I figured right in the title I'd ask my questions to avoid getting people's hopes up... Just wondering if anyone knows anything about an arcade release or an updated version of this absolute classic. Countless hours were wasted on this game as a youth. A new version with updated graphics and weapons and online would be an absolute dream come true! Remember way back when, just cruising the countryside with your chain in hand. Somebody rolls up on you and sticks a metal pipe in your wheel
or kicking the crap out of the cops!

I'd love to see an updated version of this, as well. I spent no telling how much time playing that game many years ago. Classic.

I saw an article on IGN a month or two ago and they were going to make another one, but the studio that was doing it got nixed due to the economy and the game died with them. I was looking forward to seeing this game again too!

I practically bought a 3D0 just to play its version of Road Rash, I'd love any update or even a retro arcade release.

No idea if there will be an actual Road Rash, but GTA4: Lost and Damned has a set of races that is very similar to the game, except you can only use a baseball bat.

Love & Missed Road Rash. What was the latest platform it was available on? I think we still have a Nintendo 64 & Sega Gensis somewhere in storage.

I had a 3do, prertty good piece of hardware, but sony took all the developers away for the ps1.

A new road rash would be great IMO

There were at least 2 for PS1. Road Rash 3d and one I never played called Jailbreak. I have the first one, it was ok. I think there was one for Nintendo 64.

I was one of the few people on the planet that had a Panasonic 3DO early on in it's lifespan. (got an open box 3DO early in 1994) When Road Rash finally came out for the system, it was the game that basically justified me spending 400 snappers on that machine. I absolutely loved Road Rash for the 3DO. The music was just fantastic. Not too long ago I played the old 3DO game again, and the music really brought me back to that early to mid 90's feeling. I ended up researching and discovering which bands and which songs were on that soundtrack, and I ended up hunting down all the albums that the songs were on. It was pretty freaking cool. "Jesse" from PAW, was probably my favorite song on that soundtrack.

There have been a number of rumors about EA bringing Road Rash back from the dead over the last 4 or 5 years. So far, none of the rumors have panned out. I'm not really sure if I could see a modern day Road Rash for $59.99. The gameplay mechanics of riding on a motorcycle, and swinging at other riders with a lead pipe probably wouldn't go over so well as a $59.99 full featured release. I'm not saying that the gameplay of Road Rash wouldn't be fun in 2009, but I just don't think it would be "enough" for modern day gamers. If it was a PSN game, or a Xbox Live Arcade type game for $20 or even $30, then I think it could work.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see....

Road Rash was one of the games that made the 3DO worth buying, the soundtrack especially. If I remember correctly mine came bundled with the soundtrack CD, which is probably impossible to find now.

O ya I bought the panny 3D0 about 5 months after release in canada for a cool $690 lol!
I loved road rash (the awesome videos from Paw "jessie" and soundgarden "rusty cage" and 1 or 2 more I can't remember. Need for speed and my personal fav "Return Fire" were amazing. The 3d0 was great piece of hardware for it's day.

Does anyone remember that color game you got with the system, that you could swirl the colors and make all weird stuff and it spun like a vortex? Now that was some trippy stuff man lol

I used to play the crap out of shockwave, star control 2, and some car game with weapons on it. I don't remember the name. I love the 3d0. Oh yeah, I also like mad dog mcree with the light gun, and the cop game as well.

I remember in the store crying and screaming at my mom to buy me a 3do. I think I may have threatened to run away. She didn't cave in, maybe she wanted me to actually do it :(

The car game with weapons was probably Crash 'n Burn, another great 3DO title from Crystal Dynamics.

I used to own a 3DO as well; I actually bought mine full price ($700) when it first came out. A great console with graphics that were truly extraordinary for its time. There were a lot of gems on that console: Total Eclipse, Crash 'n Burn, Sockwave, the very first Need for Speed game, Super Wing Commander, a great version of Madden, etc.

And of course there was Road Rash for the 3DO, easily the best version of the game with some really great visuals, especially compared to the 16bit versions that were released. I was even superior to the PS1 version that came out later.

I remember somehow scrounging up the cash to buy it when I was in college. I have no idea why I paid in cash, but I figure I didn't want anyone who might see my bank statement to know what I was about to drop on a toy (I think it was $500, tax and another $40 or 50 for Road Rash). I was trekking around Boston that afternoon and constantly checking my pockets to make sure I hadn't lost my wallet. Then I walked home a mile or so with this gigantic bag full of goodies. At the time it was the most expensive frivolous purchase I had made in my 20 years and I think that was gnawing away at my conscience the whole time.

One thing that really bothers me is how the 3DO doesn't get much respect from gamers. Anytime I hear the 3DO mentioned on a podcast or something, it's usually with some snide remarks. I can see people having negative feelings about the Sega 32X or Atari Jaguar (two pretty lame systems if you're really honest with yourself, lol), but not the 3DO. One thing people fail to remember is that the 3DO launched in October of 1993. 19 freaking 93. A good friend of mine actually dropped the full $699.99 on it, plus tax, when it was first released. I came over to his house and played Crash N Burn with him. (It was the pack-in game at the time).

Playing a game like Crash N Burn in late 1993 at home seemed like an impossible dream. Here was a game that actually looked better than the games that were currently at the arcades. Truthfully, Crash N Burn wasn't that great a game from a gameplay standpoint, but I still have very fond memories of it. The graphics and sounds were so far beyond everything else at that time. You have to realize that people were playing Super Nintendo and Genesis games at that time, and comparing a game like Crash N Burn to those games was like comparing a Super Nintendo game to an Atari 2600 game.

I think in January 1994, Total Eclipse came out, and that was another game that knocked our socks off. Again, the gameplay ultimately was pretty lame, but the graphics and sounds were just so far beyond anything else at that point in time. I think Madden came out a month or so later (even though it was after the football season), and I was such a hardcore madden lover at that time. (Madden '93 for the Genesis was one of the all-time best sports games ever, IMHO). Living on the West Coast, there was this chain of stores called "The Good Guys!". Basically they were a Best Buy, Circuit City type store. They had an open box 3DO for $549.99. I ended up buying it, along with Madden. At the time, The Good Guys! had a 60 day return policy. My plan was to play the thing for 60 days, and return it. If I felt like I absolutely couldn't live without it, I'd keep it. So, I played the thing for like 59 days and returned it. (I know.... what an A-hole, lol).

As fun as it was, I just couldn't justify that much money on it. I still had the copy of Madden, and was going to sell it in the classifieds of the local paper. But, before I got around to selling it, about a month later or so, the 3DO had it's first price drop. I can't remember how much the price dropped, but I went back to that Good Guys, and they still had that open box 3DO sitting there, except this time it was marked down to $399.99. I couldn't pass it up at that price, so I ended up buying it and keeping it. I'm pretty sure this was around April 1994. I was pretty thrilled at the time to get the 3DO about 6 months after launch for $300 less than my buddy paid, heh heh.

Anyone who thought it sucked probably never owned one. I had a Goldstar 3DO in 94? and also picked up one of the newer panasonic FZ-10 units when they were on clearance. The 3DO was worth buying for Street Fighter alone, since the 16 bit versions were an absolute joke in comparison. The remixed soundtrack in that game is one of my favorite game soundtracks ever.

Throw in Need for Speed, Road Rash, Total Eclipse, Samurai Showdown, Out of This World, Quarantine, and several others and it was worth owning for the "hardcore." Too bad their stubborn refusal to drop prices kept them niche at best. Being $299 during the PlayStation launch pretty much sealed the 3DO's fate.

Star Control and Return Fire are probably the other standouts.

I was trying to play Street Fighter a while back, it honestly was the best home version available at the time, but I couldn't figure out how to get the control set up I liked. I could swear I had it set up at one point where holding a shoulder button would act like a "shift" key to switch between punch and kick, but maybe I am wrong about that.

I still have my 3D0 but can only find one of the controllers. I think it came out in between generations and so its best compared to the Jaguar, CD-I and maybe the Sega CD/32x combo, of which it is far and away the best of the bunch. Comparing it to the PS/Saturn doesn't do it the justice it deserves.

Return Fire was awesome. The 3DO control setup sucked for Street Fighter, having to use one of the start buttons as a punch/kick was pretty bad. Not to mention that the D-pad itself was pretty awful, I remember the trick of loosening the screws in back to make it better. I don't recall being able to shift the buttons, I know that was available in in the horrible genesis version though. The super nintendo controller adapter for the 3DO made all of that pretty moot anyways.

Wing Commander III was probably the best 3DO game. I knew people who bought the system just for that game. At the time it totally blew away the pc version. Road Rash was fun as well. I loved the videos with the cops busting the guy. Gex was another gem later ported over to the ps1. And I could never get enough of the digital pictures games like Night Trap and Corpse Killer. And Space Pirates was the absolute cheeziest light gun game ever.

I bought more 3DO games back in the day than I can remember. Some other standouts not already mentioned include: Star Fighter, Escape From Monster Manor, Deathkeep, PO'd, FLashback, Starblade and Space Hulk.

Forgot about Gex which was probably one of the last platform games I truly enjoyed. Just not my thing as I got older. I skipped most of the FPS games except Killing Time. My favorite Digital Pictures game was probably the QB centered football game for Saturn. On the 3D0 it may have been Shadow Warrior.

Remember Way of the Warrior? It was Naughty Dog's first real game. Sure, it was a silly Mortal Kombat type clone, but it was pretty decent. Much better if you had the SNES to 3DO controller adapter. The stock 3DO control pad had horrible diagonals, making most fighting games on the 3D0 very frustrating. If you had the SNES to 3DO adapter, you could use any SNES controller, and the control was significantly better with that.

Another game that hasn't been mentioned is AD&D Slayer. Basically this was Oblivion back in 1994, lol.

I didn't mention Way of the Warrior because its trash. Once SF and SS came to the system there was no reason to play Way of the Warrior unless I couldn't find my White Zombie cd.
