View Full Version : WDTV firmware with dvdrom enabled
b-rad.cc 03-05-09, 06:25 AM Hello everyone. If you have a wdtv you might be in the group I am that was annoyed that western digital didn't allow usb dvd drives. Well in case you haven't followed the firmware hacking thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1100062) I coded something, cd-manager (http://b-rad.cc/cd-manager), that allows you to use a dvd drive with your wdtv. Until now you had to use Zoranders ext3-boot (http://root.unknown.sk/wdtv/wiki/doku.php?id=ext3-boot-releases), which maybe requires a bit of finesse. Well today i remixed both official firmwares with cd-manager, so now you can flash your wdtv with my firmware and use external dvd drives.
NOTE: you must have a supported drive/flashdisk inserted and media library turned ON. Since dvd drives are officially unsupported the wdtv will report 'no storage present' without a supported drive in. no way around this. All drives must be attached at boot to be detected at this time.
I've also added support for ext2, ext3, xfs, and reiser partitions IF they are inserted at boot time. Hotplugging will come eventually.
There is an issue or two that i'm working out mentioned on the page below, so keep in mind this is just a beta release of sorts :)
This thread is for people to say if their drive does/doesn't work and general questions/issues. ** This is just a beta and there are minor issues atm, note them at the linked page ** :)
For the record my dvd drive is a Plextor 716A and it allows fast forward, reverse, subtitles, and resumes.
http://b-rad.cc/wdtv-firmware-dvd-enabled
***NOTE*** I have tested both versions multiple times and they work correctly, but I make absolutely no guarantees about anything and am in no way responsible for anything, should something go drastically wrong for who knows what reason. it really shouldn't, but...
sinker442 03-05-09, 04:24 PM Great work, but link is down (The uploader has removed this file from the server)

Sorry, after I posted it and continued messing around I seemed to have thrown the player in a loop somehow...not sure why it happened after having worked all day, but perhaps i did something in my final prep. I had to use my serial cable to recover, so I pulled everything down to prevent this from happening to someone else...if it happens to you you are not bricked, just looping.
I am fixing today and will update soon, sorry about the false start;)
<<< edit: totally unable to reproduce the freeze today, so I'm thinking it was something I randomly did >>>
Hi, very nice job!
Soon i'll test it with Samsung SE-S084B and i'll notice about it.
But a question: is it possible to read original DVDs with CCS & C.?
The limitations of this firmware, there's a possibility to be removed someday?
Bye.
nicodocet 03-07-09, 12:35 PM Wonderful release!
But, is hotplugging no longer available at all? Also with FAT32 hdd/pendrive?

&...no. Western digital didnt pay to license css i imagine as this is not a dvd player, so I'm not going to open any can of worms. Plus whereas I might be able to get it working it would probably be illegal where I am, so no again.
The point of this is to be able to watch x264 mkv's or xvid off dvds, buy a $10 dvd player if you want real dvds...
Wonderful release!
But, is hotplugging no longer available at all? Also with FAT32 hdd/pendrive?
Thanks!. I have not done anything to the functionality of officially supported drives. FAT32, NTFS, and HFS can all still be ejected&hotplugged whenever...just not external dvdroms, ext2, ext3, xfs, or reiser drives. I'll work that out when I have time.
JayAllan 03-09-09, 01:34 AM This looks very interesting. I need to get an external USB to try it.
You should post this here as well: wdtvforum.com (http://wdtvforum.com) :)
Would this firmware work with BD-ROM drive or just DVD-ROM? I have an external BD-ROM Liteon which would be cool if it would work with this firmware.
Cheers
I´ve noticed i have to keep plugged the usb stick with the firmware after having flashed the WDTV with the dvd enabled firmware, is it normal?. Great work!!.

You mean the firmware is not flashed into WDTV, same as ext3-boot firmware?
If I unplug the usb stick with firmware, then plug in other usb drive, the firmware will fail to load?
funnybobby 03-09-09, 04:34 PM Hello, (excuse my english, i am French). I've a question : I've just buy a WDTV and i have a problem with some video. It's possible to read rv9 or rv10 mkv with the WDTV ?

This a permanent flash, once its flashed you may remove the key that contained it and not reinsert it again. This is the whole point.

In my case , i flashed my WDTV with the enabled dvd firmware, it restarted after it got the 100% of the flashing bar....if i switch off the key with the firmware my dvd unit disappeares, it appeares again when i plug it again. When i check the firmware version installed i get "firmware 1.01.02". May be something was wrong during the flashing.....
"After the wdtv has booted if media library is on go to Video Folders and you’ll see everything you have connected! If media library is not on, you will not see anything connected..." Media library on?....i dont understand.

In case you miss the bold up there, have you tried sticking a different key/drive in? Or maybe just deleting the firmware off of the stick and reinserting it. You need something supported in to see anything.
I don't change what the firmware internally thinks its version is, so no suprise there. If it went to 100% and rebooted *AND* you used my modified firmware, then your dvd drive will work *ONLY* when anything supported is inserted...like it does currently it sounds like.

flashed successfully.
my LG dvd-rom is recognised by this new firmware.
However, are subtitles are not supported at the moment? Hope it can be solved soon.
anyway, thanks for the great work, much better than WD team.

Just tried it with my external LITE-ON EZ-DUB dvd player ... it wasn't recognized.

yours working?
I tried several of my discs not working.
Maybe it refers to embedded subtitles. I don't know.
Hope brother b-rad.cc can help us.

Ok i found the answer to my problem, everything was right. I didn´t know you have to plug the dvd unit "AND" a HDD at the same time. That´s because when i plugged the pendrive with the firmware started to work, it wasn´t the firmware inside the pendrive which makes it work, was the pendrive itself plugged. I proved some others HDD without the firmware decompressed inside and it works, recognizes the dvd unit.
Thanks a lot. Nice work!!!.
Hi all,
I was hoping that this firmware could solve my problem with acessing the WDTV box to my XFS formated server. But i have tried everything and nothing seems to work. Can anyone help me?
DocuMaker 03-10-09, 07:02 PM Thank you for all your efforts! Nice work.
Please someone let me know when an X-Box 360 external HD-DVD add-on will work with this firmware.
I don't expect it to play the HD-DVD's directly from the disc through the WD TV. I know it would only work to read DVD recordable discs with files on them compatible with the WD player.
But some might not want to buy a separate external DVD drive if they already have an X-Box HD-DVD add-on. These can be had on the cheap these days, for about $25-30.
I don't have an external DVD, but I might rather pick up an X-Box HD-DVD add-on for like $25, if it could work with the WD TV HD.
The only downside of course is that the X-Box add-on will only read DVD's and will not burn, like other DVD externals. But it reads HD-DVD's as well which is a bonus.
Please someone let me know when an X-Box 360 external HD-DVD add-on will work with this firmware.
I have both xbox360 HD-DVD add-on and Samsung external writer, all can be recognized by this dvd enabled fw.
But the only strange thing is ext .srt subtitle can not be displayed yet, only the embedded subtitle show well.
genesis113 03-11-09, 06:05 AM confirmed now, only embedded subtitles working.

Thanks! That is good to know. I might have to pick one of these up. Is there ever any hope that one could play the content directly off an HD-DVD through the WD? I'm guessing no.
First of all, the WD doesn't support the .evo extension, which is what I think the video container is on HD-DVD's. But let's say in a future firmware upgrade WD added support for .evo
I'm assuming it still would not work, because of encryption?
What happens when you put in an HD-DVD movie in your X-Box add-on and feed it to the WD via the USB cable?
I'm assuming you cannot browse or see the file structure? Does the HVDVD_TS folder or the .EVO files even show up?
Thanks for all your help.
dnunn128 03-15-09, 12:14 AM could u explain the way u got the device out of the looping mode?

dnunn128 03-16-09, 08:23 PM hello everybody, long time reader, second time posting. hoping someone could explain exactly the process of flashing this device. i downloaded the firmware and it goes through the motion of updating, but every time it reboots, it tells me that i have a new firmware on the usb stick that im using. Is there something that im missing? Im trying to use a xbox 360 hddvd addon and it is not recognizing it. Thanks if anyone could help me with this.

If you have flashed with DVD mod you don't have to put the usbkey with DVD mod/Boot ext3 firm... just a usbkey, empty also.
dnunn128 03-17-09, 05:46 PM thank you for the reply ayami, sorry for sounding so new but what do u mean by the usbkey?
Never mind figured out, thank you

:D:D the wdtv doesn't like (aka won't) boot with my usb-serial cable plugged into itself but not connected on the other end :p Was never any issue.
New release coming soon! ;)
new0rder 03-18-09, 11:34 AM First of all thanks for the great firmware. I tested on couple of exteral /internal dvd/cd drives.
all works
DVD IDE that works.
Philips IDE DVD r/rw DVD8801/96
Lite-on DVD rom LTD-183
external CDROM
Targus CDROM usb slim drive.
at first I didn't turn on the Media Manager in setting, so I got the unrecognized USB device. after I turn it on, everything works.
I use the following adaptor for the hookup.

Thanks, b-rad.cc for the firmware. Will the external Lite-On EZ-DUB be supported in the next release?

Well I haven't seen you post any log files like I asked of you, so no. I am not psychic;)
Download and install Zoranders ext3-boot (http://root.unknown.sk/wdtv/wiki/doku.php?id=ext3-boot-releases). Reboot a few times and then upload the messages text files somewhere and I'll have a look. Only way to take care of things unless you buy me an ex-dub:p
soulcoco 03-19-09, 01:41 PM Updated the firmware, and after reboot it updates again. neverending update loop???? whats wrong?
dnunn128 03-19-09, 07:56 PM i know i had to downgrade to a lower version first, then try one of the different firmware(there were two to choose from). once i did that it, it installed but when it went to the loading screen, it kept asking to update the firmware. after getting the suggestion to erase the firmware off the thumbdrive and to reformat the the drive to fat32, the wdtv recognized my usb dvd drive. Im using the xbox360 hddvd addon. i know it sounds confusing, but thats the steps i took.
soulcoco 03-20-09, 03:20 AM I got it to work now :)
genesis113 03-21-09, 03:34 PM hoping external subtitles can be supported
leaffan 03-22-09, 02:35 AM Noob question - I have updated firmware with latest release from b-rad.cc (wdlxtv-thanks for all your info and hard work)... Heres where I'm at
usb 1 - 2gb flashdrive
usb 2 - hub - recognized
port 1 16gb flash - recognized
port 2 usb external samsung writemaster dvd - model se-s184 - not recognized
My test disk in dvd has 5 avi files written as data disk, My drive/disk is not recognized.
Am I missing a step? I have not loaded any other programs/files. I have not written/edited any files only updated firmware. I have not hooked up my usb/lan yet. So far, I love this little box...
Edit - Did hard reboot... works like a charm!!!
THANK-YOU!
I'm happy to report that my external Lite-On EZ DUB DVD player works with the latest update. Thanks, b-rad!
snakebert 03-28-09, 04:11 AM This burner works with the firmware. My only problem is that when I change disks the directory does not update. I have to pull the power cord on the WDTV to get a proper refresh of the DVD directory. How does everyone else handle disk swaps? I have tried to eject, but it ejects the USB thumb drive that I need to keep in for the external DVD to work. Any advice would be most welcome!
Thanks

have you gone back to the home menu and then re-entered folder view? I've never had a problem with anything refreshing, not even files on my NFS share.
In a couple days I'll release the next version of DVDMOD (http://b-rad.cc/wdtv-firmware-dvd-enabled), and then a short bit later when the new FW comes I'll mod it as well :D

Thanks for all your efforts. Joined up here after lots of lurking because I wanted to thank you for improving and my newest (and coolest) little gadet.
I'm not a super-geek but I was able to successfully install your WDTV_FW_1.01.02_B-RAD.CC_DVDMOD-0.4 mod last week and my LG GE20 External DVD Drive worked.
The only issues I noticed were after loading in several discs, the player stopped seeing them. Also, some of my discs are DVD-Data burns, and the player only seems to recognize 5 or 6 characters of the file titles and truncates them with (randomly) assigned numbers at the end. I'll burn UDF from now on.
Tried out your WDTV_FW_1.02.00_B-RAD.CC_DVDMOD-0.4.1 last night and I did want to let you know of the few problems I've had (not complaining, just letting you know of my experiences). After the upgrade, my WDTV had real problems recognizing my HDD that I've used on it without issue since day one. 10 or so minutes of "reading the USB drive" and then, nothing - when I click on "USB 2" it says there are no files. Resets and reboots eventually solved the problem but then it was sluggish after that. Slow to navagate the list of files, slow to react once a file was entered, and a 5 or 6 second delay before actually playing.
I'm going to try to go back to your last version as I can live with the jumbled icons.
Again, please don't take this as a complaint. I really appreciate the work you've done and hope you are able to continue to improve on it (at least until WD adds DVD-Rom support!)
Cheers
LL

The OSD issues you mention weren't me really, they were due to the pre-release firmware. I've updated DVDMOD to 1.02.03, find it here (http://b-rad.cc/754/wdtv-firmware-10203_dvdmod-042).
As for the strange issues with filenames, no clue what could be causing that as I've never seen/heard of it till now. If you want to get to the bottom of it, install WDLXTV and my log-saver.app.bin (http://b-rad.cc/log-saver.app.bin) package, then post a few sets of logs where the problem you describe happens over at wdtvforum (http://wdtvforum.com).
Now would be a good time to show your appreciation ;)

I got WDLXTV 0.4.3.2 with Samsung SE-S084B and the driver is not silent, seems like it always at 16x speed... is it normal?
There's a solution to make silent that optical driver?

Yes its locked at 16x. Any slower and seeking will not work with high definition material. My Plextor 716A is silent at 16x, maybe your drive is just noisy.

I have tried to play some 720p mkv file, it's work fine, ffw too...

Too high shouldn't matter, your drive will just ignore the value.
try ffw on high bitrate 1080p if you have it, i think 8x didn't work for me in that case. I tried to cover all possible cases.

AlexFWD 04-13-09, 09:53 AM Thanks for your hard work. I really appreciate not having having to copy a mkv dvd to my usb hard drive everytime I watch a movie. (I left you a small donation)
I have the same DVD burner as you (PLextor 716UF) and I have a question if you dont mind: the WDHDTV recognizes the drive as "cd-rom" only after a system reset with the drive plugged in and powered on as well as a recognized thumbdrive inserted. If I power turn off the WDHDTV with the remote and keep the Plextor drive powered on, when I turn on the WDHDTV again it will still see the Plextor DVD drive. If I power down the WDHDTV and also the Plextor DVD drive, when I restart the WD unit (after having powered on the DVD drive) it does not see my Plextor drive anymore. I have to either keep the drive powered on at all times or perform a system reset for the WDHDTV to detect the drive again.
Is this the same for you? Do you know if the Plextor DVD drive uses alot of power while it's on (but not spinning)?
Thanks for your time and help!

Thanks for the update. Worked like a charm. Phew! Had to explain to the wife why our new toy wasn't working well, and after the fix, promise not to mess with it anymore (unless of course you made an even better mod!).
As for the DVD-Data disc issue, I will try to figure out how to use your log-saver.app.bin package and do as you suggest.
AlexFWD, I think I have the same issue with my LG GE20 External DVD Drive (but still need to do more testing), although it's a pretty quiet drive when running and silent when not, I still unplug it when not in use to help lower the electrical bill (I don't know about the drive itself using any power, but that AC Adaptor is drawing juice 24/7). If I have to do a hard re-boot when I want the WDTV to see the DVD Drive, that's a minor bother when I get to avoid, as you mentioned, the copying deal everytime.
FVD and ddurdle, did you try a hard reboot (unplugging the WDTV and re-plugging it) with a HDD and DVD Drive plugged in?
Thanks again b-rad.cc

WOW
This thread has single-handedly convinced me to buy a WDTV. I currently have a PS3 but am fed up with it not playing .MKV files, DTS audio, having to split my files into <4gb chunks because it doesn't read NTFS, etc, etc, etc...
So I was going to go with a PopCorn Hour box, but after reading that forum all afternoon, there appears to be SOO many bugs with it, and complete lack of support, that I'm skipping past it.
I was going to get a WDTV but since I have 2x 164-disc binders filled with DivX discs, I didn't want to have to keep hooking everything up to my PC then coping files over each time.
SO...
I'm going to buy (in the next 30 mins)
- WD TV box
- Western Digital MyBook Essential 640GB and format NTFS

I can't seem to find just a external DVD-ROM, they're all writers.
I wonder if one of those external hard drive kits would work with an internal DVD-ROM drive??? The EIDE plugs and power plugs are the same... 'wonder if they could turn an internal DVD-ROM drive into an external DVD-ROM USB drive the same way they turn an internal HD into an external usb drive ???
Anyway, wish me luck. Heading out to Best Buy now.
ps. I noticed the external DVD-ROM drive has a DVD read spead of 12X. Will that be a problem?
'Got my WDTV today :) (darn 1TB exernal is still formatting (3hrs later) to NTFS)
As posted above ^^ the only drive available (external of course) had a DVD read spead of 8X and I see this firmware needs 16x to seek through HD vidseos. 'Will wait for a reply before I possibly waste money on the 8x.

:D hi, welcome to wdtvland
I use plextor 716A, that is just an internal drive connected to a generic ide->usb adapter. it works.

I guess only embedded subtitles supported at the moment, hopefully brother b-brad can make external subtitles supported.
my ggw h20l runs only 100% original blu-ray does not work because the picture is not black ton
I would not always be a blu-ray copy because it is the yes,
just makes no sense, because then I can also iso on the hdd to make
I would be happy if there would be a solution because a blu-ray copy is also here illegally and I would like to use something original fg
or what I do wrong? which does not run?
ps 've translated it because I can not English
pomigit 04-17-09, 01:23 AM Hey B-RAD
I noticed someone asked if BD-ROM drives work and cant seem to see that the question has been answered, im really keen to know this myself as it would be nice to plug in a usb Blu ray drive.
Cheers
Hello.
I tested my XBOX360 HD-DVD ADDON Drive.
but it’s not recognized in WD TV
following is my process
I flashed your DVDMOD 1.01.02 and when WDTV is off, I attatched my HDD and ODD in the USB slot EACH. (USB1, USB2)
I didn’t use the USB HUB.
after I boot the WD TV, WD TV trying to searching the drive and he/she found my HDD.
after few second, the ’searching light’ on the WD TV blinking again, and it stopped blinking.
after all, I go into the ‘video’menu and go to the ‘Folder View’, there’s only USB1.. not the CDROM.
and he/she didn’t show up the files on the DVD neither.
SO, no changes in here, I turn off the power of DVD Drive and turn on again.
WD TV starts to seeking the new devices… after few second
It says that ‘it’s not supported device’
do you know the what’s the problem on this?
do I have to use the ‘USB HUB’ in only one slot?
like, USB HUB inserted on USB1 and
ODD and HDD should be in the USB HUB and
WDTV can recognize the ODD in USB1?
Please Help me and I really appreciate your(B-rad and guys who share information in here) efforts.
Thanks.
p.s. I tested again with DVDMOD based on ver. 1.02.04 and it's the same.

I flashed with my SMALL USB-STICK.
after I removed it, I inserted my HDD(with ONLY contains MKVs) in USB1
and inserted my ODD in USB2
and IT WORKS!!
so...
What's the reason?! I can't find it.
If I put the Firmware Files into the HDD, is it OK?
and is it normal way to operate this?
please gimme an answer. thanks.

and I confirmed that when use XBOX hd-dvd, external Subscript files can't work.
and in the MKV's subscript, it works.
Lost Lamb,
Thx, your suggestion works for the Lite - On
OK, I understand the meaning that
'when BOOTING', Supported and Unsupported should be inseserted at the same time.
1.
it means that 'BOOTING' is not just turn off and turn on.
It means that 'BOOTING' is 'POWER OFF' and 'POWER ON', I mean Electric POWER. not stand-by.
am I right?
----
2. and also, whenever I change my DVD, I should 'POWER OFF' my WDTV
and change DVD, and then, POWER ON of my WD TV.
is this the right procedure?

yes, booting requires a power cycle.
using the power button merely disable/enables the OSD

I don't have to, I can just use my eject button and the next disk I use is automagically mounted...but ymmv depending on your drive.

Hey there :)
First a big thanks to your great firmware support b-rad!
I just flashed DVDMod 0.4.3 and it works fine!
Now as i still have a laptop not working that properly i decided to get the optical drive out of it. i bought an external silm optical drive usb connector with GL811E chipset in connection with a cd drive, just took it apart and connected a QSI SBW 242 CDRW/DVD from my laptop. Now i've got several issues.
1st: some 720p with DD 5.1 work fine - not recognized any problems also fastforward and fastreverse and skip 10min+/- works!
2nd some 72op with DD 5.1 hang and then just play on choppy picture without sound eg: Allgemein

Playback connected via USB to my Computer is fine, so it seems the drive is not running at full speed connected to the WDTV perhaps you can check on this.
if i play these dvds via usb to ide converter and a pioneer dvr-109DB 3.5'' drive everyting works fine!
How can i make this message.txt?
greets Goett
BigBoppa 04-24-09, 08:19 AM I experienced some strange behaviour regarding the FF and FR (fast forward, -rewind) in DVDMod 0.4.3 (it might also be at earlier versions):
- After doing a cold boot (cycle power) every FF/FR from DVD/HD works fine as it should be.
- After changing DVD FF/FR does not work any more until i do a complete power cycle again. Playback of new DVD(.mkv) is still working fine.
- I have the same (!) at my harddisk when disconnect and connect again without 'eject' it: No more FF/FR of files which definitely did this bevore.
-> so i think it is caused by the way cd-manager detects new '(dvd)drives', i can not 'eject' a cdrom, there is only usb1 and usb2 to eject...
Is there a chance to fix this?
I use a LiteOn eSAU208 and an active usb-hub (delock) at my WDTV, if that helps...
Regards,
bbop

ahemmatin 05-02-09, 06:11 AM Dear b-rad.cc
Thank you for your unofficial firmware.but I found some errors working with DVD ROM (my DVD ROM is ASUS E818A3Tand my firmware is WDLXTV version 0.5.2):
1.I can not play VCD Discs by going to directory "DiskVolume/Mpegav/ avseq01.dat" . The WD TV says "Can not support this type of file....". but if you copy the .dat file into a flash usb memory or copy it to root directory of a cd or dvd WD can play it.
2.Sometimes some supported files on cd or dvd can not be played but if you reset the device by unplugging the power cable and booting the device all files can be played.
3.If you play a music file from a cd or dvd in background then you want to go to the folders of the disc to see other files like pictures the device reboot suddenly.
4. Subtitles out of a video file can not be detected by WD TV like .srt or sub/idx files.
5.The search option to find files on disc is disabled.
6.Sometimes after a period of the device(WD TV) inactivity especially when you turn off it by remote contol the "Disc Volume" in Folder view is disappeared however a disc is inserted in DVD ROM.
I would be very thankfull if you answer me.
Taylour 05-03-09, 11:38 PM Hi Everyone,
I'm so excited that there is a DVDMOD(thanks so much B-RAD) for the wdtv and I can't wait to start watching some 720p mkv files.
However, I am having trouble getting it set up properly and I am hoping that someone can offer some suggestions.
My Procedure:
1. copied the WDTV_FW_1_02_06_B-RAD.CC_DVDMOD-0.4.3 firmware to my usb flash drive in the root directory
2. plugged my flash drive into USB1 and a Logitech Powered USB hub into USB2.
3. Plugged my Samsung SE-S084B DVD Drive into the powered USB hub.
4. Turned the WD TV on and upgraded the firmware.
5. Turned the WD TV off, put a dvd with some avi files in the dvd drive and turned the WD TV back on.
Media library is turned on and scanning only happens for my usb flash drive. My dvd drive never seems to be scanned or even recognized. I know that my powered hub is working since I was able to watch stuff when a flash drive was connected to it.
Does anyone see why it isn't recognizing my dvd drive?
Thanks,
Taylour

Try a cold boot (cycle power) of the wdtv with everything connected AND a DVD inserted in your drive.
This helps for me if the drive is not recognized.

Sorry for the noob question. But I googled cold boot (aka hard boot, hard reboot, ...) and it sounds like it just means turning the power off and then back on again. Is this what you mean? I've already tried that many times, but I somehow doubt simply pressing the power button is what you mean.
Thanks,
Taylour

by the way if this does come out sometime and i update my wdtv with it. will i ever be able to revert back to the official firmware? is that possible with the current version??

sorry, it is not my native language...
I mean not pressing the power button, i mean disconnect and reconnect the power cord at the back of the WDTV.
nukraxE 05-20-09, 04:55 AM Hi b-rad!
Just to inform you that the DVDMOD-0.4.4 did not work for me. All previous version worked with my Samsung SE-S084B.
Did some troubleshooting and noticed that as long as my DVD Drive is plugged into the WDTV, upon booting it will hang at WDTV logo indefinately.
If I switch off and disconnect the DVD drive from the WDTV, switch it on (hard boot) again, the unit will boot normally. Plugging in the drive after booting does not help. WDTV will fail to see the drive.
I'm back to DVDMOD-0.4.3 for the time being.
Thanks.
I've read all posts here and did everything possible to have my WDTV working with a DVD drive without success. I've tried all DVDMod firmwares and also the last WDLXTV firmware version. I've tried with two different DVD drives: HP DVD940 External Lightscribe drive and a Sony SLIM DVD/CD rewritable drive model DRX=S70U that works fine with my ASUS e-1000 Netbook and a HP Laptop.
When I unplug and plug the power cord to WDTV with both a USB memory key (formated with HP pen drive formatter with FAT32 file system) and any of my DVD drives it hangs up on WDTV splash screen forever and it only power off if I unplug the power cord. When I boot with only a memory key or a HDD it works as expected. I've tried any combination among my USB HDD, DVD and memories key. Whenever the DVD drive is connected, WDTV hangs up on splash screen and if a plug it after the boot it didn't recognize the DVD drive. I aslo tried to do a System Reet thru the system menu without any results. I put the media library on and also off, browser mode to thumbnail of list mode and ALWAYS WDTV hangs up on the splash screen.
I'm very curious that these firmwares works only with generic DVD drives because HP and Sony should be very good brands and somehow they must be standards in this eletronic industry...
Anybody has any idea on what I could be doing, besides buying a generic DVD drive??
kebabinho 05-21-09, 04:55 AM Hi,
can you confirm with this that i can still buy a wireless adapter and use it aswell as this modded firmware.
Getting slightly confused.
With this you actually flash the firmware and then dont need the firmware on the usb stick (just an active HD plugged in) to get it to read DVD's?
With the wireless i have to have the firmware files (?) on the USB stick and point the media player to it by altering some file on it?
Thinking of buying one of these today
thanks

My Samsung Samsung SE-S084B was working fine prior to firmware 1.02.07. However with the 07, WDTV will hang at WDTV logo if the dvd drive is plugged in. Same symptoms as your except yours do not work on all the firmware?

I've tried all versions of DVDMOD and the last version of **WDLXTV-0.5.3.2 **
*** WDTV_FW_1_00_01_B-RAD.CC_DVDMOD-0.4.1 *** downloaded 420+ times!
*** WDTV_FW_1_01_02_B-RAD.CC_DVDMOD-0.4.1 *** downloaded 1600+ times!
*** WDTV_FW_1_02_07_B-RAD.CC_DVDMOD-0.4.4 *** downloaded 1000+ times!
All of them hangs up on the WDTV splash screen if a DVD drive is connected at hard boot time...

Hi. I have exactly the same problem. It all worked fine with two USB drives (1 DVD writer and 1 combo CD Writer/DVD player). With 1.02.07 - either WDLXTV or DVDMOD - it hangs at the WDTV logo. It checked many combinations.
Help! Do you know the difference in DVD handling between *** WDTV_FW_1_01_02_B-RAD.CC_DVDMOD-0.4.1 *** and *** WDTV_FW_1_02_07_B-RAD.CC_DVDMOD-0.4.4 *** ?

BigBoppa 06-01-09, 06:42 AM The WDLXTV-0.5.2 is the last one that works for me...
So try this one, at least it´s build up on the firmware 1.02.07...
shadinger 06-02-09, 04:48 PM Thanks a lot!
Indeed WDLXTV-0.5.2 works fine with my DVD player. Seems that something is broken on 0.5.3.2.
The WDLXTV-0.5.2 is the last one that works for me...
So try this one, at least it´s build up on the firmware 1.02.07...
:) Thanks for your tip !!!! It worked also for me... Something that is not good is I have to hard boot WDTV everytime I change the disk in the DVD drive. Is there some trick to avoid this??
Thanks again!!!
seven41 06-05-09, 10:07 AM I confirm that 1.02.07_DVDMOD-0.4.4 is broken.
Tried 3 different drives, nothing worked.
WDLXTV-0.5.2 works fine for me, using an external slim Sony USB multiformat DVDRW drive, ~2 years old.
I have the drive connected at cold boot. When returning to the home menu, then switching the inserted DVD, then going back to folders, WDTV shows the contents of the new DVD. Works fine.
Didn't try the newer WDLXTV because of failure reports from other users.
Thanks a lot for this firmware, I'm very happy to see DVD support !!!
Looking forward for a working DVDMOD release, as boot time of DVDMOD seems much shorter.
ruelmercado 06-10-09, 01:41 AM i have 1.02.08 beta now with my unit. can i issue the reset to factory settings first before i upgrade to WDLXTV-0.5.2?
hi evereyone
I just got my WDTV and I'am quite happy with it except for the dvd-rom (Samsung SE-S084B) not working with it.
here's my FW story:
installed official 1.02.07
then 1.02.07_DVDMOD-0.4.4 (as for everybody not working...)
then WDLXTV-0.5.2 that is supposed to be working.
but for me it doesn't, the WDTV reacts exactely the same that with the 1.02.07_DVDMOD-0.4.4.
my question is: did I have to do something (delete a file, reset or reboot the wdtv...) before installing WDLXTV-0.5.2 for it to work with DVD-Rom.
thanks
josslin 06-23-09, 01:23 PM My Pioneer DVR-X162 was not working fine prior to firmware 1.02.07(DVDMOD-0.4.4)
But Pioneer DVR-X162 was working fine prior to firmware WDLXTV-0.5.2 .
b-rad.cc 06-23-09, 09:36 PM hey guys. I am back, just been swamped with stuff since I arrived.
I have noticed that optical drive functionality is borked and I have fixed it in the new version I'm about to release;) Just finalizing something to (essentially) reenable hubs aka multiple devices per slot.

Thx for the 0.5.5 update. I though have a problem. When i try to load external srt subtitles and the mkv has internal subs then WDTV show only the internal subs selections. This happens only when trying to load an mkv from DVD-Rom (Plextor PX-116A2). From HDD works like the official fw aka with no problem...Is there a solution for this? Thx in advance

Yeah it's known problem that external subs do not appear to work when watching the file/movie from the DVD drive.
BigBoppa 06-30-09, 07:16 AM With the new 0.5.5 firmware only 1 of 3 harddisks after a hub and a switch is recognized. :(
With 0.5.2 everything is ok.
Most of my MKVs are stored on DVDs. So connecting EXT DVD ROM is very useful for me.
But many times the DVD may pause/skip a bit and then the screen turns green with garbled lines and it freezes.. I have tried the same DVDs using PCH and same DVD ROM and they may just skip a momentarily at the same scene and continue as normal.
So maybe I can conclude that WDTV is unable to normalize the movie in case there is some reading error/ skip in DVD.
Or can this be rectified through the DVD ROM supporting firmware?
B-Rad I would appreciate if you could find some time to look into this and comment.
Thanks!
PS I have tried 0.5.2, Now I am using 0.5.5

Same here.
Seems multiple drives on one USB port is not 100%. I have 2x Seagate Freeagent Desktop drives and when connecting them via a hub, only one is seen by the WDTV. Worked fine with previous firmware (official), so I know it's not somerthing specific to the HUB or drives.
darkmantra 07-09-09, 01:29 AM downloaded this latest firmware and test with my creative usb ext dv-writer unfortunately it doesnt detected the device.
ripper2860 07-09-09, 01:33 PM Looking to pickup an inexpensive external and would like to get 1 that works w/o the hassle of RMA's and restock fees. NewEgg always seems a good place once you know what you need.
Unit I'm considering: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106321
Anyone have any experience with this drive and WDTV w/ DVD-MOD or WDXLTV version 055? I borrowed a friend's Plextor and it worked (708UF), however, it is no longer available and is way too freaking large and I prefer a black drive and enclosure. Always had good luck with LiteOn, but that's on my PC's.
I'll consider any other recommendations and sources for "known to work" external drives. I've read here that the Samsung SE-S084x works, but reports state it is noisy. I would really prefer something that supports 16X read and it pretty quiet, but I'll live with 12x as it seemed to work fine (Plextor I borrowed only has 12x read and it worked fine).
Note: Lightscribe ability is a non-issue for me. Can live with or without it.
Thanks!!!
ripper2860 07-10-09, 12:44 PM Hmmm. No bites on my post above. Maybe I'm asking the wrong or an un-necessary question. So...
Does the WDXLTV 5.5 firmware support ANY usb attached external DVD-ROM drives? Seems there were compaibility issues previously, but maybe it really doesn't matter which drive as long as it supports 16x reads. The realease notes for 5.5 states USB DVD DRIVE SUPPORT (Fixed Finally) -- so does ""Fixed Finally" now open the door to any DVD-ROM drives???
V4Vagelis 07-11-09, 10:26 PM hello and congrats for the great work.
There is one thing that is bothering me. While i can play everything through my optical drive it seems to be impossible to fast forward or rewind the movie . Is this expected and if it is can it be fixed in a future release?
thank you again. for all your efforts
thaipascal 07-17-09, 12:00 PM Hello,
I'm a froggy living in Thailand (sorry for my english).
I just bought the WD HD TV and a DVD writer LG USB.
After put your firmware, it work! Great job!
Have some problem for eject the CD, but it's ok.
My real problem is with DVD-R have multi avi (series/seasons).
I have a lot of DVD like this (houndreds series).
It looks like can read firsts files (3 for a DVD with 11 episodes, 6 for a DVD with 22 episode) and not more far.
It mean cannot read far in the DVD, for all my DVD, same!
All the files inside are compatible.
The message is "Unable to play the selected file..."
If i take THIS file and put in USB key, it works!
I don't understand and anxious because i love series and have houndreds of DVD like this.
Thanks for a good news soon.
Pascal from Phuket
thaipascal 07-18-09, 11:16 AM My problem is apparently the same for all my DVDs.
When read a HD movie (mkv) burned on DVD, everything works perfectly and STOP after 20 to 30 minutes!
Same problem for my DVD video originals or not.
Same for my series burned on DVD.
READ PERFECTLY AND STOP.
The screen with the file name appears, no error prompt.
*Cannot rewind or forward with DVD reader.
Please help me. I think about the first week can give back everything.
Is it a DVD player problem?
Thanks
Pascal
BigBoppa 07-19-09, 04:30 AM *Cannot rewind or forward with DVD reader.
It might help to you:
I can rewind/forward, but only after pressing the reset button of the WDTV after inserting a new mkv-dvd (fw 0.5.2).
Is there a 100% combination of hardware/firmware that works?
I'm looking to buy an external DVD drive today, but want to pick one up that will definitely work with one of these firmware releases.
Is there a DVD drive out there that will definitely work with this mod ?
My drive options are:
Samsung 8x Slim External DVD Writer (SE-S084)
LG Slim Ultra External DVD-RW Drive (GP08LU10)
GXT 8X DVD±R/RW External Drive (GXT-DVRW-8X)
LG 20X Super Multi External DVD Rewriter (GE20)
??
It will be for playing DVDs with single MKV files or multiple DivX files.
If anyone has had good success with any of the models listed above, it would be great if you could let me know which one to get (and which version of this mod to use with it)
ps - if ANYONE has used an external bluray drive successfully with this mod, please let me know! I'll be switching over to blurays as soon as the blank media comes down in price, so it would be better to get one external bluray drive now instead of a DVD now and a bluray later.
deesarus 07-22-09, 11:10 PM B-Rad,
Firstly thanks so much for this awesome work.
This is my setup.
WDTV with WDlxTV firmware 0.5.5
I bought a lite-on internal Blu-ray drive with DVD-RW and have it connected to the WDTV.
This drive is a laptop-IDE burner enclosed in a generic enclosure. I have the USB cable running from the back of the enclosure to the WDTV on USB2 and an external hard-drive on the other port.
I am able to see the drive detected, and the m2ts files listed. But when I try playing them, I get no picture and no audio, just a blank screen and a message stating 'No Audio channel'.
Even a normal DVD doesn't play video or audio. I put in a movie dvd, and when I try playing the VOB file, it just shows a blank screen.
Any thoughts ?
I tried WDTV_FW_1_02_07_B-RAD.CC_DVDMOD-0.4.4 on my external DVD drive (internal LG in a cheap enclosure) and it did not work. It got stuck on the WDTV screen. With WDTV_FW_1_01_02_B-RAD.CC_DVDMOD-0.4.1, I managed to make it work but with limitations. Changing the disc means turning off and back on the dvd drive and reset the unit again. I was able though to play mkv files and even mts files which is great. Now I can play my camcorder HD footage saved on DVD media.

There will be external subtitle support in the future??
Every mkv files on my usb dvd has an external SRT file. And not available in the movie :(
cheers

Thanks!
kbear16673 12-27-09, 10:12 AM I used firmware 1.01.11_B-RAD.CC_WDLXTV_LIVE-0.3.2 to flash my DWTV Live. Now I can read DVD-ROM drives (provided I have another flash or hard drive connected to the other USB port).
The problem is, I can't eject the DVDs. The DVD eject button seems to be disabled by WDTV Live. I tried two different external USB 5'25" boxes, one with a Pioneer DVD-RW installed, and one with a Matchita DVD-ROM. Both behave the same way: eject button disabled.
The only way to eject the disk is to turn the DVD drive off and then back on again. However this disrupts the connection to the WDTV Live.
So to load a new disk in the DVD drive I have to turn both the WDTV Live and the DVD-ROM off.
If there is a way to work around this, please let me know.
P.S. A pleasant surprise is that WDTV Live was able to read data from a UDF-formatted DVD-R disk. From the description of the cd-manager-0.7 I thought it could only read ISO and HFS formatted disks. (Unless there is some compatibility layer in UDF disks that emulates ISO format).
vbmagus 06-03-10, 02:36 AM Tested HL-DT-ST BDDVDRW CT10L USB LIGHTSCRIBE DRIVE and it works fine. I've played MKVs on DVD-Rs with no problems. BD-R's are detected but when i select the folder where AVI's are located i get the 'no media on this device' error. Any Ideas?
petatester 07-16-10, 03:20 PM Hello. I'm from Spain, so pardon me for my english.
I have just read all this thread very interested. I have a WD TV HD first generation, and I have installed 0.4.4 firmware.
As any other, it hangs into first screen. Inmediately I have downgraded to 0.4.3 and worked fine.
I have tested with a pioneer dvr108 from my last pc installed into a hard drive enclosure using IDE to USB adapter and worked, and also with a LG GP08 lite drive.
I am still surprised because lots of people wrote that they use their dvd drives for reading their MKVs. 4,4GB mkvs? I download 16 to 36GB mkvs. I supose that everyone has their hard drives with Terabytes of them.
I have 20 BD50 disks with mkvs and I have to copy every movie to my 64GB pendrive or to an external hd to enjoy it with WD TV.
I have to thank to Brad.CC for his job, because people like him opens our eyes and lets us discover how things can be better done every day.
Thanks to everybody in this thread for colaborating, testing, discovering, and so on.
Thanks to vbmagus because he's the only one mentioning a BD drive.
Vbmagus, you dont say if you can read mkvs from BD, only avis. Have you tested it?
I suppose that a BD UDF disk is still not included into this mod. I hope it will someday....
I will try to get a SATA HD enclosure with usb, and if so, I will take apart my BD writer from my pc and I will test it with WD HD TV.
Bye.

sebzapata 03-02-11, 05:52 AM Hi, can you please help me.
I have a WDTV with DVDMOD-0.4.4 installed on it. When I boot it from the mains with just a USB memory stick attatched, it loads up a screen saying 'WD TV HD Media Player' with the WD logo, then the screen goes black and a new screeen with 'WDTV HD-X' comes up and then the WDTV interface comes up with the new wooden style background and I can watch videos of the memory stick fine.
I just bought an XBOX 360 HD-DVD drive and I powered of the WDTV, connected the HD-DVD player to the mains and conected the USB cable to the WDTV, I inserted a DVD with some video files on, connected an empty memory stick to the WDTV and I booted up the WDTV.
Now it just hangs at the very first screen and nothing happens.
Is there anything I should be doing differently?
Thanks

*Noob Alert*
I am planning to get a WDTV Live and use WDLXTV and DVDMOD on it. I have one question though.
Will the DVDs played through the connected external DVD player be upscaled? I am asking because this can avoid buying an upscaling DVD player.
TIA for any help.
