I do not know what is meant (or sounds like) by a subwoofer sounding 'muddy'. Is there some sort of audio aid that I could listen to and 'see' what it is?

Take a crappy boom box or a crappy set of 2.1 computer speakers and turn up the bass a little too high and listen to the way that sounds. That will give you an idea of it.
