A few years back I bought a Panny TH-42PD25 and am very satisfied. I'm remodeling my basement and want to add another plasma in our house but don't know which current model number would be in the same class as the TH-42PD25. So in other words, I want the same thing, just the new model.

Thanks!

EDIT: this was a consumer model that included the video board and sound. I'm not interested in commercial models.

Those Panny ED sets were great, I still have one in the basement. Panasonic no longer makes Enhanced Definition units, so the base models have now moved up to 720P HD resolution. The base 42" HD model for 2008 was TH-42PX80 and the 2009 equivalent is TC-P42X1.

Of course Panasonic also sells much higher end plasmas with full 1080P HD and a variety of features. But the base TH-42PX80 won CNet's best entry level HDTV for 2008. I bought one for a relative and was very impressed by the picture quality for the price.

Both are 768p models. But you can do better for not much more maney . . .

If you're interested in upgrading to a 1080p set, the 2008 1080p models (TH-42PZ80U, or PZ85U etc) are recently discontinued but are still available on clearance, or you can wait a bit as the new TC-P42S1 hits the streets but at a higher price.

What's your budget?

Are you considering a larger screen size (like 50"), or sticking with a 42 incher?

How far are your eyes from the screen?

The viewing distance will be about 8 ft. and will be hooked up with wii & PS3 so 42" is fine for us. If I happen to find a good enough deal on a 50" then maybe I'll go for that and move the 42" to the basement. I figure somewhere around a grand.

Great info. Thanks fellas!

Great info. Thanks fellas! With that budget and usage and viewing distance, i would recommend you get a 1080p TH-42PZ80U or TH-42PZ85U on clearance while you still can. You might be able to find a 50" PX80U 768p set for a little over your budget, but it won't look as good as the PZ series.

At 8 feet I'd much rather have a 50PX80U than a 42PZ80U. No contest imo.

I clearly see SDE at 9 feet on my brother in law's 42PX80U and i can't stand it. He sees it, but since he's coming from 32" interlaced tube TV it doesn't bother him too much. There is no way i'd be able to tolerate a 50" 768p plasma at even 11 feet - i hate seeing SDE, especially when i know that a 1080p set will look perfectly smooth by comparison, even at much closer viewing distances.

Also, the 1080p models have better black levels, better colors, and better processing.

Another intermediate option might be the 46" 1080p Panasonic plasma. I've seen the TH-C46FD18 at our local Costco for less than $1k.
