View Full Version : ? LINUX 24Hz 24fps playback ?
saptecai 02-24-09, 07:27 PM In LINUX, what graphics card can do 24Hz (24fps) at 1920x1080p ?
I recently bought a plasma screen which allegedly supports 24fps input with 4:4 pulldown. I currently have a ATI 7500 and in XP with Powerstrip did not help in getting 24Hz out of it. I need a new graphics card and LINUX compatibility would be a bonus.
Thanks
I don't think you can do 24Hz in Windows, so I don't think its possible in Linux, either, due to limitations of PC video cards, not the OS per se. But I could be misinformed.
Wy not just do 24 x 3 = 72Hz and feed that via VGA to your plasma, or DVI/HDMI.
If your plasma won't take 72Hz, perhaps 48Hz?
mythmaster 02-24-09, 09:31 PM I'm not 100% on this, but I think that's where "Inverse Telecine" comes in which is supported by nvidia's VDPAU (and, subsequently, xbmc-vdpau).
saptecai 02-25-09, 10:06 AM I am pretty sure 24Hz is available in Windows.
Anyone has got this in LINUX?
I never understood why anyone would want to use 24Hz.
Film projectors at theaters (those still using film) project the 24fps film at 48fps, showing each frame twice.
Why wouldn't you want to do the same at home, if the goal is to replicate the commercial cinema experience?
Using any multiple of 24 should be acceptable, as the goal is to elimate the 3:2 cadence judder, not frame rate issues per se.
mythmaster 02-25-09, 10:54 AM Yep, you want inverse telecine --> http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?p=287293
I've got an NVIDIA 9500GT w/ 512MB RAM.
I'm running the latest NVIDIA proprietary driver (180.29).
When I run nvidia-settings and choose 1920x1080 resolution for my Pioneer PRO-151FD, I get a choice of 60Hz or 24Hz sync frequency.

Note that the latest stable driver is now 180.35. ;)

I know my Panasonic PZ85B accepts 24Hz input and does 4:4 pulldown so displays each frame 4 times. This is meant for Blu-Ray players (most new one apparently do 24Hz and many film content is at 24fps).
You are right. It may work if my video card does 48, 72, 96 but my current card (ATI Radeon 7500) doesn't and i would like to buy a new one that works at 24Hz like a Blu-Ray player. The pulldown etc will be done inside the PZ85B.
To mythmater
My aim is to avoid inverse telecine because is uses 3:2 (or maybe 2:3) pulldown and blank frames which produce flicker/jadder. Since my plasma displays 24Hz input at 96Hz I would rather stick with 4:4 pulldown rather than 24Hz to 60Hz inverse telecine solution.

Is that in LINUX or Windows?
That's a great plasma you have there. Have you used it on 24Hz? Is it nice?
Thanks guys

That's running Linux, Ubuntu 8.10.
Yeah, I love the 151, it's amazing! I've only had it for a bit more than a week. I've used it at 24Hz for some Blu Ray content, i.e., BBC Planet Earth, sourced from by Blu Ray player. I've not tried 24Hz under Linux.
And, so far, I've not even considered attempting Blu Ray playback under Linux. Though it works great for standard DVD playback.

I just played a clip from a "Speed Racer" blu ray rip (1080p h.264 5.1) in xbmc-vdpau and it was smooth and gorgeous, especially with some noise reduction added to smooth out walls, etc. in the background.
saptecai 02-25-09, 02:27 PM Mark,
Excellent. What model / make of 9500GT do you have? Is it passively cooled?
Let us know how it works in 24Hz on your plasma.
Also Mythmaster,
Do you rip in Windows and play in LINUX or is there a solution now for LINUX.
Cheers

This is the card I have:

I paid $69.99, and I'm very pleased w/ the performance.
