Ok, excuse my general ignorance on media sharing, I am completely new to it (but not computer illiterate, I am a computer programmer - just so you know what my general knowledge level is.)

Last night, I intalled Twonky on my macbook. I can see Twonky from my Yamaha RX-V3900 AVR. Files have some basic organization, and only music files show up. This is more or less what I expect, and my hat is off to Twonky for apparently being able to deal very will with an iTunes directory structure.

While reading, I learned about DLNA enable NAS devices. Pretty cool, I thought. I pulled out an old PC, fumbled around for a long time getting Free NAS to work, and bingo, I now have an old PC with a HD and it shows up on my AVR. Well worth my time.

However, there is one issue. It shows up as an dumb file hierachy. It's showing non music files, and has no organization.

So, do I not have it configured correctly, or the nice organization a Twonky trick, and short of being able to run Twonky on Free NAS, I am not going to get the Twonky behavior?

I am going to answer my own question, in case anyone else is curious. Free NAS is UpNp. As such, it seems to be a very simple media server option.

Twonky, on the other hand, is a more sophisticated DLNA media server program. It organizes your files more effectively than Free NAS, which presents them in their actual folder hierarchy. It also knows about iTunes play lists.
