So, we're on the verge of getting Dish HD service and the salesman told us that we only needed one receiver--the Dish Network ViP722 HD DVR, for both of our TVs. The first one is a new Samsung LN46A750 that the DVR would be directly connected to, and the other TV is a 720p 32" Samsung upstairs. The salesman said the the wireless control would work fine from upstairs. That part's OK with me. But, I'm reading now, both on the Dish site and [sortof] here on the forums, that the second TV upstairs is only going to be receiving SD. Is that true??? TV1=HD TV2=SD
If so, is the only way to have the upstairs TV get HD also is to have a second HD receiver for it? I am not interested in trying to run coax, or anything like that....
Any insights would be appreciated
Thanks

If you want Satellite HD at both TVs - yes - get another receiver. You might consider 2 VIP 612's instead.

Thanks for the reply, Scooper. I'll look into it.

Do you need to watch different programs simultaneously on both TVs? If not, you can connect one to the HDMI output and one to the component outputs.

You do need a second receiver for HD on the upstairs TV. The 612 is a DVR that lacks the second SD independent output. If you connect an antenna for OTA locals, I suggest you look at a 622 or 722 for a DVR instead of a 612. While the 612 is a fine DVR, the OTA tuner is not as good as the ones in the 622, 722 and 211 series'. The 211s now have external usb hard drives for recording. There is also a 222 but I'm not sure of its features. If you don't need a second DVR, I recommend a 211. Costs less and you won't be charged a monthly DVR fee which is $7/month for each DVR. If you need a second DVR then you may want to look at one of the receivers other than the 211 or 222. The 612, 622 and 722 models have dual tuners which give you more options in recording and watching at the same time.
Thanks, all, for the input. I'm glad we noticed this before they installed it.
