View Full Version : New HD65 owner, possible lamp failure problem???
clark17 03-01-09, 08:44 AM I pulled the trigger on referbushed HD65 two days ago at the local computer store. Since my basement is not finished yet, I was testing it on my white living room wall 108". Everything is very nice, 720P/1080P mkv and 1080I HDTV are stunning. SD DVD are very good too, I'm finding now that DVD is DVD equal, some movies look better than others, on my 36" Sony HD CRT I didn't see that much difference. I guess the size DOES matter ;)
Anwyays my question is after powering down the unit, right after I did try to power up the unit, and the bulb 'led' came on (constant red), and I couldn't do anyting. According to manual it is a lamp failure. To fix it I did unplug the unit, I did let it cool off for 5 minutes, plug it in and turn on the PJ and everything was fine. Is there a reason to be concern? or I shouldn't be turning it off and on instantly?
I'm concern, because it is a refurb and I have 15 days to return it to a local store, 60 days warranty on the lamp and 90 days warranty on the PJ. So if there is something wrong with the unit I would like to return it within 15 days I'm allowed.
Also I had some HDMI detection issues, where my SD DVD/PC were not being recognized (when searching for HDMI port). However that problem went away and I think it could be something I did...
So do you guys think there is an issue with the unit and I should return it or exchange it for another HD65? Or is the unit fine and I'm just being paranoid? ;)
Otherwise so far I really love this little unit ....
BTW..How do I read how many hours the unit bulb really have?, there is a reset counter aviable option, so of course the unit came with '0' hours used hmmmm...
budwich 03-01-09, 10:22 AM likely "new operator error" ...:-)
you should try let your unit cool off before restarting... I think that's all it is trying to tell. Yes, there is a "10 sec" cool down, "fan rush" period but it may not be / is not enough... probably in this case. As for your hdmi "stuff", likely issue is cable length along with potential for some "standard misalignment" between optoma and your equipment. Anyways, keep an eye on things in the next little period. My "refurb" has been fine but I haven't used it that much since I got it back before xmas.

My HD65 did the same thing with the LED's once. I let it cool down and it has worked fine ever since. If it had happened after I just bought it and mine was used/refurb I might be worried and try to exchange it, but that is your call.
If you go into your menu the lamp hours are under the lamp settings.
Jerrym303 03-01-09, 10:27 AM +1 What you did was exactly what should avoid. The pj protected itself by not trying to immediately re-strike the lamp. By unplugging it, you denied it the chance to go through its normal cool-down mode. Plan to wait at leat 30-60 seconds to restart.

Sorry OP I read your post wrong the first time. Read above this is the correct info. No need to exchange/return =).
clark17 03-01-09, 12:52 PM Thanks guys, and sorry for being such a paranoid newbie ;)
The PJ is the keeper, I took few pictures from my uneven  off white living room wall, I'll post them to the official HD65 thread.
guitarman 03-01-09, 07:00 PM The worst thing you can do with any projector is resart it too soon after you stopped using it. You have to wait an hour, or more would be better. The other thing is not to bump the projector or move it around (table mounted), specially when the bulbs just shutting down or starting.
If you plan to re use the projector in an hour it's best to keep it running. Try not to run them past 6hrs at a time. I've followed these rules and have never had bulb problems.

Thanks for the tips... :D Another stupid question... Is it ok to move turned on PJ around up/down? Basically I would like to find the best place for it in my unfinished basement, so I know where to prepare a proper cable/power drop for it.
TIA

Personally I would never try and turn my projector more than just to align it to to screen during operation. I have even heard that going from table mounted operation to ceiling mounted can cause a premature bulb failure. Since replacement lamps are generally expensive best to make a mounting decision and stick with it. I agree with others that have offered very good advice for maximum bulb life.

guitarman 03-01-09, 10:15 PM We have to move it to align but be as smooth as you can and end it fast.
