View Full Version : RS1 + Radiance VS. RS10
robertogag 03-02-09, 05:56 PM I have been saving to buy a nice projector and get rid or my old CRT 55" TV.
I have been using Lumagen Radiance for this TV (maybe a waste) but it does great job for 480i to 1080i upconvert.
Anyway: Now that I am planning on a projector I have the dilemma. Some of the new features on the RS10 and better video processor..... But...... If I already have the Lumagen (meaning we discount the price of it) is there a big difference if I buy RS1 instead of the new one?
I may be able to get a RS1 for 3K (or 2.3Kused) instead of 1.5K extra on the RS10
Thanks
sceptre-lcd 03-02-09, 06:13 PM i use a radiance with VPL-Vw60 ..so obviously i am biased towards the radiance ..
i think that the rs1+radiance will give you better colors & picture than just an RS10 alone.
EDIT - an even better choice for you would be to get the RS2 (ala pioneer FPJ1) for 3K ..there are a couple for sale in avs classifieds ...that i noticed today ...
HogPilot 03-02-09, 06:39 PM How big of a screen are you looking to light up? Right now a brand new, warranted FPJ1 will be very close to the price of a used, low-hour RS1 (less than the 3K quoted above). Look over in the Good Found Deals section (members only) for info on that. However, if you're looking to stay under about 110" (that would be for a completely light-controlled room) an FPJ1 would work well.
Compared to either projector, I'd say the RS10's biggest benefit over the RS1 or FPJ1 is its manual iris, which will allow you to keep your picture's brightness relatively constant as the bulb dims. The RS10 also has motorzied focus, zoom, and lens shift, compared to the FPJ1's manual lens shift and RS1's completely manual optics. However, the FPJ1 was measured between 500 and 600 lumens at around 25,000-27,000:1, whereas the RS10 can only do about 400 lumens at that CR. There has been talk of an overall improvement in the quality of the optics (and a resulting improvement in PQ) from the RS1/2 to the RS10/20, so there's that to consider as well.
Overall I think the FPJ1 would be the projector per dollar right now, but again that's assuming you're not trying to light up a really large screen. I have a Radiance that I used with an RS1 with exceptional results on a 98" AT screen, and I upgraded to the FPJ1 when the deal first started. I'll get my hands on it in about a month and a half when I get home from being overseas, so I don't have any firsthand reports yet, but I'm really looking forward to seeing how it looks. I also got a very low hour Marants VP 11S1 just to compare DLP to LCoS (even though I know that it's a rather apples-to-oranges comparison), so hopefully I can report on that as well. Who knows, I may end up liking the Marantz better overall, but the CR on a color-corrected FPJ1 is going to be very hard to beat.

Thanks for you reply.
I am planning to get a 92" screen so probably your suggestion on the FPJ1 could be consider. So, you say FPJ1 is a the same as the JVC RS2? But less expensive?
Woow, this is great. But what about the light on the corners that I have read about? Can you fix it with the Lumagen?

Yes - the FPJ1 is just a re-badged RS2, and right now because Pio is getting out of the display business, if you look over in the Good Found Deals section, you can get one for within only a couple hundred of a used RS1. Since your screen is smaller than mine, you'd definitely be fine with the FPJ1 as long as you're using it in a light controlled environment. Plus the FPJ1 has 11-point parametric greyscale/gamma correction so, so you'd really only need to use the Radiance for gamut correction and maybe a slight tweak to the greyscale. AFAIK, neither the FPJ1 nor the RS2 has had an issue with the bright corners reported by RS1 users, but if you did have that problem I don't think it would be fixable with a Radiance.
John Ballentine 03-03-09, 07:17 AM Bright corners are not fixable. This was much less of an issue w/ RS2 (vs. RS1).
