm not sure how to use it for anything apart from ebay purchases).
The only problem is that postage from Australia is hellishly expensive to the USA, which might make it uneconomic.
Harlock415 08-15-09, 03:16 AM Interesting enough I've ordered stuff from Australia, and the postage always seemed within reason. these were R4 DVDs from Australia. I have Paypal.
Interesting enough I've ordered stuff from Australia, and the postage always seemed within reason. these were R4 DVDs from Australia. I have Paypal.
I don't want to hijack this thread, so am happy to take the discussion elsewhere.
For single DVD titles that can fit in a large letter sized envelope, postage is fairly reasonable: a prepaid airmail envelope up to 125g and 20mm thickness is AUD$4.60; up to 250g is AUD$7.10.
However when sending more items as parcels, it's more expensive: a small parcel up to 500g is AUD$15.30 to USA (plus cost of bag or box).
So, sending 4 of those 6-disc Bluray cases would be $15.30+ if sent together as a parcel or $14.20 if sent separately as 2 letters.
Those cases are AUD$5 each from PCX in small quantities, plus whatever their postage costs within Australia.
Probably the group buy would be cheaper if it can be organised again.

On the second line of synopsis text, should the "b" in "battlestar Pegasus" be capitalized?
^^
good find
Other than that, the cover looks like a keeper :)
On the second line of synopsis text, should the "b" in "battlestar Pegasus" be capitalized?
Actually, maybe not. they arent talking about the name of the show but the name of a battlestar. the B on the Battlestar Galactica sentence maybe should be lower case. (Never mind, that sentence is talking about the shows' name.)
Where is the grammar police when you need them...
Darknight 08-15-09, 12:52 PM On the second line of synopsis text, should the "b" in "battlestar Pegasus" be capitalized?
I thought so too but that's how it was on the DVD cover. It seemed odd to me as well but I kept it cuz I figure they wrote the text and had it checked. If anyone finds that it should be changed to be correct, I'll gladly change it. Thanks for proofreading guys. It definitely helps me out a lot. I may release the final covers in full high resolution this weekend if I can find the proper spine width and a place to host. Thanks again guys and let me know if you find any other errors or have some suggestions for changes.

jordy475 08-15-09, 06:58 PM Hi everyone,
Not sure if everyone in this thread looks at the custom cover thread but I made some custom covers for the 11mm, 2 Disc Blu ray cases.
Here are some examples:

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn264/winansad/833b22f9.jpg
Please note it only looks like the links I provided in the custom cover thread work on Firefox and safari browsers, I will switch to a new site when I get a chance but the site I chose allowed for the full 4-5MB file to be shared without paying for the site.
Enjoy and I am open for comments as I can still change the cover.
Thanks, Jordy
Dave Vaughn 08-15-09, 08:19 PM Jordy...good job.
Harlock415 08-15-09, 08:26 PM Those are very nice!Plus they have the episode listings on them :D
Darknight 08-16-09, 07:07 AM I'm finally done! I've got them divided into four packs:
- Slim
- Slim No UPC
- Wide
- Wide No UPC
Slim is the 12 mm standard Blu Ray case and Wide is the 14 mm 6 disc case that was purchased in the group buy. A good suggestion was that the UPC wasn't needed so I made a variant where at the top there are four pictures instead of three pictures plus UPC for those who don't want the UPC code on their covers. Finally, every set includes the Razor single disc cover and two Season 4 covers, one which mentions Razor and one that doesn't so that you can choose which path you'd like to go.
Now that all this is done, I just need to know if anyone can recommend how I can distribute this? I've got them right now as high quality JPGs, but let me know if I should save them out as another format. I currently have them packed in a RAR too. Please let me know what the best format and a place where I can upload these so that I can get them out to you guys. Once I've got that info, I'll post the links to the d/l and also post one last time the covers to the forum in their final form.
Thanks everyone.

All your covers are works of ART, keep up the great work!!
Darknight 08-16-09, 06:45 PM Ok, here is the final set of covers unless someone finds something that needs to be fixed. They are broken down into four sets depending on if you get the 12mm cases which I believe go up to 3 disc cases, or if you get the 14mm 6 disc cases that were bought in the group buy. The 14mm case is slimmer than the Blade Runner/Lost style disc cases so a new set will have to be made to accomodate the wider spine if that is needed. A few minor changes have been made since I last posted any images which include product ID #, some adjustment on where some things are, and changed text for Season 4.
Each set contains all the Seasons, BSG Razor, and the Season 4 variant covers that either mention Razor or doesn't mention it depending on how you want to create your sets. For those who don't want UPCs on their covers, I have made both 12mm and 14mm cases where the UPC is removed and replaced with another scene image.
Please let me know if anything doesn't work or needs to be changed. Hopefully this is the last time I need to spam the thread with images. I have not tested the 14mm covers with an actual case yet since mine haven't arrived but I did apply an extra 2mm to the spine in Photoshop. I have all covers in PSD format and can easily port them to any other image format that may be needed. Covers are at 3184 x 1800 resolution for the 12mm and 3208 x 1800 resolution for the 14mm cases.
Here's the download with the previews below of what they all look like. Each set is a RAR that contains the six covers that apply to which set you get.

Damn, I knew I was going to miss something. It happened when I was cleaning up the PSDs and removing layers that were no longer being used. One layer got reoroganized to a wrong priority level and that got covered up. I'm fixing it now and will fix the stuff in the post in a few min once I got it all uploaded. Thanks for spotting that.

These are frakkin' awesome! Thanks for putting them together. Can't wait for my 6-disc cases now.
shadowrage 08-17-09, 01:52 AM Ok so I'm just going to pass on the set I ordered from DD for $150 and pony of the extra $20 for the UK set it's identical to the US set, region free, and has an episode guide.:D

Unfortunately, we don't received finished copies to review from - in this case it was just a pile of 20 pre-release Blu-ray checkdiscs in CD-style casings bound together with elastic bands - so I hadn't actually seen the booklet pictured in the shots of the packaging at the time of writing.
However, I have since contacted Universal Pictures on your behalf and received an email in response stating that both the DVD and Blu-ray boxsets include a 36-page booklet containing 'episode & bonus guide, glossary of terms, and character bios'. I hope this helps.
darkedgex 08-17-09, 02:14 AM Damn, I knew I was going to miss something. It happened when I was cleaning up the PSDs and removing layers that were no longer being used.
Are the PSDs inside the RAR files? Will you make the PSDs available?
Darknight 08-17-09, 02:32 AM Are the PSDs inside the RAR files? Will you make the PSDs available?
No, only the images and a small text file with a bit of info is inside the RARs. From what I can tell, people typically don't release PSDs for covers plus the PSDs are pretty big. Between 35 to 45 megs per, and almost a total of 350 megs for all of them. Not too easy to distribute I would imagine compared to just the images which only about 9 megs per cover set. Is there a reason you need the PSDs? Something you want changed?

The PSDs should compress fairly well (you might try 7zip), plus I was thinking of using them as a starting point to having them professionally printed (and it'd be nice to have the assets all together in one file so it can be worked with in Adobe Illustrator).
Speaking of distribution, it's times like this that I wish there were a torrent site for exchanging custom covers. That would easily address the issue of space/bandwidth. =)
Darknight, have you posted them somewhere for download yet? :)
Ghostface1701 08-17-09, 07:55 AM You'll hate me, but I've found another error. On the Season 4 back cover, under Extended Episodes, an episode is incorrectly called "Island in a Stream of Stars". It's actually Islanded...
Good work with the covers though :)
Darknight 08-17-09, 03:47 PM Darknight, have you posted them somewhere for download yet? :)

Awesome covers darknight!
Ok dumb question time: How do we get the images printed so they are the exact proper size? For example if I print them out at work on a color printer, are they just automatically the proper dimensions? Do I have to use adobe photoshop or something to do the printing? And what exactly are the typical dimensions of a bluray insert?

They should just print out at the proper size; they're high resolution but the document print size should be correct when it prints out. It's something like 10.5" by 6" or something like that. I can just print and then trim the blank white sides and it fits just fine. That's for the 12mm versions at least. I haven't been able to test the 14mm covers since my cases haven't arrived yet.

Can I safely say, "Depends on your printer?"
Darknight 08-17-09, 07:16 PM Thanks. Are the 14mm for the 6 disc cases?
Ya, the 14mm is for the 6 disc cases that were bought in the group buy not that long ago.
Just now downloaded the 14mm no-upc set and it still reads "Island" Did you edit your post to show the new URL's for downloading?
I just double checked, they all should be updated including the links. Hmm, not sure why you see Island instead of Islanded. Is that on both the Razor and non-Razor Season 4 covers? Did you make sure to reload the page so the updated post is showing?
Not sure what else to suggest, but let me know if you still haven problems and I can try to dig into it further or even reupload again.
What's the best paper to use? Photo paper? Or some kind of "made for images" paper?
This I'm not completely sure of. I've seen some people suggest semi-gloss photo paper but not sure if that's the best. I noticed when I used that for my testing purposes, while it looks and fits great, I noticed the ink is, hmm how do I put it, more sticky? like it seems to stick to the clear plastic more on the cases. I'm not sure if people have tips to remedy this or not. I'd be interested in hearing what more people use too.

from homecinemachoice.comSavings is even less from DD for me since I have to pay IL tax.
Does anyone understand how VAT works? I see the price goes from £114.88 to £99.90 when I checkout. But I was going to get the UK Woodstock BR and its price does not change at all. Anyone know why that is?
Just saw... I guess for some reason Woodstock is sold through Indigostarfish.com which does not collect VAT.
Darknight 08-18-09, 07:15 AM No promises on this, but this is something I threw together tonight. In all likelyhood I won't be creating covers for this as that just jumps it from working on 5 covers to working on 19. Granted the core is done, but creating all new logos for each cover and figuring out the text to list under episodes might be too much for me to work on now. I could just make Disc 1-5s for all of them, but I'm not sure I could be completely pleased with all of them having the same back at that point and no episode listing. Anyway, here's a teaser that likely won't ever end up coming to light.

I use HP C6817A Brochure and Flyer paper for my covers, and it works perfectly. I've been using it for years, and it works fine with printers other than HP. You can buy this at Staples or Office Depot.

Yes, just tried the link for 14mm with UPC & it's expired :(
The 14mm without UPC still has some life.
New links without restricted number of downloads would be great!

Here's the download with the previews below of what they all look like. Each set is a RAR that contains the six covers that apply to which set you get.

I'm having the same problem with the 14 mm Slim 6 Disc Case Set link. Refreshing the page doesn't work for me.
No UPC covers - any size - no problems - files can be downloaded
With UPC covers - any size - get this message on page:
"Error
This file is neither allocated to a Premium Account, or a Collector's Account, and can therefore only be downloaded 10 times. This limit is reached."
Refreshing pages does not solve problem. Apparently, it's the number of times the files can be downloaded at Darknight's level, not a page glitch.

nope. i'm guessing they didn't run the numbers on their 25% off discount and are going to lose money on the set so they're holding off re-ordering hoping people will cancel. bestbuy, amazon, buy.com all have it in stock.
i had no plans on watching it anytime soon, i just jumped because it was such a good deal, so i'm fine waiting. though it would be nice to have it by the time 'the plan' is released. i'd like to watch the mini series and 'the plan' back-to-back.

Wow, I must have gotten super lucky since I got my set from DD pretty quickly from them and I had waited to order so I could use the 25% coupon. Even got in on the reduced price to get it down to $150 for the few hours it was valid.

I've switched from Rapidshare to another host. If you're clicking on people quoting the links, that will of course be the wrong links and it must be done from the original post.
They are images, but they're sets of images packed into RARs depending on what config people want. I think Photobucket has a resolution limit if I recall, but I also know they have a pretty quick bandwidth limit before the image won't show up anymore so I would think Photobucket is out of the question. Most photo hosting sites don't like you put up 3k x 2k res images and make them accessible at full resolution.
Everything should be working now, so just hit up the original post.
Thanks Darknight for all your work on this! :D

Yeah.. the lack of the booklet is pretty crappy. I've just finished season 3 and at least the video / audio is great. And honestly, i'll take great audio/video over books, toys, and packaging any day.
Still frustrating though.

I haven't started watching my copy yet (still finishing off a couple other series before rewatching BSG), but the booklet thing is pretty annoying to me. The major reason is the extended cut episodes that appear on a different disc than the TV edit. Between the two, I will definitely be watching the longer cuts, but I won't know when an extended cut will be available on the following disc unless I make notes beforehand.
I ended up just finding a disc-by-disc listing of content and keeping a copy handy.

I printed these today on some paper designed for color printing, and they look great. I did have to have to go into advanced printer settings and send the graphics as Rastor, however. When I sent the job to the printer the first time, the graphics were sent as Vector and it produced what I can only call 'stuttering' in the image. Changing to Rastor fixed it and they printed like a champ!
So, any chance you'll want to tackle an episode guide, next? :o
Darknight 08-19-09, 04:14 PM How many people download these things that 25GB per month is not enough?
I've been on other forums where photobucket is forbidden to be used at the risk of being banned just for hosting images. Why? Because within a couple days those images turn to the photobucket bandwidth limit reached and those are much smaller images. That's why I'm avoiding the usage of photobucket. They're hosted now anyway so what's the big deal where it's at as long as it's up and working?

Glad it worked out for ya. Heh not so sure about the episode stuff. I'm going to be on vacation in a couple weeks so I may not have time till I get back. The Digital Bits created inserts though that are printable. I haven't looked them over yet but I was planning on just using something like that.

I've seen a link to one Web site that had multi-disc Blu ray cases, but it looked very much like a commercial dealer that might not deal with the general public.
I have a broken 3-disc Blu ray that I'd like to replace myself + it wouldn't hurt to have some spares or ones for sets like this + I still want to do something with my Planet of the Apes 5-movie too-big-for-the-shelf set.

Have a look around Page 29 of this thread for 6-disc cases.
They are available from an Australian retailer, but are difficult to access internationally because CC is not accepted.
If I had enough requests (10 or so), I might be able to post 4 of the 6-disc cases to USA recipients for about US$25 a time, with PayPal payment, but I'll have to further investigate practicality and this does seem a little expensive.

It's more of an e-booklet rough draft -- two images per 8x10 page, per the pdf layout -- in much reduced dpi (the raw file was over 300mb). In order to print it as a physical document, one would have to rearrange all the pages into the following order:
(back, front) 32-1, 2-31 // 30-3, 4-29 // 28-5, 6-27 // 28-7, 8-25 // 24-9, 10-23 // 22-11, 12-21 // 20-13, 14-19 // 18-15, 16- 17.

Darknight 08-21-09, 05:27 AM I noticed your BSG logo isn't high res. I have a super high res logo if you want to replace it.

Harlock415, I don't know how to print this exactly, but it's in e-booklet form. It's not in printing order because this isn't the final version. In order to print it as a physical book, one would have to rearrange all the pages into the following order:
(back, front) 32-1, 2-31 // 30-3, 4-29 // 28-5, 6-27 // 28-7, 8-25 // 24-9, 10-23 // 22-11, 12-21 // 20-13, 14-19 // 18-15, 16- 17

And Adobe Acrobat Reader will do that for you automagically if you have a printer that supports duplex (double-sided) printing - just select the "Booklet" Duplex style, and print all pages (1-32) as though you were printing normally (i.e. one page per sheet) - it re-orders and re-sizes correctly. Harlock415 08-21-09, 02:48 PM And Adobe Acrobat Reader will do that for you automagically if you have a printer that supports duplex (double-sided) printing - just select the "Booklet" Duplex style, and print all pages (1-32) as though you were printing normally (i.e. one page per sheet) - it re-orders and re-sizes correctly. At least it worked for me with the printer I have access to at work.

I wonder how much Kinkos or Staples would charge for this kind of printing, just one or two?

How do I print these disc inserts? Are these meant for people who are putting each disc in a single-disc slim pack? I'd doing the 6 disc case thing and would love a version like these that covers each season all on one sheet somehow.

Tspeer, it's not meant to fit into any standard Blu Ray case (yet), although I suppose one could size it down to do so. Again, this is still a draft, albeit mostly complete.
Anyway, here's Verison 3.0 (http://www.mediafire.com/file/bml0e2kugyt/BSG FLYER print vr 3.0.pdf) of the flyer, in printing layout order, text corrected with a new head logo (thanks Darknight!)

For the new version of the booklet you linked, to print correctly do the following (this is a bit theoretical, since I'm not able to try it right now):
print pages 2-33 (first page is the notes)
select 2 pages per sheet printing under "page Scaling" (page order: Horizontal)
Set duplex printing to open to the top ("top" of a portrait page, because we're printing landscape)
And hit "Print".
Mebbe it works, mebbe it doesn't - just a suggestion.
My suggestions from above were based on the order in the original PDF you posted, which were the page-by-page order of the booklet, since Acrobat Reader will figure out the layout, etc. Since the order in the PDF is now configured as the intended sheets, you can't use the "booklet" duplex setting - it will re-order them all wrong.
AFAIK,

Gator5000e 08-23-09, 01:29 PM I've seen a link to one Web site that had multi-disc Blu ray cases, but it looked very much like a commercial dealer that might not deal with the general public.
I have a broken 3-disc Blu ray that I'd like to replace myself + it wouldn't hurt to have some spares or ones for sets like this + I still want to do something with my Planet of the Apes 5-movie too-big-for-the-shelf set.
Would thses work?

Thanks.. that might work for my DVD sets, if I decide to move them to smaller containers and save shelf space... but for my Blu rays, I want to get the Blu ray sized cases for multi-disc.
Moving slightly off-topic for a moment, but is anyone else still in back order hell with DDD with regards to this set? The wife is getting a little antsy about where her high-def BSG is...

This flyer looks great!
However from looking at the first page with the notes, which list the proper page ordering, the images are not arranged in that order. Page 2 of the PDF is the last page 32, page 3 = 1, Page 4 = 2 (so far so good), but page 5 is ?? It's talking about disc 3, but should be the 31st page. (iano it seems out of place) (I think what threw me was pages 30 and 31 are both in reference to season 4.5 disc 3, and the way it was worded on those 2 pages differed slightly from all the prior pages.)
It would be easier to follow the page numbering notes if the first page of directions was actually moved to the last page in the PDF, and the preview you posted earlier with each page and its pager number went all the way to the last page.
Of course it could just be that all the weird page ordering for laying them together and folding in the middle has me mixed up... ^^- this, lol.
EDIT: Ok I was imagining it! This is sweet. Took 2 tries but I got it printed out ok. First time I set it to 2 pages per sheet in both Acrobat reader 9 and in the printer setup, which resulted in 4 pages per side.
Second try I used Acrobat readers settings only for the 2 page per sheet option:
Pages 2-33
Page Scaling: Multiple pages per sheet
Pages per sheet: Custom 2 by 1
Page order: Vertical.
In the properties of the printer:
Landscape
1 page per sheet
Duplex, Open to Left (vs Off or Open to top. Depending on your printer it might be called "Flip on short edge")
Now, to figure out how to bend each page in the middle and then staple them in the middle somehow.
Moving slightly off-topic for a moment, but is anyone else still in back order hell with DDD with regards to this set? The wife is getting a little antsy about where her high-def BSG is...

It honestly wasn't meant as a puzzle, I didn't know how exactly to print it myself. That's a good point about putting the instructions at the back, that page was never intended as part of the numbering system.
As you no doubt discovered, the pages do indeed line up -- I have a physical rough draft mock up with each of the pages numbered so that I could see how every page would *actually* be ordered. And yes, D3 4.5 is meant to be a two page spread (I added in some filler pages in order to make this fit in a real world layout, and this was a result. Besides, I think it looks cooler that way, too). If you don't mind, I'll be including those printing instructions with future copies.

Thanks for posting that. Definitely going for the UK/AU box. It's not exactly classy and I don't really like tins, but it seems like it's a lot more practical, particularly with the booklet.
I guess one could also wait for the individual seasons, but it'll probably be more expensive.

faust1103 08-25-09, 12:32 PM I would like to get hold of some slim cases, but the retailer doesn't support CC payments for international customers plus adds a high handling fee.

Got my notice on 8/21... got my package today. Everything was in pristine condition, that is until I tried to take some discs out!
Ok, now I fully understand the griping... This is some crap packaging. I partially tore my season 1 "accordion" trying to open it. It will be hard to "top" this packaging in my mind.
Strangely, I find the toy to be better than I thought... even though it reminds me of an IG-88 Star Wars figure I had as a kid... and I won't play with it now :)
I did find it weird how they did the discs though... Season 1, Season 2, Season 3, then we get Razor, Season 4.0, Season 4.5
Curious they did not do Season 2.0 and 2.5 since they went that route... nor did they set aside a "Mini-series" disc before Season 1.
It's all there, though, so I'm happy about that!

Well, my Cylon is standing right next to the iddy biddy Robbie the Robot that came with the Forbidden Planet HD DVD special edition.
That aside....I've been slowly working my way through Season 1 and am loving especially the audio. I only saw the SD version on SyFy before, so this is a real treat seeing the HD PQ for the first time.
What I have found interesting is in re-watching the series from the very beginning is how some people have complained there was "too much God" in the finale.
Good grief, in just the first half hour, head Six is telling Baltar he must serve the one true God and follow His will and when Shelly shows up, Baltar is shown praying to accept and follow divine will to save his butt.

I noticed that the booklet is just a little too big to slot in behind one of the season boxes (if you are using the original packaging). I'm going to reprint tomorrow with a 5% reduction or so and see if I can get it sized to match the season boxes.

I didn't get the "deluxe" version of Forbidden planet, and admittedly now find myself wishing that I had so I could have a companion toy.

I'm trying to remember... I know the mini I watched in SD, but also saw partially in HD when NBC re-aired it the following year at some point. Season 1 and Season 2 I'm sure I originally watched all SD. I'm pretty sure Season 3 as well... If my memory is serving me correctly, I didn't get SciFiHD until just after Razor had aired.
So, aside from catching a few repeats in HD... this will be all new in HD glory for me, and I am looking forward to getting started + those extended editions that I have yet to see in Razor + those final Season 4 episodes.

Good grief, in just the first half hour, ... and when Shelly shows up,
I know. I remember some of the stuff people thought was coming out of nowhere, really was revisiting original stuff from season 1 that had actually been toned down for a while.
While I was left a little bit unsatisfied with the ending, it wasn't for the reasons you cited that others have complained about.
tkbryant 08-26-09, 01:59 AM I received my set today but from Amazon. I finally caved in on Sunday night & placed an order. Box is in pristine condition. I'm torn on the packaging. It looks cool on the top of my shelf. Is it ideal? No way. I don't find it as terribly offensive as some made it out to be though.
I plan on taking them out of the accordion boxes on a season by season basis as I watch them & returning them to the box after I have completed each season. None of my discs are scratched & I don't feel that the coated box covers are abrasive enough to do any damage. I'm pretty careful with my discs & boxes...always have been.
Made it through 3 episodes tonight. BIG difference for me PQ wise. It's not LOST but there are alot of eye candy moments to be had in BSG as well.
The AQ is outstanding, sub really pumps during those closing credits.
My biggest regret is not getting it right away and waiting these past few weeks.

Success! using Acrobat Reader 8, I found the following steps the most useful and intuitive to obtain the desired results to print the BSG booklet created by vicmackey187 into a size that fits inside the season box slots of the big box:
Print Range pages 2-33
Page Scaling: Multiple pages per sheet -> Pages per sheet 2
Page Order: Horizontal
Under Printer Properties:
Setup Tab:
Orientation: Portrait
Duplex: Open to Top (the "top" of the portrait page)
Paper Tab:
Document size 8.5" x 11"
Select Zoom of 95%
Yeah, the Orientation as Portrait is a little non-intuitive, but it seems to not mess up the page ordering as a result.
As a result, it will print on 8.5"x 11" paper, but will not "fill the page" - instead the size is about 95% of full, which seems to be just right for slotting in behind a season box in the original packaging. The image prints about 9.75" wide for two pages, about 6.25" tall.
For inserting staples, assuming you do not have a long-lever stapler, fold open a regular desk stapler and place the stacked pages on a firm low-pile carpet - the staples will go through the paper and "into" the carpet, but the firmness of the carpet can support the paper. You just have to fold the staples over yourself. You might want to practice if you've never done that before - it can be tough keeping the pages aligned while fiddling with the stapler. You can also use a sheet of firm styrofoam or similar material.
This is what worked for me. YMMV. Different versions of Acrobat Reader have different print set-up interfaces. Try a trial page first (e.g. pages 2-5). This is using the v3.0 file, where the instructions are on page 1 and the document order shuffled to match booklet printing order (i.e. not natural page order).
Hope this helps,
shinksma
NeoCortex 08-26-09, 11:55 AM Any suggestions on the best paper to use for this?
Filmmaker 08-26-09, 02:53 PM Ordered 7/30, shipped 8/21, received today, mint. I've read all the (mostly valid) complaints about the internal packaging (looks sexy as hell from the outside, though) and I'm beginning to think that some people aren't aware that the accordion folders in each season's individual boxes can be easily pulled out, so there's no need to dig your fingers under the actual discs to pull them out. It's not convenient packaging by any means but it's also not destructive or a "venus flytrap" for the discs.
mumbles3k 08-26-09, 04:13 PM What I have found interesting is in re-watching the series from the very beginning is how some people have complained there was "too much God" in the finale.
Personally, my problem with the finale was not so much the inclusion of the elements to which you refer, but with how they were used to answer questions which were, up to that point, left intentionally ambiguous. I guess I was just hoping for a better explanation than what we got.
...

How I stapled mine (I tried your method and it deformed the paper more than I liked. crummy carpet): First I folded each page one at a time. Then on the inner page, with a loose staple as reference for the distance between holes, I used a pin to push holes thru the single page in the right places in the groove of the bend. Then put it back in the booklet and pushed holes using the pin thru the rest of the booklet using the inner pages' holes as a guide. Then put two loose staples thru the whole booklet from the outside, then manually bent them over.
Use a sharp sturdy pin, a billboard pin would even work. The staples themselves can be a bit flimsy.
Using a single pin to manually make the holes was soo much easier than using a folded open stapler, or even a big stapler. Manually pushing the pin thru the booklet one hole at a time made for precise stapling.
BaronVH 08-26-09, 04:44 PM I got a really great deal on the complete series only to find that after the two part movie, all the episodes had massively garbled audio at a very loud volume. My receiver is the Pioneer Elite VSX-92, and there was a similar problem with Prince Caspian. I remembered that if I were to set my HDMI audio out to PCM instead of auto that it would fix the problem on Prince Caspian. Low and behold the problem is fixed. I believe it is related to the way the DTS in encoded and the issue is with my receiver. I called Universal to inform them of the issue for future releases.

BaronVH 08-26-09, 05:05 PM I just picked up the Blu-Ray version of the Battestar Galactica series... When I fast forward or reverse and then press play, there is a very loud POP on my speakers. Anyone else experiencing this issue?
My equipment:

Onkyo TX-NR906 receiver
I made a new post about this glitch. The quick solution is to output HDMI to PCM instead of auto.

Season Three Disc One

Are those typos or is one an extended version of the episode? If it is an extended version which one is it?

I think they should as it is the specific way they encode the DTS. Out of almost 300 Blu-rays only this release and Prince Caspian is causing the problem. And the packaging is completely awful. They should be ashamed.

I was among the ones who got in on the $219 price. Of course, the next day, it went down further to $201. I called Customer Service, and not wanting to lose my place in line, opted to have DD take the extra $13+ difference when my order ships.
Well, it shipped a couple days ago. And, with no prompting from me, I just received confirmation email from DD crediting me the difference in price. Pretty pleased with that.
I still haven't seen my DD credit adjustment yet. I'm not worried yet, but I did email them about it yesterday to see if they were just waiting until I acknowledged receipt of the order.

Thanks for the links! I wonder if the discs for the UK version will have the artwork on them. I noticed that some of the discs looked pretty plain, but I wasn't sure if that was because it was the dvd version.
Anybody else torn between the UK and US sets? The US box is really starting to grow on me and it looks like it would look a lot better being displayed on a shelf. (I always keep the cardboard things on the outside anyway) It's basically aesthetics vs practicality at this point...the UK box isn't bad looking, but it's just missing something for me. Maybe it would be better if the trays were more like the buffy dvd set rather than in a slip case. In either case I think I'm starting to appreciate what they tried to do for the US set.
NeoCortex 08-27-09, 11:30 AM Thanks for the links!
I agree completely. I have the US set and think it looks great on a shelf. If it only had proper multi-disc cases for the discs themselves, as well as a summary booklet listing what episodes/extras are on each disc, I would consider it an excellent package design. Fortunately the missing booklet can be easily remedied by printing out the one being worked on in this thread, which seems to look at least as good as what would probably have been packaged by the studio, anyway.

Not to get further off topic, but it would be cool if they had some kind of hard cover book for the show that you could pick up somewhere to go along with it as a companion piece...
Has anyone tried getting the individual sleeves and putting them in where the accordian goes? I'm not usually a fan of using those, but I could see getting those and then printing up the binder info inserts and putting them on the back of each one and putting them back in the cylon boxes.

Got my box today. Box and discs are undamaged.
pencap75 08-27-09, 09:34 PM Just want to share a good experience with Deep Discount. First off, my order finally shipped (which I was willing to wait this long for the really excellent price).
Here is my DD experience. Pre-ordered for a great price for $175, no tax, no shipping. The order arrived on my door on the release date... excellent. HOWEVER, They send me the DVD box instead. I return it, and so far have heard nothing about my blu-ray replacement.
metalsaber 08-28-09, 03:34 PM For Season 1, is the Menu Intro Video/Song the same as the HD-DVD version?
BaronVH 08-28-09, 04:15 PM What blu ray player do you have? Did you try updating the blu ray players' firmware?
fwiw I use a Panasonic bd35, at firmware 2.0, with an Onkyo 875 and the dts master plays fine.
Not a firmware issue. I have 3.25. It is with the receiver. Universal's tech people are researching the issue. It could be defective discs, however.
PCX.com.au have increased the price of bulk quantities of the 6-disc Bluray cases, now (price each in Australian $): 1+ = $5, 50+ = $4.29 (was $3.90), 100+ = $3.19 (was $2.90).

I experienced the same problem last night while watching Season 1 disc 1. I'm using an Onkyo 805 and a OPPO BDP-83, both with the latest official firmware (1.08 for the Onkyo, -0620 for the OPPO).
While the switch to PCM is a solution, this is a hassle. I have little faith in Onkyo releasing a firmware fix...
Considering that this issue shows up on different receiver brands, and the only other disc title that seems to exhibit this same type of problem is Prince Caspian, maybe there is a specific DTS-HD encoding method that causes this "bomb" issue?

Are you bitstreaming? What firmware revision is running on your 875?
bobloblaw 08-29-09, 11:35 AM Anyone experiencing this audio "bomb" able to repeat it? I tried watching the section of the pilot movie again this morning where I heard the "bomb" last night, between ~1hr 10min and ~1hr 17min of Part 1, but it did not occur this time.
Vortex3D 08-29-09, 12:41 PM For Season 1, is the Menu Intro Video/Song the same as the HD-DVD version?
Yes. The Miniseries is also split into two parts like HD DVD but on the same Season 1 disc 1.
tkbryant 08-29-09, 04:59 PM No "bomb" here. I'm using a Pioneer VSX 919 receiver & a Panasonic BD-80 for my setup. Started Disc 2 last night. No problems with disc one at all.
petergaryr 08-29-09, 06:46 PM .... maybe there is a specific DTS-HD encoding method that causes this "bomb" issue?
That would be hard to pin down. I'm using a Panny B30 with a Denon and never have had a problem with any DTS-MA disc. I think the issue is more between the firmware on both receivers and players that is the problem.

That's my suspicion as well. I sent an email to OPPO about it and they said they have this BSG collection and will be testing it with the BDP-83 and the receivers they have on hand.
linesiders 08-30-09, 12:51 PM Got my BD set from Deep Discount the other day (on sale after Bing) and I'll echo many of the previous comments.
Packaging is lousy - really bad.
What Disc Guide? Spent 20 minutes looking for the right disc to show my son the Beast saving the Bucket.
Watching the Mini-Series in HD on a 40" Samsung beats the blank out of the cable and standard def TV I had at the time. :D
Quality looks good but I'm seeing a lot of PQ issues more due to the fact I'm testing my assembled yesterday 780G HTPC that I need to do a lot of troubleshooting on. I doubt that is a disc issue and much more likely the fact that this system is untweaked.
Thanks for the links, suggestions, and better covers
Where can I find out where to get Blu-ray cases, I am new to the site and I haven't got a clue.
JakiChan 08-31-09, 03:15 AM Got my vlad cases today...he rocks. Now I just need to find/print some good cover art.

I have an Onkyo 805 and the Oppo 83, believe I have the latest FW's but I haven't checked Onkyo since I did the upgrade for the audio bomb back when Alien vs Predator 2 / Fly bomb detected. I am not having any issue with BSG, I'm starting the 3rd season right now.
shinksma 08-31-09, 09:07 AM Where can I find out where to get Blu-ray cases, I am new to the site and I haven't got a clue.
Amazon sells them (or rather Amazon third-party resellers sell them through Amazon). But only one one or two-disk cases. Sleevetown.com also sells two-disk cases.
Multiple-disk cases exist, but are harder to find in North America. There is an Aussie manufacturer/distributor that sells six-disk cases, but you have to purchase "locally" - a forum member "Vlad" arranged for some to be acquired for other forum members.
Basically, there seems to be little demand at this point for anything beyond two-disk cases. So all we can do is surf the interwebs and see what we can find, or stick with a known entity like Amazon and get two-disk cases.
This topic probably needs to be a separate sticky thread in this forum.
AFAIK,

I finally had a chance to watch a bit of BSG Blu-Ray this weekend, and I was VERY impressed with the image quality, at least in the season four episode I chose at random. Sound also seems a bit better than the HD-DVD version.

Glad you haven't experienced any issues. You are definitely bitstreaming to the 805? If you could confirm your firmware versions it would be great.

One other option is to look for Blade Runner Complete Edition (5-disc case) on sale or used. It's currently at $22, but often go on sale for much cheaper. So, you can buy multiple copies, sell the discs, and use the case.

I believe BSG runs;
S1: 4 discs
S2: 5 discs
S3: 5 discs
S4: 6 discs
So, 4 of those Blade Runner cases would work, as long as you don't mind one of your S4 discs (or Razor) being in your S1 case.
Nathan Webel 08-31-09, 08:04 PM Also, to vläd - received the cases today and all discs are safely in. They are great! I removed one of the trays from the S1 case to make it a '4-discer', and I put in the custom covers posted here. (Which fit perfectly end to end, but need about an 1/8" trim from the top to completely be behind the plastic.) Otherwise they are PERFECT and it already looks great on the shelf!
Now if we can get a creative-minded soul to get some season inserts/episode lists going, that would be the icing on the cake!
Glad you haven't experienced any issues. You are definitely bitstreaming to the 805? If you could confirm your firmware versions it would be great.
Yes, I'm bitstreaming. I know I have the latest Oppo fw, did the update approx. a week ago. I'll have to check my Onkyo.:)
