Impossible to determine from that statement. Here are some things you have to consider:

1. Room layout
2. Room size
3. Vieiwing distance
4. Aspect ratio
5. Room color (walls, ceilings and floor)
6. Windows or no? Covered or not?
7. Screen type (fixed, retractable, etc...)
8. Personal preferences on the image look

These are just a few. I can tell you that at $500 you are limiting some of these factors, but I'll let you chime in on the rest first.

I agree with Jason on needing more info to give you help but you also might want to look in the DIY Screen forum. At your price range the manufactured screens are not realy very different than you can create on your own. There are laminates in both white and grey and the Do-able board is really very nice for under $20 (if it's available in your area). If you are the least bit handy you can make yourself a well performing screen for under $200. If you can get the do-able board you can easily try it out and if you decide you need something better you can always just throw it away.

the room is 11' wide there are 2 small windows which I was going to black out. at the rear of the room 11' by 50' the whole basement is open behind the 20'area. I am done framing and wiring the whole basement. so projector central said 16'8" for a 126" sceen. i am open for wall color and flooring. in the 11' by 20' area where the seating will be. I will post some pictures later I sould be ready for a screen in a month. I bought the projector now because of the price. In want a fixed sceen from carada. precision series. 1.4 gain bw for 800$ I will be watching movies and sports with all lights dimmend behind the projector for parties.

Is that 126" at 16/9 or 2.35/1? Either way it's pretty big for this projector. It can be done but for the best picture you are going to really need low lighting. I would also watch out for the specs on the Carada. From the reviews I've seen they are significantly inflated. IIRC the 1.4 gain actually tested out to be just below 1.0. Projector Central did some testing a few years back. I would take a look at that.

You really need to move the projector closer to the screen to get more brightness for your type of environment. I would shoot for 12 or 13 feet away in order to get the real fl up to the mid teens at least. If you plan on having some lights on behind the seating areas that will tend to wash out the picture and the more brightness the better.

I don't mean to be pushy but I really think you should look at the Wilson Art Designer White Laminate screen threads. It measures out to be a gain of 1.24 (real world) and you don't have to worry about the off angle gain drop being in that narrow room. 20fan (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1074159) has a really easy frame assembly design that makes this something anyone can do. You don't have to be a handyman. They sell this in 5 foot width so you can get really close to your desired screen size. I really think you will get much better performance than the Carada. Just because it's DIY doesn't make it inferior.

I am testing screen samples. My dedicated room is waiting carpet and some finishing touches but the ceiling is done and painted black. I have taped some Carada screen samples (gray, 1.0, 1.4) and a high power screen sample to the wall. The wall is painted with primer meant to cover raw drywall and I have it masked with black paint to a 2.35 54x128 inch shape. As expected the high power is the brightest and literally glows compared to the other screen samples. The gray is darker, the 1.0 is almost identical to the 1.4 and the 1.4 is identical to the...primed wall. Quite a surprise to me. The carada 1.4 literally disappears on the wall. For $26 you can get a 4.7 gallon tub of this primer. The picture is shockingly good even blown up to the full 54x128 size. Now, how to convince my wife that I still need to spend close to a grand to get a screen when the pic looks this good on the drywall?

I believe the BW tested at around 1.1, the CCW tested < 1.

I need to have Da-lite send me their 1.3. I asked Jason and he thought the Dalite 1.3 and the Carada 1.4 were pretty similar. I hope the Dalite 1.3 is brighter. I would like something with more pop than my drywall primer but not sure if I can make the high power work in my set up. Need a angular reflective 2.8 screen for under $1000. No problem, right?
