DISHPVR508 -usable as a replacement unit for a DuoDVR™625?

Gentlemen /Ladies,

My father has Dish, system comprised of two Solo 311 ???? receivers, plus a SD recording PVR. DuoDVR™625. Total units in household (3)

Recently they dropped the service contract? on their equipment to save a few bucks.

My question is this:

Can a used, second hand PVR such as the DISHPVR508 be used as a stop-gap replacement in case the main PVR dies ?

2nd Questions: Is it possible to just swap access cards and be good to go on used equipment?

PS: I know due to the AGE of the DISHPVR508 it may not have all the features- Just wanting to know if I should give it to them as a back-up... Or strip the hard-drive out of it to use for other purposes and junk the rest...

They could swap in the 508 in place of the 625. but it will be a single tuner only

You cannot swap cards between receivers.

You will need to release the 508 from your account so they can add it to their's.

Scooper,

Just to clarify:

1: I do not have a Dish account.
2: Unit was part of a "lot" of other items I had purchased (furniture mainly) that had been written off by insurance company and was being sold to re-coup funds paid out to insured party.
(So far as a receipt- Cash sale..No receipt.)

3: History of unit... I got it from a person who has a business of doing "Fire/Water-damage clean-Up" after a fire has occurred.

What they do is remove items after a fire has occurred- so property can be cleaned up/re-furbished... Some items being cleaned up enough that the owner wants them back, other items the owners don't want back. Part of this is he has a deal with the insurance company authorizing him to sell off items they have "written-off.

Any further thoughts you may have would be appreciated. Unit appears to be operational- Don't have a Dish "dish" to hook it up to- but it appears that it does pass all diagnostic tests, Menus appear, hear HD spin up /run, etc..

On calling Dish... Was hoping that with a valid access card that would be good-enough- but it sounds like Dish "marries" the card to the receiver. My concern on calling Dish is that they retain ownership of units no matter what the age (this is like a 2002 model?) and that they would want it "back"...
(They are more than welcome to it, but they will have to pay a crating/ boxing /shipping and handling, and a finder's-fee @$$$ per hour :-)

Is there a way when calling Dish (without a account anonymously ) to verify a clear-title so to speak, for them to verify that unit could be swapped?

Yes - you'll need the R00 and S00 numbers from the reciever and the card. Dishcustomer service should be able to tell you if there are any outstanding charges on it (which will have to be paid for first).

Only the "leased" units would possibly have to be returned. I don't know about one like you "obtained".
