View Full Version : What's the best HD DVD you picked up in a Clearance Bin?
Quentin2 03-03-09, 03:47 PM Thought I'd start a parallel thread to the one about the worst HD DVDs found in a clearance sale. At first I was thinking of titles you actually bought in a B&M bargain bin but I suppose online clearance is ok too.
The best one I picked up in a bargain bin was Dreamgirls (2-disc HD DVD edition) at Hastings for $5. Great movie, great music, great PQ and AQ plus a second disc! Hard to go wrong...
I just ordered Sea of Love and Red Dragon for $1 a piece.
DaveUpton 03-03-09, 04:28 PM Chronicles of Riddick and King Kong for 4 dollars each.
protovision 03-03-09, 04:35 PM - BSG s1 ($10)
- Star Trek s1 ($40 I think)
- Planet Earth ($30)
Bought during online fire sales, the others that I picked up in bargain bins I haven't really watched, and bought out of habit/collection.

Hey, anything with Ellen Barkin is worth a buck! :p

A $1? Where?
A $1? Where?
Game Funk had around 20 titles for $1 each, brand new with free shipping. I suspect they only had 1 or 2 copies of each since they sold out within 5 minutes of someone posting on SD (http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=570289&t=1222017).
I put in an order for 2 just now and it went through at GFunk. We'll see if it gets cancelled. I saw no OOS messages.

Yup, just ordered 6 more titles and the funds are withdrawn from my PayPal account. Keeping my fingers crossed, I posted the details on Special Buys and Deals Thread.

brettwf 03-09-09, 01:08 PM So far my two best from the Kroger bargin bin is Hot Fuzz and The Kingdom. Have several more to watch so my opinion may change.
From the Blockbuster clearance: Superman II (Donner cut).
Now if only I am Legend and Twister would fall into the clearance bins...
Brettwf
erick granato 03-14-09, 08:39 AM Fast times at ridgemont high, Top Gun $6.99 each at Zellers brand new
Rigby Reardon 03-14-09, 10:51 AM Hm, hard to say. Probably Black Snake Moan ($5), Rescue Dawn (Dutch, 4€), Torchwood (UK, about 20€), and Alexander Revisited ($8, always hesitated to pick this up due to the bad rep, but it's actually a really good movie).

tcfiero 03-15-09, 10:39 PM 3 copies of Michael Clayton and 1 copy of Into The Wild. All new and sealed for $7.50 at Movie Gallery in their previously viewed bin.
guitarplayer 03-15-09, 11:56 PM Most of my nearly 100 discs were picked up in clearance bins. I think I only bought 3 or 4 HD-DVD's at regular price because I got in the game so late. I started when Circuit City put all their stock on blowout right after the Toshiba announcement that they were getting out of HD-DVD. I picked up a bunch of discs there. Then I picked up a few on ebay, a handful at a local Hollywood video and at Hastings, then I got some from Kroger stores and a forumite picked me up 4 more from a clearance sale in his area.
Out of my recent purchases, one of the discs I got at Kroger was Talk To Me, which I thought was a well told story. Lots of language in it, but a good movie, and probably pretty true to life. It was a better than expected movie. The Blade Runner Set for $19 at Circuit City was a pretty good deal as well.
luigionlsd 03-16-09, 05:45 PM Waterworld for $4.99 :D
Seriously though, I bought almost all of the good titles I care for while the format was still flowering. As far as value, my greatest purchase was in December 2006 when Amazon offered the 10% off promotion for buying 3 HD DVD or Blu-ray Discs at a time - snagged Serenity, Batman Begins and V for Vendetta. Reaped quite a bit of savings across the two formats and ~1.75 years the promotion ran!
Black snake moan , anygood????

If you like strong character driven plots yes.
I paid freakin 30 dollars for it and I don't regret it.
Spy Game $3 , very surprised how much I liked it!

IMO, that is a great film. The lead character's manipulation of the system is amazing.
Super XP 03-29-09, 06:50 AM They must be clearing out the HD DVD warehouse or something because so many places are getting brand new HD DVD titles and selling them at discount.
I heard studios are still pressing HD DVD as demand for consumers are crazy low prices have put pressure on the studios.

Where did you hear or read this rumor?
cobolisdead 03-29-09, 12:59 PM No studio is still producing HD DVDs. What is happening is that all the titles that were out there are finally getting clearanced after a year or so waiting in warehouses.

If I were a Warner/Universal/etc executive and saw HD DVDs for sale at $6 each, while costing more than that to produce, the last thing I would want is to produce more.
Quentin2 03-30-09, 02:45 AM I agree, there's no way Warner/Universal/Paramount would be pressing new HD DVDs to sell. Why do that just to lose money on each sale plus have $5-6 discs cutting in to sales of your $25 Blu versions? It would be insane.
We're just enjoying closeout sales on existing stock. When they're gone, they're gone.
ChrisW6ATV 03-30-09, 02:58 AM Clerks 2 was definitely my best bargain for US$2.99 at Fry's in the S.F. Bay Area. I actually bought it to get its two-disc HD DVD case for my copy of Zodiac ($7.50 used but like-new from Hollywood Video). I went ahead and watched it, and it is hilarious! (Provided your sense of humor is wide-open, that is.) Then, I went out and bought another copy to keep in its own original case. So, now I have an extra copy of Clerks 2, in a two-disc standard DVD case (from the Hollywood Video Zodiac), that will probably go to Ebay I suppose.
Not exactly clearance but good enough for days work at Frys...
