i saw this is out on bluray. and after watching amadeus again. i was thinking why not try and buy a real opera for a change.
so could anybody who have rented or bought Die Zauberflote - Mozart tell me, how the picture quality or audio quality is?
thanks
If you are speaking of the Opus Arte Blu-Ray disc, it's very good. Both audio and video are excellent. The video is 1080i, as it was shot for TV broadcast if I recall. The audio is PCM 5.1, and the sound is very good.

Have a look here:

All Opus Arte releases have good PQ and always PCM or Dolby TrueHD for audio.

thanks for the replies. seems to be great. i buy it :)
If you like opera, you might check the discussion thread at http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=849571. It's a little misplaced (under HDTV Software Media Discussion), but has some very good content about new and current releases.

As already discussed elsewhere here, there are issues with this production: soundstage and camera shots which may or may not bother you. On the artistic side Simon K is well worth hearing.
I have found the recent DG and Decca releases to be more enjoyable and they are quite a bit less expensive so personally I'm turning to DG and Decca in the foreseeable future.:)
