View Full Version : 6500UB Problems
twsnnva 02-25-09, 11:13 PM I received my PJ today and hooked it up to find a fist sized blue spot in the upper left corner. It's more obvious on dark scenes. As best I can tell, it's a dust blob, but since I've never seen one in person, I really can't say. I tried capturing it in a picture but couldn't. The spot looks like a near perfect circle, is it normal for dust blobs to manifest themselves this way? It moves with lens shift so it has to be something with the PJ itself. I tried cleaning the lens with a microfiber cloth but it didn't help.
Another issue I am having is when I change the input on my receiver, the PJ freaks out and displays colorful horizontal lines, I'd guess about 2px tall, all the way down the screen. After switching inputs back and forth a few times it clears up. My TV nor my previous PJ does this, so it has to be something with the Epson.
I think I'll use it like it is for now and let Epson get caught up with their warranty replacements - I hear they're backlogged. I will say that I did not see any focus issue with mine. I set it up and played through Street Fighter 4 and checked again afterwords and it was still perfect. I really love the image it throws, apart from the blue spot it's definitely a few steps up from the HD70. I wasn't expecting it to be so big though. Dimensions were never something I gave much thought to. I expected it to be about the same size as my HD70... HA.

Jason Turk 02-26-09, 09:55 AM Sounds like a dust blob, although I have heard very few instances of this with the Epsons. Not sure on the horizontal lines...
xxjoexx 02-26-09, 10:12 AM just curious...are you having any noise issues...im trying to determine if mine is extra noisy or that is just how the fan sounds...

Are you hearing the fan or the iris? The iris sounds like a coffee pot churnning (although more quiet)?
twsnnva 02-26-09, 10:32 AM Jason,
Thanks for the reply. I assume whatever it is found it's way into the PJ while on the assembly line. I think I can get a picture of the lines, I'll try tonight. The menu shows fine when this happens, so it's something to do with the signal only.
Joe,
I saw your post in the owners thread and I'm sorry to hear that you too may be having issues. In Living Room mode, the fans are pretty loud, about the same as my HD70 in bright mode. In the Theater modes, it's barely audible. The PJ is literally a foot above and behind my head. I will say that I wasn't paying much attention to noises, I was more concerned with the blue spot and the lines. I'm going to attempt to get a pic of the lines tonight and I will make it a point to listen more closely and report back.

xxjoexx 02-26-09, 10:43 AM its not the iris... the iris noise is much quieter on the 6500 than the 6100 i had... it is a constant drone, it has to do with the fan i think.... even if i turn the iris off or just project a static image i hear it... it is just the noise created by the projector being on... when there is no dialouge you can really hear the projector running and i have it on low lamp

Could be a problem, but then it is nearly impossible to know without hearing it in person.

If you're using HDMI the lines could be caused by an HDCP handshake issue. Are you running the sources through a receiver? If so I would bypass that and run both sources directly to the projector.

Maybe it isnt a problem, it just i never noticed it on the other projector... maybe it was because the iris was louder on the old one, all i heard was that... actually it isnt as loud when im standing next to it... it seems louder in my seating position... im going to try and mount it higher (i have it on a shelf unit i can make higher).... maybe im just being overly critical... i called epson and they are still on backorder for replacement units... ill give it a week or so, if it still bothers me ill send it back... can i still fill out the rebate form now if i may get a replacement unit from them in a week or two???
TF Ghost 02-26-09, 01:02 PM Yes, you can fill out the rebate paperwork. If you do the swap through Epson they'll have it on record that you received a defective projector, which shouldn't impact your rebate.

Ghost,
Thanks so much for the input. I was thinking this, but I did not expect an HDCP handshake issue to show up this way. I figured if the handshake failed I'd get nothing. After doing some googling, I see that sometimes this issue shows up in various ways. I see "colorful snow" used as a description a lot, and I could describe what I'm seeing similar to that. I suppose this leaves me with some decisions to make. With the dust blob, I'm sure I could return for a replacement to Projector People, but they gave me a great deal so I didn't want to take more money out of their pockets, which is why I was just going to have Epson replace it in a month or so. However, if this is indeed a HDCP handshake problem I may simply return it for a refund. I can take the receiver out to test the theory, but bypassing it isn't a solution I'm willing to live with, nor is flipping inputs back and forth until it syncs. If I were using cheap equipment it would be one thing, but we're talking about a PS3, a $1500 receiver and a $3000 projector and it happens too frequently to ignore. Lamp hours still show 0 and it's occurred 3 times.
What seems so odd is that my TV, which is also an HDCP compliant device, is connected identically, to the other HDMI output on the receiver and I have never had any issues.
Does anyone have any suggestions? My setup is:
PS3, HTPC, STB to Onkyo TX-SR876 via HDMI. Onkyo to 6500UB and Mitsubishi WD-73735 via HDMI.

twsnnva 02-26-09, 09:56 PM I was able to capture a picture of the pretty, psychedelic lines. I'm still honing my AV photography skills, but it's easy to make out what's going on. Oddly, the issue did not happen as often tonight. I switched between my STB, PS3 and HTPC around 30 times until it happened. This time it actually happened not while changing inputs, but when closing PowerDVD on my HTPC. When I finally got it to happen I was able to resolve it by changing the HDMI input on the projector from 1 to 2 back to 1. I'm wondering, if this is consistent behavior if I can somehow configure my harmony to automatically do this.
I'll also note that I am seeing the focus problem tonight. After only 15 minutes of use it was EXTREMELY obvious that the focus was off. I was aware of this possibility when I purchased, so no biggie. Hopefully Epson has a fix soon (do they already?) and when I get the replacement for the dust blob I'll get one that does not have the focus issue either.
Finally, Joe, I listened very closely to the projector tonight and will say it is VERY quiet. I got the opinion of my fiancee and she agrees. I turned the AC and all of the fans in the house off to make it as quiet as possible and with the projector around a foot from my head and I can just barely hear it in Theater Black 2 mode. To give you an idea, I built my HTPC with noise in mind, using some of the quietest fans available and it's louder than the PJ from 10' away.

twsnnva - is your PJ ceiling or shelf mounted? The reason I ask is because people have reported noise problems when their epson is inverted.
twsnnva 02-27-09, 12:02 AM I've spent the last hour connecting and disconnecting my sources directly to my PJ and I cannot reproduce the problem. I also tried reproducing the issue with my HTPC and PowerDVD as I did in my last post, but could not. I think it's safe to say that it only happens with the receiver inline. After some more testing with the receiver inline, I believe I have determined that I can consistently recover from the handshake issue (assuming that's what it is) by changing from input 1 to 2 and back to 1 on the Epson itself. I need to watch a few movies all the way through to make sure the PJ doesn't randomly break drop the feed. If it works ok I think I'll keep the Epson.
3pwood,
Mine is shelf mounted. After seeing your message I flipped it over and it did not seem any louder to me. It may in fact be louder when hanging from a mount, but I can't test this. I was planning on putting it up on the same mount where my HD70 was but it was too heavy for the mount and would not stay angled correctly.

xxjoexx 02-27-09, 12:15 AM i put my shelf up higher and it seems to have helped with the noise... epson doesnt have any replacements in stock so ill see how it goes for a week, then decide if i want to try a replacement...
also does a lot of light come out the front vent of yours?? the amount that is coming out if mine seems excessive...
silver700 02-27-09, 12:54 AM twsnnva, i am currently testing the 7500ub(going to order the hd750 from avs though nex week)at my home and I had the exact problem with my 7500ub that you do when it comes to the horizontal lines. It has happened about 4 time since I've had the pj. I've had it about 3 weeks. The only thing that I can notice that is the same when it happens is when I turn on my ps3 or turning off the ps3.
rwestley 02-27-09, 06:41 AM The problem sounds like some kind of HDCP handshake issue. Many have reported that the handshake is very slow on the 7500/6500. I was told by Epson that it has something to do with the Reon upscailing chip. It might be that the horizontal lines were caused by the handshake process. This seems to be confirmed by Silver who had a similar issue with the Ps3.

I also get the psyco lines. It's not often but happens when switching sources.
I have another anomaly that I think is related. When I play games on the PS3, sometimes when a scene changes in the game the screen goes blank. I can reproduce this on "Buzz" and "Fear2". It only does it on the 6500. On a HDMI tv it's fine. If I pause the game (screen black) and I toggle the projector's inputs from HDMI 1 to pc and back the image returns.
I wonder if anyone has experienced simular issues
mcsortan 03-25-09, 09:04 AM Anyone had problems running the XBox 360 at 1080P via HDMI to the 6500UB.
I seem unable to run ANYTHING except 1080i, 60hz.
Blu-Ray works perfectly at 1080P.
Any thoughts?
steinfoot 03-25-09, 02:16 PM I too have just developed a faint blue blob that I can only see on dark scenes. If this is a dust blob, is there anyway for me to remove it myself?
I dont see it most of the time, so Im waiting to exchange it to see if any more problems pop up.
MiniMeRacing 03-25-09, 02:34 PM I too was having problems until I changed the $3.00 25' POS HDMI cable that the projector guys sent with my 6500 to a Sonic Wave high speed 22g HDMI and now everything works on 1080p and looks tremendous!!
twsnnva 03-25-09, 02:53 PM You would have to disassemble the projector to remove the dust.
I finally got around to calling Epson for a replacement since the focus and handshake issues seem to have been resolved and they tell me they have no replacements in stock and have no idea when a replacement will be available.

baah ok. good thing it isnt too distracting. I will just live with it till epson works some of the kinks out.
thanks
twsnnva 03-31-09, 07:11 PM Argh... I received the replacement PJ from Epson yesterday, and this unit is worse than the first one. Obviously, there is no dust blob, but the handshake issue persists. Not only that, but the convergence is terrible. The center is near perfect, but it progressively goes out alignment the further it gets from the center. In the four corners, green is off left by 3-4px and red is off right by about 2px. It's clearly visible from viewing distance, manifesting itself as poor focus. The other issue I'm having is a green line, about 2 inches wide down the right side. I haven't seen this one mentioned before, and it only seems to happen when viewing SD content. Just got off the phone with Epson and the 3rd PJ is on it's way.

I believe the green line problem was one of the specific fixes with firmware 1.08. But I would have thought that the replacements being shipped out now should all have the latest FW. You should check to see if you still have FW 1.05 and ask that you get a 1.08 with your next replacement.

I just got my replacement and it had 1.07. Other than the green line problem it is perfect. I will wait for the FI update to get the firmware installed. The first unit I got was 1.05 firmware, had the defocusing problem, a high pitch whine that came in cycles and the convergence was worse. This one seems to be a keeper, I hope.
tractng 04-13-09, 04:02 AM I am getting the dust blob. I posted on the other threads. It is a blueish circle about 2 inches.
Only has about 60 hours on the projector? Visible at dark seens or during SD to HD switches.
Did epson ask lots of questions before doing the exchange?

No, they didn't. I explained what I was seeing and they set me up with a replacement. Their support really is outstanding. Unfortunately they seem to be having some QC issues, which in turn is causing some supply issues. Be prepared to wait up to a month for the "overnight" replacement.

Does the shipment from Fedex required a signature?
I just called them and the experience is great!!

I honestly don't know. I had mine shipped to my place of business so it would have been signed for by receiving. Did they tell you how long you would be waiting for the replacement? I have been waiting for my second replacement for almost two weeks.

They told me I am number 5 in line. If I don't see anything next week, then call them back.
I asked them to send me a notification once they shipped and they say there is no way of doing it :(.
Is the replacement package consists of the same parts of the original package? How do I tell if it is brand new vs. refurb?
Btw, is the package the same size as the original? I am thinking of building a box for the front porch so they can just drop it in and lock it. We buy lots of online stuff and I am afraid one day it might not show up .
