View Full Version : Infocus X10 for $1800???
spectrumbx 02-22-09, 01:48 PM Update:
-------
Some users have bought this PJ for less than $1,000.
Tigerdirect is selling it for $1,299 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=4490483&sku=I427-2128
If you buy from the Tigerdirect's eBay store, there is a MS cashback of 13%.
If you sign up for eBates, there is an additional 3% cashback.
So:
$1299
- 168.87 (MS eBay cashback)
- 38.97 (eBates)
------
= $1,091.16
There was an additional $200 rebate that expired on 03/31/2009.
Also, shipping is higher (for many) if you buy on eBay than on Tigerdirect's own site.
For those of us being charged taxes, I have found that I was charged a lesser tax amount buying from the eBay store than on the direct site (about $15 tax saving).
gwlaw99 03-27-09, 12:15 PM wow awesome price at tiger
rfisher 03-27-09, 01:09 PM I got one!
anirbana 03-27-09, 03:51 PM bargain price:eek:
Projectorpeople has the X10 for $1289 with $200 rebate through 3-31-09.
Does the rebate apply for a Tigerdirect purchase. I know the 2 year warranty is honored by Infocus if bought through Tigerdirect.
Projector People is the forum sponsor. Lots of good feedback about them on this forum. The price with $200 rebate is hot!!!
bhayes505 03-28-09, 01:09 AM This seems like a fantastic deal. I was going to order a HD65 this weekend but this has changed my mind. I will probably be ordering this tomorrow.
brandonnash 03-28-09, 01:16 AM Wish I was in the market for one of these right now. I need a BIG screen and this would help. 55" is just not big enough for me. Great price.
gwlaw99 03-28-09, 09:33 AM Wow Never thought I'd see 1080p for $1100 this soon.
Fragster 03-28-09, 12:16 PM Hey Guys
What DC chip does the X10 uses? I'm seriously considering upgrading my VP4001 (DCII) to the X10 but I'd like to know what chip it uses before I make up my mind.
Thanks
Fragster if you do end up wanting to upgrade and are looking to sell the VP4001, look me up. If you're selling for a reasonable price I'm your man.
johnnykretentiv 03-28-09, 12:31 PM Wow this is a sweet deal. I am having some issues with my Z3 as of late and am back in the market. That last time I shopped for pj it took me months to make up my mind. It seems anti-climactic to just jump on this one so soon, considering I like the hunt. But I just might go for it!

It is a DC1 chip same as my IN80. But performs better than my old 3 DC2 chip DLPs

Dark Chip 1. From the reviews ( projector reviews and trusted reviews) I read the black levels suffer due to it but the color engine used is the same as the X10's big brother IN83. So the image quality is its strength.
Art thought it was a good projector for the money, sans the black level. But it's low level black detail reproduction was second to none.

But now that it is $1300, I consider it a steal, and have ordered mine. :D
Does anyone know if the Infocus X10 can use the same mounting bracket as the Infocus 4805?
You can get this under $1000 if you're creative :)

The placement flexibility is zilch also.
The placement flexibility is zilch also.
That's the thing. This is a great deal, and REALLY has me tempted to upgrade, but the X10's very long throw (1.89 - 2.22 TR) and steep offset (36%) means it won't work for all. Double check if it will work in your room before you buy.
So tempted by this deal..
I did some math using this projector calculator (http://www.infocus.com/ProjectionCalculator.aspx?part={027AE79F-666F-49B1-8815-7721FC3B7B2D}&pro=1) comparing it to my current trusty 4805 which is currently housed on a sofa table behind my couch.
When comparing the offset given 14'7" from wall with my 94" screen equating for zoom (1.04x with X10, 1.0x with 4805)
I calculated the following but I'm unsure if this is correct:
4805 offset is 12.8"
X10 offset is 16.6"
This sound right? Is the X10 a big difference from my existing 4805? And the bigger question is, will this work for me assuming the same location?
I currently have to prop up the back of my projector to get it to project correctly onto my screen (see image below)

That's why I went with the Epson 6500UB. The things that sold me on the Epson were:
Better blacks, way better
Better placement
FI (great for animation and HDTV sports)
Longer lamp life
Better warranty overnight replacement available (even though I can't swap my projector until they get units in, which won't be another 1-2 weeks. Hey it's a new projector.)
I owned an Infocus IN72, it was great and I have nothing against Infocus. This was actually the projector I was considering, until I moved and found out I needed the flexibility of a LCD.

I would expect to see these benefits in a projector costing 3x the price.

I don't know where you get that number, I paid $2100 for my Epson.
johnnykretentiv 03-28-09, 09:17 PM Man those screen shots look amazing.
I was just at best buy and saw the Epson 6100 there for $2K. It was tempting but I know the longer I wait the cheaper it gets.
Part of me thinks my Z3 just needs a new lamp but I would hate to spend 300 - 400 on a lamp to find out its' not the lamp and it's something else. Then I'm kinda toast.
Plus I want some 1080p action. I just bought a a Onkyo 906 receiver (last week, that's why spending ANOTHER $2K+ on a projector is a little tough) and would like to max out it's capabilities.

Epson 6500UB is available for just over $2100 after rebate, no reason to buy the 6100.

Where at? Is it a sponsor? My head is spinning with numbers and I probably just missed that one. That is really what I want. THX!
Well, I really couldn't pass this up, so I just bought one. I was considering getting a new lamp for my IN76 at some point in the next 3 or 4 months, but with this price and the rebate, it's not much more to just get the X10 (if I factor in selling the IN76).
Wow, talk about out of the blue. I wasn't even considering upgrading and today I just bought a new PJ because this deal is just ridiculous. As long as the contrast and black level of the X10 is close to the IN76, I'll be a happy camper. I will need to re-engineer my setup to get it to work however, oh well...

It would flip and reverse the image but I don't have a manual to see if it can do this.

NTHEZONE, how do you do that? Do you visit Tigerdirect thru Ebay? Also, where does it say you get 14% instead of the 5% obtained by logging directly into live.com? I'd love to know how this works.

I was thinking about it but wasn't sure the $200 rebate would qualify via ebay.
For the extra $25, I'd go through TigerDirect.com to ensure you save the $200 on a rebate.
kaczmarczyk 03-29-09, 12:00 PM Well, I pulled the trigger on this deal. This will be my first projector so I am looking forward to seeing the positive reviews of this unit first hand. Looks I now have to have my contractor finishing my basement to move my electrical and hdmi connections back 2 feet.
By the way I went through Tiger Direct with the 12% cash back which was $156. Hopefully the $200 rebate will come through and I'll have this project shipped for under $975.
When I go to Live.com, the cashback is 5%. How do I get the 12 or 14% mentioned by some of you guys?

the cofee table/projector is behind the couch, above head level. so no

Type in just Infocus and on the right column you will see the gold circle and the Tigerdirect link for the 12%, scroll the pages until you see the 14% ebay link, page 8 I believe.
Great deal by the way.

Anyone care to comment on this projector compared to the Infocus 7210?

Are their offsets similar?
I will try to find out now.

Here is the calculation if you tilt the upward in degress will give you back some inches. you will also have to tilt the Screen the same amount of degrees. This will mostly benefit Ceiling mount , because table mount will tilt the screen upward.
at 14'7"
Degrees and screen offset adjustment
1° = 3 1/16"
2° = 6 1/8"
3° = 9 3/16"
4° = 12 1/4"
5° = 15 5/16"
Here is the formula just multiply the distance in Inches by the numbers below
Degrees Rise per inch
1° 0.0175
2° 0.035
3° 0.0525
4° 0.07
5° 0.0875
slavenya 03-30-09, 06:33 PM Hi guys,
I am new into the whole projector thing. So I need you advice.
According to my calculation X10 will fit into my room just perfectly.
But still, I want your help in review and correct/comment me if I am wrong.
I scratched my room. Please, see image attached.
The room has windows that could be shut out completely.
There is no screen right now, but I will (with your help) create some DIY screen.

Take a picture of your room I don't understand your drawing.
But if you have 189 inch throw then you basically can use a wall mount if there is a wall there behind the couch. and get around a 96 to 106 screen.

Sorry, for not explaining myself clearly.
There is a wall behind coach. And yes I am planning to use wall mount. Which gives me 190" - minus projector length throw way.
The wall from the opposite side is basiclly plain wall with 102 of usable width and 67 of usable height (height could be increased if needed but it demands some construction work - moving outlet).

As suggested I photographed my room.
Certainly not the best photo in my live, but give an idea of what it looks like.

They changed the offset to accomidate people with larger rooms and higher ceilings. That is why I no longer have an InFocus projector. Too bad... At times I miss my 4805.
Great price, though.
mikieson 03-31-09, 09:23 AM The offset is a bummer for me. I could do it but it's gonna be a pain. Why the hell does infocus have such a ridiculous offset on their projectors!
What does "offset do?" and why do people say DLP might not work for me in my room? Whats the difference in DLP and LCD projectors?
I got in on this yesterday - 14% Cashback through Ebay with TigerDirect and the $200 rebate was too good to pass up.
As for the Offset, don't worry too much. I've had DLP projectors with high offsets before. Simply tilt the projector up slightly and angle the screen forward (pull back towards rear wall from the bottom) to square the image. This is simple, works well, and actually looks cool.
Mine should be here Thursday. I'm keeping my fingers crossed about the eligibility of the rebate at this price. I don't think InFocus intended the rebate to apply to the 'blowout" price, since it's practically a sure thing that the dealers were given financial offsets to allow them to sell at this ridiculously low price. The dealer original cost must have been much higher than the selling price. Also, notice TigerDirect isn't mentioning the rebate.
I'll be pleasantly surprised if we get the rebate, but maybe I'm just being overly cynical.

I'm in the same boat - X10 to arrive from Tiger Direct on Thursday, and skeptical about the odds of collecting on the rebate. But an earlier poster on this thread called Infocus, as did a couple of posters on this slickdeals.net thread (http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=1249423&page=2) regarding the $100 rebate on the X-9. All report that Tigerdirect is an authorized Infocus dealer.

I got mine from PP, who are also authorized. I don't think the authorized part is the problem though - I just think InFocus is going to deny the rebate claim on the basis that it only applies to X10's sold at the original MAP ($2299). Hope I'm wrong though! :)
I bought one from Projectorpeople and in their page they state the price as: "U$ 1080 (after Infocus rebate)". So If Infocus denies the rebate, I think PP have a problem.

Ordered mine from Tiger on Saturday and for only having a $4 shipping charge, it arrived today! Really looking forward to checking it out....
dysfunction26 03-31-09, 10:49 PM I am almost tempted to order one for my bedroom, but really can't justify spending another $1,000 on a projector when I just dished out $2,100 for my Epson 1080UB...lol.
phew... that was close. completed the order just prior to midnight eastern (time on receipt from tigerdirect according to CSR). live.com cashback (13%now) from ebay is there, and crossing my fingers there are no rebate hassles. under $1k shipped for a new 1080p DLP projector. pretty darn cool. can't wait to get it and start watching movies. blu ray player? check. 7.1 lossless sound? check. large screen 1080p? check. now, which movie will be the first??? kind of a sucker for the pixar stuff with my kids... time to host a movie night :D

How do you get $4 shipping?
anirbana 04-01-09, 04:54 AM Under $1000 is a great bargain for this PJ. When it first came out the UK price was around £850 that is around $1223 and the US price at that time I assume was in the range of $2000-$2300.
The UK price has gone up to £1069 which is $1538. So at this time getting this wonderful PJ under $1000 is amazing.
I own the IN80 which uses the same chasis and DC1 chip like the X10 but slightly better and in line with the IN81/82/83. I saw the X10 before I bought the IN80.

To bad the IN80 is not in the US, right above the X10.
I finally found the manual online.
not exactly for the X10 but close enough.
Manual (http://www.knollsystems.com/tech-docs/hdpmanual.pdf)
Also I found a nice Calculator for it too.

Tweakophyte 04-02-09, 08:21 AM What does "offset do?" and why do people say DLP might not work for me in my room? Whats the difference in DLP and LCD projectors?
Offset is the angle the projector lens aims when the body is mounted flat. A low offset will have the PJ shooting with the bottom (or top) of the picture inline with the lens, i.e. straight across. That is good for a low ceiling or a standard coffee table mounting.
A high offset will cause more of a shift down (for a ceiling mount). That shift in inches increases drastically as the projector is moved further back, which is often done to increase the size of the picture. You can try to accomidate a high offset by tilting the projector, but the more you tilt the greater the keystone.
I've heard the InFocus changed the offset on their projectors because "high end" rooms often have a 10 foot ceiling versus a standard 8 foot ceiling.
The net of it is based on all that geometry, a 4805 worked really well in my room and an X10 just won't.

The manual is the same for X10,IN80,IN81,IN82 and IN83. You can download the manual from Infocus website.
If you are buying the X10 you will get the IN82 manual.

Mitch P. 04-02-09, 11:45 AM wow, talk about seeing this post too late! Grrrrr, at that price it is a steal for sure. I have an IN76 and am happy, but am waiting to jump to 1080p and this would have done that. Can't wait to read about the results. Dang I knew I should have been browsing AVS more often...

Not too late - units are evidently still available at TD. It's too late for the $200 rebate, but even without it it's still a great price. :)

Thanks Jeff. I need to go back and figure out the offset calculations to be sure this pj will work. I did it once before, I just need to go and find it again. I'm using an IN76 now on a 123" Firehawk. I probably have another 10" to be able to raise it, but not much to be able to move it back if I had to. I love my IN76 BTW, so the main thing for me is to get to 1080p as I'm sitting about 13' away.
Bruce Wayne 04-02-09, 12:35 PM Are the black levels as good as the IN72? or maybe a bit better?

Hi Mitch - if you don't have much room to move the PJ back, you may be out of luck unfortunately. The throw of the X10 is significantly longer than the IN76.
Although the offset is not ideal, it's workable (you can tilt your screen, tilt the PJ and use edge masking to hide keystone distortion, etc). I think most people who say it won't work for them can probably get it to work if they try. I have a 112" screen in a room with 7.5' ceilings, and I'll make it work.
Throw range is a different story though. If you don't have enough room, you don' t have enough room. I have to move my mount back around 2' to accomodate the longer throw of the X10.

I think you're right :( I just looked at the pj projection calculator on Infocus's site and it says minimum throw distance of 16'7" for a 123" screen, and an offset of 24". I'll have to confirm at home, but I do not think this will work in my situation. Oh well, the IN76 is working just fine and I cannot see SDE at my distance almost at all anyways.

13% off on E-bay but no rebate.
8 units left
about 1170
Mitch P. 04-02-09, 01:40 PM Definitely won't work for me as my throw distance is limited to right around 15', and vertical offset limited to around 7". Bummer.

Tilt projector up and screen top forward 3° that will give you 10.5" so you will be arount the 14" mark at 200" throw 16'8

Have a first surface mirror on the back wall and shine the projector at it this will give you an additional distance.

It's an electric screen. LOL at the mirror :)
DvdJags 04-03-09, 12:25 AM I sure hope Infoucs extends the rebate. I may have to pass on the HC6500 from Mitsubishi for the X10. I wonder how the X10 would compare to the HC6500 in terms of shrapness.

Or you could use the vertical lens shift. I got my X10 on Wednesday and after working way too hard to get it mounted to the perfect height, I started playing with the menus. Under the Picture menu, there is an "Image Shift" option. You can move the picture up or down several inches with that. Look at page 20 of the manual (somebody posted the link above).

The image shift would only work with aspect ratio of films that are not full screen ratios. So if you are watching a 2:35 :1 ratio film with black bars on top and bottom you can shift the image up or down. if you shift down you may not see the subtitles (if you need them)
For normal 16:9 material if you use image shift, the image will get truncated from top or bottom.

So the image shift cuts out a chunk of the picture? I guess I assumed it was shooting it onto my wall and I just couldn't see it. Never mind.
Digital image shift is great for masking 2.35:1 films. As anirbana mentioned, you can move the image within the 16:9 frame. Just move the 2.35:1 image to the bottom (or top) of your screen, mask off the single black bar with felt, (or whatever masking material you want), and instant masking system on the cheap. :D
Digital image shift is not to be confused with optical lens shift, which allows you to move the entire image on your wall without introducing keystone distortion.
Projectors with mediocre black levels benefit greatly by letterbox masking. I use it with my IN76 and could never go back to not masking. Give it a shot.
hybris1 04-03-09, 11:40 AM I am mounting my X10 tonight. As with my 4805, I will be mounting in the adjacent closet and project through a hole. This is how I have done it with all my projectors. I like not hearing or feeling the heat from the projector. It also gives me as much throw as I need. I actually didn't get a IN7x series because it had too short of a throw. As far as offset, it seems to have about 6 inches more than my 4805. Is everyone wanting their screen a few feet off the floor because it seems that mine will still be a foot and a half or so from the floor. I can go up (9' ceilings) but I will have to cut a higher hole in the wall.
anirbana 04-03-09, 11:50 AM Guys, can I request people who have purchased the X10 already to post to the X10 owners thread and leave the offer related post here?
We all will benefit form owner contributions
Given I purchased the X10 from Tiger Direct before March 31st, does this mean I qualify for a rebate from Infocus?

Any new rebate?
spectrumbx 04-04-09, 08:25 PM Ordered one.
Had to pay taxes and everything. Grrr....
With no rebate, taxes, and higher shipping, I am paying close to $340 over the best deal posted here. :(
Oh well... that's life...
plplplpl 04-05-09, 03:05 AM I missed it, too.
Any chance InFocus will offer another rebate? If so, where would it be posted?

Taking a clue from previous Infocus clearances, I doubt it.
That said, I would expect the street value for this PJ to still be below $1500 after this closeout.
So, we might see these prices again if MS's cash back for eBay goes higher then.
Wasn't the x10 released last year around Mar? If so, and they are closing it out, then its very short lived product. Or does Infocus have another 1080p projector under their sleeves?
spectrumbx 04-05-09, 09:37 PM I suspect they are trying to position the IN81 as the new value PJ while slashing prices on the whole line.
Plus, naming wise, the X10 is poorly positioned.
The X9 and X10 are very different, which confuses many.
finnloag 04-06-09, 02:19 PM spectrumbx, Any chance of editing the Thread title to "Infocus X10 for $1800... make that $1299" as I think many people would be interested in the TD pricing. Infocus appears to be aggressively going after share (or are they just dumping inventory). Checking the throw for the PJ, it definitely looks like a drop-in replacement for the 4805 (with a greater vertical offset). As a long "long throw" guy, this is the first low priced DLP I've seen that could be mounted in the same place as my current system (XGA business class projector). If I hadn't bought something 6 months ago, this one may have gotten gotten me to jump to 1080p.

However, it looks like we might need a mod to change the main thread title.
mikeloxlong 04-27-09, 01:05 PM any more rebates for these? Looking to score one of these to replace my recently sold HD70
sumitagarwal 05-04-09, 12:14 PM Did anyone end up buying the X10 only to find that it doesn't really work for their room/setup?
If so, I'd happily pay $900 for a lightly used one =)
