Hi all,

I recently got my first projector, the Optoma HD65. Now I have one of those budget Philips DVD players, which does 1080i. The 720p it does is enough, but I find the picture lacking in many areas.

I now want to buy a newer better player so that I can get the maximum out of my projector, Optoma HD65. I am wondering if I should go for?

1) Oppo DV-981H

or
2) Pioneer DV610

or
3) Denon DVD 1740

Am really confused.

Edit: I read in some places that the Faroudja-based upscaling players produce macroblocking which is further enhanced on DLP projectors (like the Optoma HD65). So should I stick to non Faroudja-based players?

A lot of DLP owners do report macroblocking on Faroudja-chip players like the OPPO 971/981. Some are able to correct it by careful calibration but if you don't want to risk then you should avoid those.

Other OPPO players will not have the problem: the 980 ($169) and the 983 ($399).

I don't have any info as to the others on your list.

Thanks! Much appreciated. If I do take my chances with the 981 and calibration, where do I find the tips on calibration?

Thanks.

I have now omitted the Oppo 981 from my list. However, I have included the Toshiba XDE500 and the Oppo 980. Also, the Pio DV610 is still under consideration. Can anyone help me with these?

If you can afford the Oppo then go ahead because it has the best video upscaler in your list. I chose the Pioneer DV610 over the Tosihiba because of the usb port for playing divx files. The Toshiba and Pioneer might not ba a huge improvement over your current Philips player.

If it's just a matter of $80-100 difference and you have a massive DVD collection, then by no means invest on the best Oppo player.
