View Full Version : Linux-compatible streaming video links
mythmaster 02-21-09, 02:16 PM Most sites that stream flash video work in Linux. We will maintain a list of sites here that are known to work, and we will also list those that don't. Please post additional links in this thread, and they will be added to this post.

*** It has been reported that Blockbuster works, but I haven't tried it.
Does NOT work with Linux- wants OSX or Windows via a proprietary plugin you must download-
http://abc.go.com/
Please don't count any sites as "working" that only work in Wine and not Linux native.

My bad...didn't really try it. :)
sharkcohen 02-21-09, 07:14 PM Netflix streaming does not work, it requires ActiveX.

We need to complain on their feedback page. If they have an OSX plugin that work undex Firefox - it should be trivial for them to make a generic build for Linux.
We need to complain on their feedback page. If they have an OSX plugin that work undex Firefox - it should be trivial for them to make a generic build for Linux.
The big, serious issue is, WHY DO THEY NEED A SPECIAL PLUGIN in the first place?!
Basically, the web is fracturing- ISP bandwidth caps, ISP discrimination by sites like ESPN360.com, requiring special plugins to view content other than Flash or mpg/avi/qt.
We don't want the plugin, we want them to stop making arbitrary, proprietary exceptions to web standards.
Tell them you'll go watch cbs.com, hulu, nbc, revision3, etc instead of their site, and why.
mythmaster 02-22-09, 06:39 PM I'm not going to tell them anything, I'll just seed more.
Didn't intend to devolve this thread into an open standards rant ;)
Please continue to post links to (legal) streaming video sites, and please indicate those that don't work in Linux and why (special plugin, tied to IE, checks for Windows in the User Agent, etc).
ligaguine 02-23-09, 08:43 PM PBS has full episodes of their shows online and they all seem to play for me.

mythmaster 03-17-09, 02:29 AM Updated.
Don't know if this one should go sticky or not...
Veoh is listed as "does not work" with Linux, but I just played this Flash (the superhero ;) ) episode in Ubuntu 8.10/Flash 10 and it appears fine, though I only played about a minute-
http://www.veoh.com/collection/The-Flash#watch%3Dv17459452ZXfHTGw8
Quite hilarious-
http://support.tnt.tv/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=5477
(replace "Mac" with "Linux"...)
"TNT.tv would like to apologize for not being able to accommodate Mac users.
The issue is related to the Windows Media Player, specifically video with Digital Rights Management (DRM). This is because the WMP for the Mac is not supported directly by Microsoft . Our agreement with the studios that produce the shows stipulates that their content be protected (full episodes) from piracy with DRM software.
Additionally, WMP is more universal than other platforms like QuickTime and Flash Video for distributing protected content"
The last line shows how out of touch they are. Flash is now the top streaming video "standard" on the web. Unfortunately, Flash 11 or 12 will probably enforce DRM...
For the sites that don't work- you might want to add a brief description why after each listed site, i.e. "WMP DRM'd content", "Checks UserAgent browser string", "Uses proprietary plugin", etc.
www.fox.com - requires proprietary plugin download for OSX/Win
mythmaster 03-17-09, 02:35 PM Veoh is listed as "does not work" with Linux, but I just played this Flash (the superhero ;) ) episode in Ubuntu 8.10/Flash 10 and it appears fine, though I only played about a minute-

Yeah, the previews work, but you have to dl a plugin to watch a full movie, and I was unable to get the plugin to work.
zim2dive 03-17-09, 03:25 PM I won't get a chance to verify it (slammed at work.. heh just a little time to surf), but I didn;t see joost on the list.

Seems fine...THX
mythmaster 03-19-09, 11:43 AM OK, I'm getting audio (and video) from NASA now using realplayer 11 --> http://www.real.com/linux
The live feed is here --> http://www.nasa.gov/ram/35037main_portal.ram
There's an EVA today at 12:13 PM Central Time. :)
EDIT: That was awesome! They were out there over 6 hours!!!
Northern Man 03-19-09, 08:42 PM Since this is the Linux HTPC thread, how about sites that are optimized for use on a Linux HTPC, like YouTube TV.
mythmaster 03-20-09, 01:45 AM Added YouTube TV into new "OTHER" category, but I linked to blog post that shows how to switch user agents to be able to watch it.
THX, Northern Man. :)
Here is an interesting list of web video sites-
http://techcityinc.com/2008/12/20-free-websites-to-watch-tv-shows-movies-online/
Some have been posted already and host "legal" content, and some appear to stream "illegal" content.
It's funny how you can watch pirated movies/shows from realtime streaming sites like this, but get hit with a copyright violation notice if you bt a current hot movie, according to reports I've heard...
What's with YouTube TV? I don't see a volume slider, let alone options for HQ or HD video... Seems like a stripped, albeit 10-ft, interface.
mythmaster 04-14-09, 08:32 PM Added TV-Fox https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/11200
