View Full Version : Ever buy a HD DVD on clearance because it was cheap and then realize it sucks?
cobolisdead 03-02-09, 09:47 AM This has happened to me twice so far. The first time it was Channels, and now It's F&F: Tokyo Drift. I got about 40 minutes into this film before I just completely gave up on it. Such a ridiculous movie, and this is coming from someone that enjoyed the first two films.
So has this ever happened to you?
Well yes, yes I have. The allure of HD eye candy is hard to resist even for bad movies sometimes. The addiction that just keeps giving you know.
webdev511 03-02-09, 11:01 AM Yeah, but even at $10, it's cheaper than a night out at the movies and if you ebay it when you're done, can be cheaper than a rental.
brettwf 03-02-09, 12:44 PM Galaxina...even the comedy of Avery Schrieber could not save this one.

Yeah, that one wasn't that great either. I suffered through it because I am a sucker for Parody films.
champer 03-02-09, 02:07 PM i bought scary movie 4 for 3.99 on HD dvd brand new. i can see now why it was 3.99
mondaycurse 03-02-09, 04:02 PM I didn't think Sneakers was anything special (not too bad), but other than that I don't blind buy.
ti-triodes 03-02-09, 06:42 PM I've gotten a couple that sucked really bad, then listed them on fleabay and got more than I paid for them!
Gotta love those saps...er...people over there!
AmishFury 03-02-09, 08:12 PM nope.. all the movies i bought at fire sale prices are movies i wanted
biggest regret on the format was buying Reds but even then i'm not going to just sell it... at least not yet
Quentin2 03-02-09, 08:42 PM Yeah, I jumped on a Hollywood Video blowout, 4 used HD DVDs for $20. Got about 16 and most were ok to very good but I shoulda passed on these:
Rain In The Mountains
Lady In The Water (combo)
The Reaping (combo)
Dead Silence (combo)
Evening (combo)

Ha...you too huh?
I did the same HV sale with similar titles. I guess I will not waste my time with the ones above.
Quentin2 03-03-09, 02:49 PM At least I passed on Norbit at the HV sale! :D
cobolisdead 03-03-09, 03:03 PM I picked it up for $3. I haven't watched it yet though.
I thought Tokyo drift was the gem of the series. Real cars that are actually fast. relatively accurate depiction of Japan. The 2nd one was horrible...... Oh did I mention the tabasco bottle in the roll over seen? Loved it.:)
mondaycurse 03-03-09, 03:53 PM I picked it up for $3. I haven't watched it yet though.
I regret giving up my Norbit virginity.
cobolisdead 03-03-09, 07:01 PM :d
aggieheels 03-03-09, 10:28 PM If you are watching the F&F movies for the plot, that is your first problem. Loved all of them, but Tokyo is my least favorite. If you don't like fast cars and skimpy outfits, don't watch.
Ant Bully was loved by the whole Fam.
In a different format, just watched Wall-E on DVD, that must be the worst movie ever. But reasonable people can disagree on these type things.

What a cold cold heart. Admit it, when you thought Wall-E was dead you were wiping away the tears. :p
cobolisdead 03-04-09, 10:43 AM I enjoyed Wall-E, but I like that genre of kid films.
You know it's easier to pick out bad movies I paid full HD price for than the cheapies. Reason???? Back then I was gullible enough to buy about anything that was coming out on HD.
So in that frame of mind I still kick myself for paying so much for The Fugitive. Still think it's a great flick but oh what a terrible looking film.
dad1153 03-04-09, 11:58 AM I've never picked an HD-DVD movie that I knew sucked (from other people's opinions that I trust or my own) or that I know I wouldn't like, and as a result have kept my HD-DVD collection pretty fat-free. Ditto for Blu-ray. No price sticker is too low to tempt me to even look at the likes of "Norbit," "Dead Silence," "The Reaping," "Tokyo Drift" (hated the first "Fast and the Furious") and any chick flick that isn't "Pride & Prejudice" (which rocks in high-def!:)). Even some movies that would be considered bad like "Feast," "Slither" and "Scary Movie 4" are right up my alley, so buying them wasn't a waste.
The only movie I regretted getting was Lady in the Water for $20 (back when HD-DVD and BD were still competing)... man, that stunk! Not even Paul Giamatti could save this from being the nadir of absolutely nothing or nobody interesting taking place in front of you for two hours. I was able to sell it for ten bucks though, so no harm and no foul.
And BTW yes, Galaxina sucked but if you didn't know that going in then you deserved to be punked. The cover artwork alone tells you this is a trashy low-budget POS, and the movie itself manages to live down even the lowered-expectations. I paid ten bucks for it but I knew it would be bad, and watching it with an "MST3K" mindset got me through it fine (I even rewatched it with the director's commentary). From the transfer (DVD-quality is being too generous) to the sound to the performances and the so-called 'comedy,' "Galaxina" deserves to remain buried wherever its master has been gathering grain/dust for the past 25 years.
hernanu 03-04-09, 12:48 PM Not yet. I've tried to buy movies that I like (Trading Places) or I've heard good things of (Black Snake Moan, Shooter) or have seen on TV (Next). no Norbits yet, even at $3-$5, it still takes up space on my shelves and I'd rather not look at it if I hate it.
Gotta say, the temptation is there, and I've left a few movies at the bargain bin that I've liked but didn't feel the need to get (Friday Night Lights). I liked Tokyo Drift, but then fast cars and the rest look really good in HD.
If you don't like fast cars and skimpy outfits,

fiddlesticks 03-07-09, 12:57 PM fell into the trap that was Rundown, luckily I re-sold it
Splicer010 03-07-09, 01:17 PM Norbit isn't the worst HD DVD I have...Close but not the worst...Serenity sucks...Channels I couldn't get theu the first 20 minutes before I sold it on ebay...Rain in the mountains is horrible acting but it really isn't that bad...Better than Norbit I think...Traffic is another one that sucks...;)

i am able to avoid rediculous movies cuz i read the synopsis first and can usually tell the good ones from the totally stupid ones. much of the time i can tell just from reading the title, ie F&F tokyo drift. WTF! is this sh*t!
i go for the content before the eye candy.

I don't think Traffic was that bad, but the transfer was terrible. I'm not going to complain because during the height of the war I can't say I spent more than maybe $10-18 for most of my titles (I bought most of them used at FYE, countless others were $7 or 8), a few minor exceptions of movies I really really wanted. I don't have any major regrets, even the worst of them cost less than admission to a good movie theater, so I don't feel cheated out fo anything other than my time for the worst of them.
I guess the same goes for my Blu-rays, almost all of them were purchased used at FYE or 60% off or more at Circuit City when they were closing. Even the worst ones are worth the price paid.
Quentin2 03-07-09, 01:54 PM fell into the trap that was Rundown, luckily I re-sold it
Oh boy, I just got Rundown for $3.99... Hope it isn't too bad!

I quibble with this, but only from the perspective of direct comparison with the DVD. The HD DVD is a definite improvement :)! Since I already had the DVD, there was no way I was going to let the HD DVD slide by!

Enjoy Serenity (watched several times), found Rain In The Mountains interesting (went in blind -- Hollywood Video), found Traffic to be very good, but not something I would frequently return to (already had the DVD). Bottom line, tastes in film vary :)!

I never had the DVD of that, but I love the HD DVD.
stevenjw 03-09-09, 06:15 PM Definitely picked up several titles at $3.99 to 4.99 + free shipping recently from INetvideo that I probable could have skipped. Then again, that's basically the cost of a BigMac, but with less heartburn.
a3willia 03-10-09, 03:57 PM Guilty as charged - Smoking Aces and Alpha Dog - both dogs IMO.

I realize I'll probably be losing my AVS Forum membership for saying this, but I laughed my ass off when I watched Norbit!:o
And Thandie Newton is really easy on the eyes!!!!:D

I would swear my kids and wife watch and enjoy it at least once a week, including today. So you are not alone in your guilty pleasure.
It's easy for my wife to blame it on the request of the kids.
Norbit's worth every bit of 5 bucks; a nice guilty-pleasure flick.
I bought Brokeback Mountain from the bargain bin. I don't even what to tell you guys what it is about. Last blind buy I will ever make.

Not to offend.....but here goes. If you had no idea what the story line was for Brokeback Mountain then you must have been out of the loop or living under a rock or some deserted island without much contact with the outside world.
Even my mother who only watches about three hours of tv a week and about one or two movies every couple of months knew the story line for Brokeback.
Sorry about your blind buy, you could always try to sell it on Amazon or Ebay to get some money back out of it.
Regards,
RTROSE

You have my sympathy :)! I've been specifically avoiding that title for a long time -- and I intend to continue doing the same. To each their own, but that's not for me :)!
Quentin2 03-18-09, 01:25 AM I bought Brokeback a couple months ago. Really a great flick with beautiful PQ of outdoor scenery. Just close your eyes during the scary parts! :D

webphilosopher 03-24-09, 11:25 PM "Lady in the Lake" was a monstrous waste of time. Unfortunately, it was a HV purchase and not a real bargain.
I ma thinking on getting "Norbit". Please, somebody stop me now!!!!!.
Splicer010 03-25-09, 08:06 PM There are ALOT worse flicks than Norbit...Like Lady in the Water...
cobolisdead 03-26-09, 12:13 AM There are ALOT worse flicks than Norbit...Like Lady in the Water...
Man, I hated that movie. All of his movies have a twist in it near the end. This film's twist is that it sucks.
bjmarchini 03-26-09, 10:34 AM I have found a cure for this addiction.... go purple. I am not some blu zealot and really still wish HD DVDs came out ahead (look at my sig). It is very tempting to buy HD DVDs that stink because they were cheap.
With BD, they are still really expensive unless you want junk titles (for the most part). Being purple, I have turned to renting the majority of my movies using the netflix plan. I used to use blockbuster, but recently switched back as I felt I was getting more with the watch instantly feature. Between the two, I still prefer Blockbuster in terms of service.
If there is a movie that I like, I first try to find it on HD DVD if available unless it is less than $15 on BD. Even then I try to limit myself to only those that I know I will definitely want to rewatch. It doesn't have to be oscar winning movies. One of my favorite HD DVD titles that I have already watched twice is Army of Darkness.
One advantage that I dismissed as a red only person is the 3m coating on BD. It really does make these things almost impervious to scratches.... really. That aside, it isn't worth paying $10 more BB just for the 3m coating.
I still buy an HD DVD from time to time. Those ones I realized are garbage.... I sold them back on ebay to some other sucker..... sorry to those people.
TrevorS 03-27-09, 10:12 PM FYI -- according to Amir and the press, the hard coat is NOT 3M, it's their own formulation and it's NOT as tough (3M would have cost more than they were willing to pay). Everything else is just fine, but please get the FACTS portion correct :)!
