View Full Version : Accessing Drive on WD TV -- transfer of files
wowitsmike 03-09-09, 10:58 AM Just got the WD TV and I can't seem to find the answer to my question so I started a new thread, sorry if this has been asked.
1. Updated Wd TV to the hacked firmware, its on a Fat partition on my 1TB drive.
2. Other partition on drive is NTFS.
3. Using Trendnet adaptor.
I loaded some files on the drive prior to hooking everything up and they play great.
I can see the drive on my computer, I can browse the drive and see all my files but it won't let me transfer/delete files to or from the WD TV.
What am I doing wrong?
Takenover83 03-09-09, 03:16 PM Transfer over the network to the WDTV onto a NTFS partition will be really slow. You are better off formatting that 2nd partition to ext2, and will see a speed gain. Also don't even bother with SMB. Just transfer via ftp.
wowitsmike 03-09-09, 03:32 PM the drive is acting like its write-protected...will i be able to get past this by ftping? or is there a default username/pass?
Takenover83 03-09-09, 03:59 PM For NTFS, you have to enter the directory that starts with a "." Atleast thats the way it used to be. Default name for ftp is "root", with no password.
wowitsmike 03-10-09, 12:35 AM update:
can see the drive and files through filezilla but cant delete/transfer...here's the error im getting
"550 Could not delete Unforgiven (blu-ray).mkv: Read-only file system"
i tried changing the user permissions through filezilla but to no avail
any ideas?
morning update:
played around with ext2 and ext3 partitions, wd tv cant see/play media when using those partition types...weird...going to try ntfs again
can anyone point me to the right directory for files? i found mine in "tmp"
wowitsmike 03-10-09, 02:18 PM holy crap, i think i got it to work...but on ntfs and the transfers are PAINFULLY slow...now im tempted to try ext2/ext3 again but then again it took me three days to get to this point and maybe i'll just be happy with what i got...its a conundrum
wowitsmike 03-10-09, 03:56 PM afternoon update:
Im going to keep updating this thread cause i figure it might provide some insight to other XP users who are laymen, like me
First, my stats:
1. XP Pro (home machine)
2. WD TV, USB hub on USB 2 with pen drive (firmware) and trendnet adaptor; 1TB drive formatted as NTFS on USB 1
Was able to access the WD TV using filezilla...directory tree showed two versions of my attached drive, one writable, one not
My files were located on the writable drive so I deleted one and transfered over another...according to filezilla, everything went smooth but when I checked the WDTV, nothing had changed
I had to go to work so I dont know if the WDTV had to re-index the drive or not...in my mind, the file had to go somewhere...if someone could shed some light on this, it would be much appreciated
thanks
mike
Takenover83 03-10-09, 07:33 PM Try turning the Media library off, and just viewing via Folder view. I upload via ftp all the time, and the files are immediately available after the upload is finished.
wowitsmike 03-10-09, 08:02 PM how do i do that?
Takenover83 03-10-09, 08:21 PM Its in the options somewhere. Sorry can't get to specific, as my kiddo's are watchn the tube.
wowitsmike 03-11-09, 01:15 AM Awesome! That was the trick....
when i turned off the library, everything I had done showed up, fantastic!
thanks for the insight takenover, transferring and happy!
Takenover83 03-11-09, 02:03 AM Glad, I could help.
Wowitsmike, what kind of transfer speed are you getting from PC to WDTV/HDD? Is the HDD formated as NTSF or ext2? I am getting about 500 kbs using NTSF. I have not had the chance to format to ext2 yet.
Takenover83, I know that you have the HDD formated to ext2. What kind of speed are you getting from PC to WDTV/HDD
Thanks
FCBarca 03-11-09, 01:32 PM So, am I to understand that the preferred (Speed) formatting for an external USB HD for the WDTV is in Ext2/3 rather than NTFS?

I get almost 4 Megs a second over ftp, which is not to bad. I also was getting around 500ish kbs when my drive was ntfs.
wowitsmike 03-11-09, 02:32 PM im getting around 500kbps...rather slow but it took me so much damn time to figure this out im hesitant to turn back the clock and try ext2...the first time i tried ext2 i couldnt get my pc to see the drive (and i have the ext2/3 drivers loaded) and the wdtv couldnt see it either
if someone wants to add some insight, im all ears
Good news. I formated my HDD as ext2 and I am getting about 3000 kbps.
Does anyone know how to map the WDTV HDD in Windows XP? I tried with the WDTV IP address and I got as far as the log in screen but it would not take username:root with no password. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
