View Full Version : native resolution through HDMI for samsung LN32A450

So I just got this TV to replace a dying 32" in my bedroom. Manuals says the native resolution is 1366x768, however the closest resolution the manual states it will take is 1360x768. Not sure why the 6 pixel difference...

However, I can't get it take 1360x768 through HDMI (using nvidia 6200LE) - the manual says it will take that resolution through HDMI, but I haven't gotten it to work even with a custom modeline or specifying different a metamode... It works without a hitch over VGA, but I've found the quality of the VGA connection (especially the colors) to be extremely lacking... Plus it doesn't provide as much control over the picture quality via VGA.

I have no problems giving it 720p or 1080i through the HDMI and it actually looks great (much better than VGA @1360x768 - and 720p/1080i are what my direcTV STB is outputting to it and it looks great) so I'll be fine if I don't get this figured out, but i thought I'd give it a shot.

This is cross-posted in the official Samsung LNXX450 thread as well... but I'm gonna guess not too many linux users over there...

Personally, I think you're better off having the tv doing the video scaling (i.e., sending it 720p or 1080i). The only reason you would want to go with native res would be for desktop clarity. Are you surfing the web much on it or just basically watching tv, vids, and stuff? Even so, hitting "zoom" a couple of times in firefox would make it more clear.

I do use it as a desktop (a few times a week) but the primary driver here is that I really wanted to see the difference (or see if I can see the difference) in the picture. more a curiousity and "I should be able to do this, so how do I this" tinkering addiction that I have.

I see. Post your xorg.conf, and I'll see if anything jumps out at me. I was tinkering with modeline calcs earlier, but haven't generated anything acceptable yet.

Thanks for the help. Below are the relevant sections. Note the modelines and other things I tried are commented out now, and the metamode won't validate and gets removed, according to the log. I can get 1360x768 via VGA, just not HDMI.

OK, I'll have time tomorrow to dig into it. That TV has some pretty specific timings for that video mode, so I think the trick is going to be calculating the proper modeline. Also, you'll want to uncomment the "UseEDID" "false" line, since it's obviously not working. May need some other options, too.

Is that DVI-to-HDMI or straight HDMI cable?

Thanks - yeah - I'll uncomment that when trying other things. It is a DVI-HDMI cable. Also, previous post should so I can get 1360x768 via VGA - it previously said "can't". No special modeline needed - in that case I'm guessing EDID works or at least works better... Too bad the image is of such poor quality via VGA. My previous TV was indistinguishable between VGA and HDMI, as is my other HDTV. But all these sets process different types of signals differently...

Try using your modelines again after adding Options “ExactModeTimingsDVI” “True”beneath the EDID line.

This is why I asked about the cable, but I think it works w/ hdmi also.

Someone posted a link in another thread which you should read, also. Good instructions about determining which modes (if any) are being validated by the driver from EDID --> http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1003099&page=2

I'll keep trying to generate a modeline with acceptable values just in case that's the problem.

Edit: I forgot about this one, too:
Option "FlatPanelProperties" "Scaling = Native"

I'll give that a shot when I get a chance and no one is using that display over the next couple of days.

I looked up that option and I think thay may be the trick I need. that link is an interesting read and it will be interesting to see what the TV is reporting specifically.

thanks for your help

*sigh* - no go display said the signal wasn't supported. Works in VGA though... Oh well, maybe I'll use that ubuntu thread to troubleshoot it in more detail over the weekend.

I haven't had a chance to work with the modeline. All the info you need is in the specs...I just haven't been able to get one in range yet.

You should ask at nvnews, too -- more people over there better at this than me. Give them the specs, too:

Res: 1360x768
H: 47.712
V: 60.015
Pixel: 85.5
H/V: +/+

good luck

hello, newlinux
I am having the same problem with my Samsung LE32 and HDMI..
did you manage to solve this somehow?
I am googling for a few days now, but none of the proposed solutions work for me..

Nope I never got it working... I just ended up with 720p and left it at that. Still looks great, and I don't frequently use it as a desktop.
