View Full Version : Russian Blu-Ray - How can I get them in the US?
crazybee 02-22-09, 02:50 PM There are numerous Russian Blu-Ray discs I would like to order, but I cannot find any English-friendly sites that sell them, nevermind that they probably don't even ship to the US. Has anyone had experience getting Russian Blu-Rays? The Canadian-based site where I used to buy Russian DVDs is no longer around...
This is the site that has what I want:
http://era-hd.ru/
Any help would be hugely appreciated!

Try the google translator for individual sentences on the site.
Indeed i just used the translator and it did quite well for the top part text on the page it reads when translated as....
Welcome! We welcome you to our online store. You can buy a license only Blu-ray movies, cartoons, disc format Blu-ray with the music, documentaries and sports programs. We specialize only in the media a new generation at the site represented the most complete range of Blu-ray discs with the Russian path, as well as the original media without the transfer, either with a separate carrier.
Thats how i bought off of the German and French Amazon sites.

Almost all of these Blu-rays are US movies. Do you want them for Russian subtitles, dubbing or are you looking for Russian movies. It appers that there are very few.

Going by the exchange rate the average price not including shipping is also about $34.99 dollars but maybe they sell a few special editions or movies not yet out here in the UK or America. I wonder what censorship if any russian versions have ?

I would also be wary of pirate releases. They produce a lot them in Russia, especially if price seems too good to be true, it almost certainly is.

Same is true of China but that site looks pretty legit and anyways if it isn't legit you buy once and then hopefully find out and then never buy again. Anyways price is not that cheap on that site which suggests it's not a pirate site.
There is probably info out there on this site it's just a matter of checking on Google and doing the research.

I am specifically looking for Russian films on Blu-Ray, of which there are 4 or 5 on the site that I am interested in acquiring, most notably The Admiral (starring Konstantin Kabensky from Night/Day Watch, the disc has DTS-HD 7.1 and English subs to boot) and Inhabited Island: Part 1 (no subs on this, but the Sci-Fi visuals alone are worthy of a purchase).
sayitisntsony 02-22-09, 04:57 PM Based on the near VHS quality of many of the Russian DVDs my wife buys from Russian web sites I would be wary of what you might get for your $$.
crazybee 02-22-09, 06:21 PM Perhaps those are bootlegs?
The Russian DVDs I have gotten in the past are 100% legit, and not only that, but the quality is fine and dandy.
sayitisntsony 02-22-09, 06:28 PM We have about 60 Russian made DVDs. I am sure a handful are boots, but most have the proper seals. The quality of many are very good but some, even studio releases, are not at a 'western' standard. Some of those my wife buys while in Russia can be the worst. The best quality we have had has come from russiandvd.com - but they are not doing blu ray yet. The site can be viewed in English.
DrCrawn 02-22-09, 09:13 PM There were some Russian HD DVDs that people have been trying to import for a long time. I've heard it may even be illegal to export the stuff from Russia. I mean, look what has happened to that country...
Wish you guys luck on getting BDs.
You can own them as Night Watch and Day Watch BD.
I have The Admiral (on blu-ray) and the Inhabited Island: Part 1 on dvd. Both are pretty good movies. The island is based on the novel written by a Russian author and they say the book is much much better. The quality of the Admiral blu-ray is good (but again the movie is based on the Russian history). I would highly recommend the new Russian movie Stilyagi that just came out on blu-ray. It is kind of a musical where they took famous songs of different Russian bands from different years and used them in the movie. I really liked it. Those who is familiar with Russian life somewhat will probably like it. As for where to buy: ozon.ru is like American Amazon.com. They have lots of stuff and are reliable (at least for shipping within Russia). Shipping internationally would cost quite a bit though, I am afraid.

sayitisntsony 03-02-09, 04:24 PM poiv3 - does 'Inhabited Island' have English subs? My wife is Russian but I need subtitles, looks like it could be a good film for us.

I am not 100% sure, but it seems it does not have any subtitles.
