The best of the ripping apps we use in OS X like MacTheRipper and RipIt can make a perfect copy of the disc--so everything is retained, menu structure, DD 5.1, DTS, etc. You have to go out of your way to de-select DD 5.1 and DTS, actually.

It's also easy to retain AC-3/DD 5.1 and DTS if you do main feature only with MTR or DTOX. How much effort you decide to put into ripping will depend mainly on how much time you have, which front end you like to use and how much storage space you have.

Now, if you're talking about an app like Handbrake, which rips AND transcodes, and hope to play files back on the aTV for instance, you can still elect to keep the AC-3/DD 5.1 track, just choose a second audio selection after the first two channel one.

we should put a stickie here saying don't follow the advice of that guy, you'll just screw your system up.

To play VIDEO_TS with DD 5.1 and DTS passthrough with Apple dvdplayer.app you need nothing else and with Front Row you need Perian installed. That's it.

Now, it might get a little more complicated when you try to play back something like an .mkv with AC-3 in Front Row, but his bad advice is still problematic. Follow the Graham Booker/Perian developer work-around instead. It's been mentioned on previous threads. And only do it if you have a lot of that content and if it's necessary for those files. With dvd rips, no, it's not necessary.
