I have the MX-450 and I have to say so far so good! Programming is proving to be pretty easy. I haven't done anything too complicated yet like setting up Macros but overall I'm pretty happy with it.

To control my Anthem D2 processor I am using an RS232 interface I found here.. http://www.industrologic.com/ir2prod.htm This is a $79 IR to RS232 adapter. Originally I thought I would have to buy the MSC400 which is about $600 so I was glad to find this little device! It works perfectly and if I can program it, anyone can. It's pretty easy, you just type in a 12 bit Sony SIRC code and match it to a serial command and then when it sees that Sony code it sends the command. Then you just use the MX-450 learn feature to learn that Sony code for the appropriate button. Couldn't be simpler!

So if anyone is looking for a good low cost solution to control an RS232 device with an IR remote, this little IR232 device seems to be a good solution. There are a lot of other cool things on the Industrologic web site so I'll have to see what else there is that might be of some use.

I'm not sure about other RS232 controlled devices but the Anthem D2 can help reduce the need to use macros on the MX-450. The D2 RS232 port can accept multiple commands so you can set up a sequence of commands to be sent based on one Sony code. If this is typical of RS232 control then it really seems like the way to go if your device has the capability.
