View Full Version : The Midnight Meat Train
General Kenobi 02-22-09, 01:27 PM I rented this after reading Ralph's excellent review on it and watched it last night. At first I thought I was not going to like it with some of the CGI gore I wasn't so sure it would deliver. I really ended up enjoying it though! PQ was excellent and the story seemed to get better as it progressed. I won't spoil anything for anyone but I really enjoyed how things ended up, very cool and unexpected.
This is really worth a rent for any horror/gore-fest fans!
I saw it and I thought it was horrible. Everyone has their own tastes though.

Agreed! Watched this Fri and for the first ~20 minutes I was like "ehhh", but as it went on I got more into it and the way it ended realy made the movie IMO. I liked it:) AQ was also VERY good I thought!
raoul_duke 02-22-09, 02:12 PM The best bit was the Forrest Gump gag, the rest of it was trash. Vinnie Jones should definitely play a Terminator, though.
cnikirk 02-22-09, 03:38 PM I enjoyed it quite a bit. The gore was really over the top. The PQ is excellent. No DNR, grain is intact.

Couldn't have said it better. I watched it Friday night as well, and at first it was ok but nothing special. Then it picked up and the ending really did make the movie.
PQ/AQ were both excellent.
A good one,best sound too.
the thing wnn 02-23-09, 06:20 AM for anyone who has read the Barker short story and seen this film, can they tell me - does it end the same way? (no spoilers though for any casual readers)
thanks :)
Govgrim 02-23-09, 09:51 AM The short story ends VERY similarly to the way the movie does. You have to understand that it is based on a short story and there is A LOT that got added in to get it to fit into the feature length run time.

as long as they have the whole 'old monsters deep underground feeding off the meat' bit then thats great

They did a great job with those... good stuff!
Besides, even if you hated the movie at least you get some Leslie Bibb in HD;)
mdc3000 02-23-09, 01:24 PM I thought this movie was intense and pretty damn wicked - the BD is a fine presentation and I was very happy with my purchase.
General Kenobi 02-23-09, 01:37 PM I forgot to watch any of the extras and am not familiar with the short story but can someone fill me in on:
What was the deal with the things that Vinnie Jones was cutting off his chest and saving? Also was there anything more to whatever sickness he had and why he was coughing up blood?

What was the deal with the things that Vinnie Jones was cutting off his chest and saving? Also was there anything more to whatever sickness he had and why he was coughing up blood? This is what I think. Vinnie Jones didn't seem completely human. The train operator said he didn't have what it takes anymore like he was getting sick of it which tells me he used to be fully human. With how the camera kept giving focus to the scratches to the chest given to the protagonist it looks like the butchers are given a mutant infection to give them superhuman strength. The train operator seemed like this too.
I checked this out over the weekend and as a movie I thought it was good.

Hmmm... that's not what I took away from it.
I thought the scratch to the chest was like a branding, some sort of ownership or employee mark and I didn't see any super human strength in any of the fights. Maybe it was some sort of infection that mutates a person into one of the creatures and Vinnie Jones body was rejecting the change so he was dying? Still doesn't explain why he was cutting off only a couple at a time and saving them in a jar?
I do agree though
that the train operator seemed to have super human strength but Vinnie Jones did not seem any stronger than a couple others that put up a fight imo

I am glad to hear that you enjoyed it..! :)
Cheers,

Hmmm, maybe you are right
I just thought he seemed pretty much human agains the big military guy. I still think that his body was rejecting the mutation which was why he was getting weak.
I wonder if any of the extras explain it?

Maybe Clive shares some secrets in the commentary track :)
I always like it when movies don´t explain everything and creates a mystery where you have to use your own imagination to fill in the "blanks", especially horror movies like this one :)
Sadly most movies today HAVE to over explain EVERYTHING ;)

Sadly most movies today HAVE to over explain EVERYTHING ;)And the biggest mystery of all, why humans? Why not cows and pigs? The train operator said they were older than the human race so they did fine without human meat back then. I'll just notch it down as the monsters wanting it not just as a food but also a sacrificial offering of goodwill.
I am a fan of the director, Ryuhei Kitamura, and I was glad that he was able to bring some of his trademark visual flair to this film. I'm not a big horror fan though and most of the twists in the plot were projected well in advance.
I checked out a bit of the commentary track and it seems like Barker was quite satisfied with what Kitamura did with his story. They kept teasing that they would talk about the infighting that took place during post production, but I didn't get far enough into the commentary to hear that story. It did seem like a very interesting and honest commentary though.
JaylisJayP 02-25-09, 05:00 PM Just finished watching this, quite entertaining. Unique horror movie that I'll definitely be watching again.

I ordered a copy from amazon marketplace, I know I will watch it again and I really want to check out all the extras now.
General Kenobi 03-11-09, 12:30 PM Ok, so I watched some of the extras and listened to some commentary last night and here’s what was said about Mahogany
He’s sick and tumorous from spending so many years in contact with the creatures. He saves the pieces of flesh he removes as mementos, kind of like a Brundle Fly thing. I didn’t hear anything that explained the train operator but I didn’t listen to all the commentary, just skipped around.
eddy_winds 03-11-09, 01:02 PM I thought it was good.
This BD was good for me,PQ and SQ sound good. The horror movie, you must see and many scenes was yuck!
robertc88 10-07-09, 02:18 PM I watched it a few days ago via a rental. I will never buy it but I thought the movie was pretty decent.
Nice PQ and AQ to reiterate other's experiences watching this BD.
