Last picture for now. I am going with a 114" Carada 1.78 to 1 fixed frame. This is a photoshopped version of about how big I think the screen may be (pretty close).

My gear will be:

Projector: Panny PT-AE3000U

Speakers: 7.1 Axiom Audio with SVS Subwoofer

Reciever: Denon AVR-3808CI

DVD Player: Toshiba HD DVD Player and Playstation 3 for BluRay.

Paint the ceiling a darker color. It will improve the image on the screen. Paint the bottom of the soffit in the theater red to match the two wall sections it will draw less attention to the hidden beam.

My old house's theater set up (sold the entire theater system with the house - which is what really sold the house). So I get to upgrade the entire set up (though I saved my Denon reciever and Axiom Audio speakers for the new house - just used the old Onkyo reciever and Bose speakers in the setup that sold).

I was thinking about painting the ceiling the same black as on the front but wasn't sure. I am thinking about putting up chair-rail molding then some cool panel molding under it and then painting it white up to the chair rail.

Also thinking about extending the soffit around the back and on the other wall (everywhere except the front) then building out a little ledge in a "J" shape but shorter on the right side to hide a rope light in. Then put a piece of nice crown molding on the front of that (in front of the rope light). Like this:

I painted the ceiling black today and I am thinking about putting put some white crown molding and white chair railing with black below the chair rail, like this:

When I just have 4 of the can lights on, the room is pretty dark. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Flow, you've got a great looking room there, but I think BIG is right; while the White looks pretty good in your mock-ups, I would think it would tend to draw the eye when the lights are off and you want the room as dark as possible.

Usually the idea is to paint as much as Black as the wife will allow. OTOH, my wife doesn't give a damn what I do to the HT; I'm lucky...I think. :D

Seriously, I'd resist the temptation to do too much White. Just my .02.

Thanks for the advise CD! My dilemma is I REALLY don't want to have to paint the baseboard black because I would then have to paint he casing and doors black as well which the wife already said no to (sigh). She wasn't happy when I told her I painted the ceiling black today LOL.

Maybe I could paint the Crown Molding and Chair Rail a a medium to darker gold color?!?!?

Well why didn't you say so? No getting around the WAF my man. Do what ya gotta do. It'll still look great.

Do what I do, paint while she sleeps:D

j/k, the room is looking great. Can you paint the inside of the doors black, but leave the outside side white? Those doors are gonna be like a ghost staring at you in the dark room with the lights off.

+1. I too was originally going to paint the inside of my theater doors white but realized that they were way too bright, especially when just the movie was running. So I opted for a darker shade (faux cherry wood) on the inside but in fact have white on the outside to match the rest of the basement.

??? looking at the pics above all the trim and the doors outside the theater are black. It should have been reversed IMO. If anything your matching the HT to the rest of the basement. Gold is also a good option as is charcoal gray color, anything other than the white.

I would do no crown instead of white crown. I think your doors and baseboard should be black. I like gold for the crown, but that is my preference. You could do the baseboards gold to pass WAF but the white doors less than ideal. We will stop carping about it if its the way its gotta be ;).

If you go with crown, another option is to use it as the light tray for your rope light, and mount it along the bottom edge of the soffit. Like this:

My gosh, he's right isn't he! I'll bet all the money in my pockets that his wife has a problem with the whole red/black thing. The rest of the basement is tan, and tan/black is OK (also, an excellent drink!), but my wife...even though she let's me be...always says "I have trouble seeing the whole red/black thing"; I think that's wife-speak for red and black is very goomba. :D

Thanks everybody for the advise. Yes my wife hates all of the black. I was thinking about possibly making a curtain to hide the door when we watch movies but not sure. If it really sticks out as we watch movies, something will happen but mama says hell no to a black or red door.

I can say after paint the bottom 1/3 of the wall black today it looks pretty cool without any chair rail at all!

I think I have mama convinced that we should do a black door so I photoshopped that into the photo and added some carpet to it as well. I don't think she is gonna budge on the white trim (she needs some "light" in there - LOL).

Let's see. You don't want white. She doesn't want black. Hum. Sounds like Gray would be a wonderful compromise (and works nicely with the carpet).

Since she hates the black, I would paint it black. That way she will never want to go into YOUR room and you will have it all to yourself. Her room can be the laundry room, that is what I told my wife. (Be warned: really speaking to her like this may cause you to recieve a black eye, trust me.) :)

The carpet is not real, just photoshopped it in there (and I honestly can't remember what we picked for the room though I think that is pretty close).

Flow, the room is looking great man. My room has a similar color scheme (Burgundy & Black) and I too have the Panny AE3000u. I like you did not want to have to paint the baseboards so I left them white as well as the wall sockets, rear doors and light switches. I did however paint my ceiling black and if you can, I would highly recommend doing this since you have a dedicated theater. When the lights go out, my room gets very dark and all you see is the screen which is exactly what you want to happen.

Thanks! I did end up painting the ceiling black and this week I will be adding the crown molding and chair rail then I will get an updated photo on here that isn't photoshopped!

I got the crown and chair rail roughed in today but still have to go back to fill in the nail holes and paint it all smooth, but here are some updated photos in the mean time:

Looks really great. The one thing that keeps getting me, though, is this - under the soffits. You really should paint it black. My eyes keep shooting there.

Flow,
You said you were going with a 114" 16x9, but those mockups look like a 2.35:1. It could be just my eyes. But if you really want to know the size you might want to break out the blue painters tape.

Yeah, I changed my mind - going with the 2.35:1 screen instead. I measured it out pretty closely and that is about how big a 120" Carada 2.35:1 screen will be on the wall (9.5' x 4.25' screen on a 13.5' x 9' wall)

Nice, when I finally get to do my dedicated room, I want a 2.35 AT screen (probably 110" wide or so, rooms only about 10.5' X 17'). Always thought I wanted a 1.78, but the scope screens are sooooooo much cooler.

And after much debate over the issue in this thread, the white chair rail trim and crown molding are not a distraction what so ever when watch movies (thank goodness).
