View Full Version : Benq W5000 or Epson 6100 - Which One?
tally999 02-25-09, 10:33 PM My screen is a 106" DIY Cream and Sugar mix with a DIY electric masking system and a velvet border. First row seating is at 9' and 2nd row seating is at 15'. My room is a combination game room / theater. There will be some ambient light but I also have the ability to darken the room when needed. The projector needs to be mounted at 15'. The theater section will be used for mainly movies. I will have another tv (about a 50") by the gaming area for game/tv use. My screen is mounted approximately 6" from the cieling. Both of these projectors seem to work for my situation. I have spent hours reading about both. I do like the price of Benq W5000 refurb deal and the crisp DLP image yet the Epson 6100 seems to have a higher light output for my theater / game room. Which one to buy?

With the price of the refurb W5000 it seems like a no brainer to me. Keep in mind the 6100 uses organic panels. I would get the W5000 for sure.
limulus 02-26-09, 07:28 PM I would have to agree. Buy the refurb BenQ, that is a steal. I've had a BenQ7800 for 4.5yrs and it has been a very good machine and it cost a lot more. I have a new W5000 coming to replace it. One question:
Are you and your potential guests not affected by RBE?
Fragster 02-26-09, 07:42 PM BenQ hands down.......better blacks and the BenQ is one of the sharpest 1080 PJ's around and being DLP, it would have more 3D pop than the LCD based 6100. Not to mention what MJG said above about organic panels.
rickster904 02-26-09, 08:53 PM What they said. Benq.
kirtis_mcleskey 02-26-09, 09:32 PM I posted a thread a week or so ago about getting this benq , or actually its whats omeone recommened to me, and I emailed them and was asking more info about the warranty ect and I never got a response,
maybe they lost the email or something , Ill try one more time
BlackBourne 02-26-09, 10:14 PM where can I find this deal on the BenQ refurb, how much is it?
kirtis_mcleskey 02-26-09, 10:46 PM I just tried to go to the site whre I looked at it , or the link I mean and it woulndt work

Wow - such an overwhelming response for the W5000. Thanks for the input. I am really not sure about the RBE. I have never owned a projector or a DLP TV. I guess I am willing to take the risk. The unit sounds like a great option for me.

A response to this question was posted in one of the threads. The warranty is for one year. I also responded to this and suggested getting an extended warranty for the projector and lamp. You would still have a lot less in the projector than a new one and yet your warranty (5 years) would be 2.5 times longer than a new one. You would also have a 3 year lamp warranty.

Go to any store that sells TV's and view a DLP. I am willing to bet that if you could see RBE you would already know it because it is hard for a guy not to look at TV's when around them.:)
kirtis_mcleskey 02-27-09, 12:05 AM oh mjg , i overlooked your post , my bad
thanks for the info
i see that but i mean , its kinda bad when i never got an email back from them , i wanted to hear that info from them as well,
thats cheap for that projector, but still a lot of money to me
BlackBourne 02-27-09, 01:15 AM This is all new to me, why id the Benq w5000 getting a better reception than the Epson 6100? I was deadset on getting that but this thread is making me think otherwise. What is the big draw? Also, does anyone have any links where they are selling refurbished unit for the Benq W500, please post then so we can compare prices.

Links like this are a no-no. I could be wrong, but I believe there was already a thread about this deal that went the way of the dinosaurs for just this reason. As far as why people rave about the W5000: it has excellent contrast and black levels + razor sharp optics. And I do mean super sharp! When I watched one a few weeks ago it had that whole reach out and touch the images on the screen look to it.
If I had known this deal was coming back when you were asking for recommendations in your other thread I would have suggested putting this one at the top of your short list. I do know you're a gamer though, so you should do a search for a member here named peteer01 and read through his thread on display lag of projectors and gaming. I don't know how hardcore of a gamer you are so this may or may not concern you. For everything else though this is probably the best deal going right now.
Out of curiosity, does anyone know if the refurbs are shipping with the latest firmware? I would assume so but we all know about making assumptions. ;) I asked in another thread and have yet to get a response.
BlackBourne 02-27-09, 04:51 AM Seems the refurb is sold out. I hope this deal come back.

mannoiaj 02-28-09, 08:14 AM yep.. sold out. Darn, it was in my que of things to buy too
limulus 02-28-09, 11:47 AM I just looked at the BenQ site and yes, the W5000 has been removed from the refurb section. The last date for the next refurb release was March 6, so I guess all those have been sold in advance.
Is this gone for good or is the expectation that it will reappear once more stock comes in?
gwlaw99 02-28-09, 01:48 PM Ive seen it taken off and then go back on in the last month.
eightninesuited 02-28-09, 02:44 PM I don't think this is even a debate, the W5000 would kill the 6100 in a side by side comparison.
It's a better match to the 6500. And if the 1080UB is anything to go by, for color accuracy, I still give it to the W5000.
skor,
The refurb w5000 units will reappear again at a later time.
Fragster 02-28-09, 03:42 PM BenQ5000 is a older PJ while the 6100 is a newer PJ so obviously the 6100 would have more marketing/public hype and hence be the better known PJ than the older BenQ.
This is like comparing a 2007 Lexus sedan to a 2009 Chevy sedan.
Hmm...this reminds me of "DaGamePimps" thread about "older higher end PJ's are better than newer entry level 720p Pjs";)
