I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I have a question regarding buying recievers from dish network.

I just got throught talking to a lady from dish network that doesn't seem to know anything and I desperately need some help.
I wanted to buy a VIP 612 HD DVR Receiver and the lady told me that besides paying for the receiver, I would be charged monthly fee. I told her I thought the monthly fee was for leasing the recievers and she assured me that I would still pay the fee.

Do any of you own recievers for dish network service and if you do, are you charged a monthly fee for it being "active".
Thanks so much in advance.

You will not pay for the receiver lease, but you will pay a DVR service fee of up to $7 per month IIRC. If you sub to DVR advantage, this means you will only save something like $3 per month by owning the DVR.

As far as I know, you cannot avoid "DVR service fees" on any satellite provider*. The price you pay for the box only accounts for the cost of the hardware, not the software.

* Except with some long since discontinued models that cannot receive most HD channels.

In addition to the DVR service fee of $5.98, there is a fee of $7 for any HD receiver after the first one (I believe it is $5 for an SD receiver). It is called a receiver connection fee if is owned and it is called a leasing fee if it is leased. Same charge however.

The difference is that if you own the DVR you can sell it when you are done with it whereas with a leased receiver it has to be returned. However I have found that selling the receiver is usually done when it is obsolete and therefore useless.
