View Full Version : Rundown
BluDevil 02-26-09, 08:23 AM Universal is, for me, just about the most consistant and high quality studio in transferring catalog titles: case in point, The Rundown. I watched this last night (had to get for the wife) and had not seen it since it was on HD-DVD. Well, ladies and gentleman, I don't know what else I could ask for. I realize that the film isn't "old", but all I could say was WOW! Solid throughout. Great detail, wide establishing shots of Brazil (Hawaii) were spot on, deep blacks, and to me, just a great representation of what all transfers of this genre and filmstock should aspire towards. The real surprise for me, however, was the immersive soundtrack. DTS Master Audio is an enormous step up from the previous HD release. For its very deep bass, we feel it as The Rock walks towards a nightclub about 2 minutes in, to an absoulutly immersive surround experiance evident througout the sequences in the jungle. Top notch. I reccommend it highly. Anyone else have this? Or am I seeing and hearing things?
Deviation 02-26-09, 04:47 PM This one doesn't seem to be at retail for some reason. I got my copy from Amazon just recently and, like you, I was impressed by the audio and video on this release.
joey791 02-26-09, 06:15 PM I bought the Rock 3 pack(Rundown,Doom,Scorpion King) preorder from Amazon for 45 bucks but havent had a chance to watch Rundown yet.
Roger That 02-26-09, 11:10 PM This is great to hear. I'm awaiting my copy, and have always really enjoyed this movie. Action packed, hilarious, Walken. Tough to go wrong. :) I've become a strangely big fan of Peter Berg-directed stuff, as well.
I'm happy to hear that replacing my SD DVD copy will be worth it.
Very good picture quality, great sound, and classic Christopher Walken. This was a fun film. Not Academy Award material, so "serious" movie viewers beware.
Great fight scene with the rebels swinging from vines.

I have the international version from Sony Pictures. It's presented on a BD-50 with DTHD sountrack.
I agree the video is good, but I wouldn't say totaly untouched. By the caps I have looked at, neither is this Universal Pictures version. In fact the Sony version seems to be a little bit better.
The grain pattern doesn't seem to follow the best unfiltered discs, so I wouldn't call it reference. The audio on the other hand, is incredible.
raoul_duke 02-27-09, 03:49 PM I have all three movies in the Rock 3 pack on HD DVD, I don't think I can actually be arsed replacing them.

Unfortunately, he hasn't made a real action movie like this in some time now. He keeps making a lot of crap family comedies.

So you think the UK version betters the domestic Universal version in picture quality? That is good to know for future reference.

Hi Phantom
yes it does, BUT the UK version is not recommended since it's cut.
If you're interested on this movie, you should get either the Latin America/Southeast Asia discs (which are the same and pressed in the US) or the non-UK european version.
I rather have the Latin America/Southeast Asia disc since it doesn't feature european rating logos, it looks exaclty like an US Sony BD release, it even says 'made in USA' as I mentioned.
I have compared tons of other international releases with american discs, there's plenty of interesting stuff people don't usually know.
For example lot's of FOX international discs feature different encodings, some with higher bitrates (The Devil Wears Prada, What Happens In Vegas), some with lower (Jumper, Street Kings) compared to the US version.
BTW the disc label on international FOX, Universal and Warner discs are much better looking and feature better printing quality than the US version (they are usually pressed in Austria). Japanese discs are even better.
The Brazilian version of 1408 is the only one in the world to feature the theatical cut, and from what I know, the only one that is free of the stair-stepping/jaggies problem.
The Latin America/European/Southeast Asia (minus UK) and Japanese version of 10,000 BC are on a BD-50 with more extras than the US version.
There are lots of others examples and releases that are not available in the US. I have a site with comparative reviews, that includes shots of covers, discs etc. but it's in portuguese.
I'm usually very sensitive to PQ issues and I consider myself among the most DNR/EE freaks here on AVS.

That is a shame, I'd love to see those comparisons. I try to keep tabs on those, but it's mostly 2nd hand info and limited. (Thread linked in sig)

That's a very nice thread Black, I have lots of info that I could add to the thread.
I'll post it there once I have the time ;)
