I got a Coby 209 portable DVD player for X-mas. It only has composite video out, but in the set-up menu you can program it for 16:9 or 4:3. Is it possible to get the proper 16:9 picture over composite? I was under the impression it can only be done through component or HDMI cables.

DVD has had the options of 4:3 vs 16:9 screens since day 1, before component or HDMI were widely available. So it should work, although I don't know the details of that specific player.
The setting applies to the shape of your TV, not the aspect ratio of the titles you are playing.

God, all this time I thought you could only get 16:9 on a DVD player through at least component. I never really tried it through composite until recently, I always had component or HDMI cables and connections.
You just educated me, thank you.
