As per The Digital Bits from Feb. 19...

From this point on, Warner intends to release all catalog BDs with Dolby TrueHD audio. (They've taken note of complaints about the lack of one on Casablanca.) Gone with the Wind, Woodstock, The Wizard of Oz and North by Northwest will all be released on Blu-ray later this year."

This certainly sounds like good news to me. You'd have to think if they are doing this for catalog titles they would have to do it for new releases as well.

Great news! Hopefully Warner is also taking notes on other complaints, such as filtering video transfers.

I will believe it when I see it.

Now if they would just learn how to up the video encoder rate too. They seem to think that 15Mbps is the max BD will support.

I think that's key right there!!

In truth since 2009, all the catalog titles i'm aware of have been released or announced with a TRUEHD track (save AMERICAN IN PARIS, who knows maybe that will get a TRUEHD track like BEING THERE). I thought that maybe Warner had quietly turned around their audio policy for all their releases till I saw NIGHTS IN RODANTHE released in DD.

Bottom-line, all releases merit a lossless track, even if you don't believe it will make an audio difference. The key word here is consistency. All the other film releasing studios consistenly release lossless, Warner is the only one who doesn't. Just when you see a title announced, you dampen your enthusiasm as you want to wait and see if it's going to be released in lossless.

I don't think it is an issue of catalog vs new titles. All Warner movies with double-dipping potential will be 640K DD. Anything with little such potential will be lossless. All high-profile releases (such as the Dark Knight) will get lossless because they know they can't get away with it, but they will cripple it in some other way (such as Amadeus which is missing the Oscar winning version, or the Dark Knight without the option of constant aspect ratio and problematic PQ).

I find that generally if you are looking for a "perfect" version, you won't get it from Warner, but I am much more likely to get it from some of the other studios.

Wow. Excellent analysis there Beta Tester. With Warner we have to wait for years or maybe even a decade to get the HOLY GRAIL edition.

Could they make it 24-bit while they're at it?

Hear hear!

And bring back 7.1 mixes in 24 bit too! When they absorbed New Line into the fold they dropped the 24 bit, 7.1 support!!

Darn you, WB!!
