View Full Version : Is a Faroudja DVP-1010 of Any Use to Me?

I'm fairly certain the answer is no, but I wanted to raise it up the flagpole.

Projector: Qualia 004 with 1080p60 input upgrade.

Video processing: Realta chip in Denon AVP-A1HDCI A/V Surround Processor. All my sources are fed through it.

Multiple Sony DVP-CX777ES DVD changers through Escient Controllers, all outputting 480i via component video.

TiVo Series 3 outputting native resolution of broadcast via HDMI.

Panasonic BD player outputting 1080p via HDMI.

Toshiba HD-A2 HD-DVD, outputting 1080i via HDMI.

I have an opportunity to get a great deal on a Faroudja DVP-1010, which was one of their later generation NRS series, although this unit has variable output resolutions (720p, 960p, 1080p). However, the 1080p is done by way of "cross-conversion," which, if I recall correctly, was the much maligned "bob and weave."

If anyone can see any advantage (or no advantage) to obtaining the Faroudja piece (which is NIB for a small price), please chime in.

Thanks,

Nick

Not really. While the 1010 was a very nice processor in it's time and it had solid 1080i film deinterlacing as one of the first machines on the market, I can't think of a single task where your Realta-eqipped Denon would not outperform it right on the spot. There's a chance you like the Faroudja 480i video processing from your TIVO, but the question is how many SD non-film programs you watch. Also the 1010 can't work with interlaced SD HDMI video.

There is probably a very good reason why the price is so small in 2009. ;)

I am fairly sure that the DVP-1010 did not deinterlace 1080i correctly, and that was the differentiator between the DVP-1010 and the DVP-1080 (hence the "1080" in the model name). The DVP-5000 which originally sold for $25K also deinterlaces 1080i correctly.
