View Full Version : new home theater build : Toy Matinee
daniel@burst 03-09-09, 11:48 PM So I've been lurking for a while and finally decided to join the forums... there's so much good advice and so many friendly people, I wanted to be part of it as I start the design for my new home theater.
By way of introduction, my name is Daniel. I designed my recording studio called Burst HQ (http://www.bursthq.com) in Milwaukee, WI... it's located in the original Post Office building in the Wauwatosa Village.
I am just about to start the finishing stages of our new home construction in Jackson, WI, and have a space set aside in the basement for a dedicated theater (a longtime dream of mine).
I figured I'd start a thread here from the very beginning stages of this project, as I have a basic idea of what I want and how it might lay out, but seeing how helpful everyone is around here I thought it would make sense to upload some pics and sketches and solicit some input.
Thinking of naming the space Toy Matinee (after one of my favorite bands).
So the next few posts will have some pictures, and I'll prolly include a post with some explanation.
daniel@burst 03-09-09, 11:51 PM Here's the general layout with the main dimensions (letters and arrows refer to photos taken from these locations... uploads to follow) :

15' x 20' is a great start
daniel@burst 03-09-09, 11:59 PM @osofast240sx :
thx, man... tho I'm already lost on here! Trying to include images in the post without luck so far.
EDIT : okay, I think I'm getting the hang of the [IMG] thing... we'll see.

daniel@burst 03-10-09, 12:28 AM So, as you can see in the pics, we have a lot of concrete. 5 sides of the future theater are all (or almost all) concrete - floor, two exterior walls, one interior wall (next to stairs coming down from first floor), and the floor above has concrete as well (we're doing in-floor/radiant heat in this house).
Speaking of the in-floor heat, we have it in the theater. It is on a it's own separate manifold valve, so we can (hopefully!) regulate the amount of warm liquid being fed to the tubes under the theater itself. The basement is on a separate temperature zone from the rest of the house.
That leaves two walls to deal with in a major way with regard to acoustic treatment... the small 3' 9.5" opening in the left hand/stairway wall, and the entire wall at the bottom of the drawing (which is a 2x4 support wall and can't be moved).
We also poured a separate slab of concrete for this room, meaning there is little physical connection where the proposed entry comes through the concrete wall (upper left) and where the 2x4 wall runs across the bottom of the drawing. We ran a double layer of edging felt (??) in these seams, I guess... not sure of the technical description, I just asked the concrete crew to do it the day the showed up thinking it would be a good idea.
Some notes :
I do hope to have an acoustically transparent screen, with speakers behind that can be seen with a hidden lighting fixture (I've liked that feature quite a bit in some of the other designs I've seen on here).
I don't own any of the gear yet... definitely gathering opinions and starting from scratch with regard to matching the equipment to this new room of ours.
The theater will be mainly used for watching movies, and keeping the sound in the room is an obvious priority (though I think we've helped ourselves with the extensive use of concrete and the room's location - it's under my office and the kitchen, our master suite is on the other end of the house, and the kids' rooms are the 2nd floor).
I'll post a quickie mockup of my initial ideas for the room, but it's just my first approach... I am realizing as I review the forums here at AVS that I should have made the opening for the entry a bit further off the (proposed) front concrete wall, so I could come into the room a few feet in front of the screen instead of right next to it... so that's my first challenge, it appears : basic room layout.
daniel@burst 03-10-09, 12:29 AM Here's my first general layout idea (I'm way open to suggestions and ideas) :
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=136150&stc=1&d=1236659324
I would put the door in the back of the theater.
daniel@burst 03-10-09, 12:53 AM I would put the door in the back of the theater.
Do you mean flip the orientation of the elements I've drawn inside the room, so that the door stays where it is now but the layout is upside down (opposite/mirrored vertically)?
Yes flip it and put the screen on the other wall. you could build the rack either under the stairs or out facing the bar area with TV's hooked into the system so they play along with the theater.
Did you put radiant heat in the basement also I noticed the concrete is up above the bottom of the stud wall bottom plates. So are you stuck with the layout as it is? Would have been nice to have the door where your proposed bar area is

Ah, ok. I'll flip it around in Photoshop and play with that idea... thanks!
Yeah, the wall stays where it is... but we could header it out I suppose and put a door in that wall. That might work.
Daniel
:) You will get a ton of input thats going to make your head spin. I changed my design a few times to and ended up tearing some walls out :p I think it was for the better as I really like my layout. My room is about 4 feet deeper but pretty much the same as your space. Scan through my thread a bit and get some ideas.
I just checked out Burst HQ I love the colors you used vary inviting I'm sure it gets the musical juices flowing

Well, I'm here for opinions other than my own, so that kind of input is welcomed!
I did scan through your thread... and about a few dozen others. So many great ideas.
Thanks for the kind words on my studio... definitely a labor of love, and we get compliments all the time that it's incredibly comfortable to work in and create music in. The exterior colors of the new house are similar, and I have to do something different in this new theater or else everything in my life will be olive green and orange!

2.40 I think makes the most sense, in terms of top flight picture and future use... right?
Yep almost all the new bluray releases are 2.40 - 2.35 format. you should start thinking of what projector your going to use so you can figure screen size - throw ratio - seating distance. here's a link to projector central. I think this is going to be my next upgrade. You can plug in some numbers http://www.projectorcentral.com/Panasonic-PT-AE3000-projection-calculator-pro.htm
whiskey alpha 03-10-09, 11:35 AM I like the movies/wine storage. I think the first BD should be Sideways...a movie about wine..

Thanks, whiskey alpha!
Nice idea on Sideways... maybe the poster? I know we want a rather large b&w reclining Hepburn image at the base of the stairs, and a popcorn machine somewhere.
whiskey alpha 03-10-09, 02:39 PM One tip. If you are thinking about a popcorn machine you might also think about putting an exhaust fan above it. I wish I had put one over mine, although I have not had any problems, if would be something I would do if I had to do it over again.
Also I agree with W00lly about the setup. Are you going to run a riser for the second row. If so you have to think about the width and the path needed to get by it so you can get the first row.

Oh man oh man... I'm gonna need some help on this one. I didn't even think about the projector yet, just that I want a quality one (and ideally Sony, since I get a steep discount on anything Sony brand).
And, yes, 2.40 makes sense to me.
And the room will have total darkness available, but my fiancé loves her some candles... so half the time there will be candles burning. Until she falls asleep halfway through Michael Mann's Heat... again.

Agreed on the exhaust... might make sense to have it near the future bar anyway, for that very reason. And there will be ductwork in the area for the equipment rack, I imagine.
On the setup, I was thinking a 2nd row riser, yes.
I was also considering just one row of seats, with beanbags that move about for the kiddos. If we did this I'd want at least four actual seats, of course. Still debating the 2nd row, I guess. My thinking on keeping a bit more floor space available is the ability to use this sound proof room for simple recording (as my office is directly above, and I'm a music producer by trade). Having some space available in front of the recliners would mean I could record simple instruments or vocalists in a really nice acoustically treated space - and write off the acoustic treatments for tax purposes. :)
All I can say is to dig into the Projector threads and read and ask questions there many members hang there too and can give you the help you will need to make the right projector pick :)

BeerParty 03-10-09, 03:17 PM Daniel,
How accessible do you want the bar from the theater? The way you have it now, the bar and the theater are two completely separate spaces (you have to walk around the stairs to go from one to the other). If you will be putting a popcorn machine and other theater related stuff in the bar area, you will want the two areas to be integrated a little better. I don't know how much space you have by the 'movies and wine storage', but is there enough room there for the bar?
Another option would be to go back to your original layout, close off the space between the foot of the stairs and the theater, and put in a door between the bar and the theater.

Thanks for weighing in, Chris.
Yes, was pondering this while typing those earlier posts, too... I agree that having the two spaces be a bit integrated makes sense, so I am liking the idea of having the entrance to the theater by the bar.
Overall, I do want the theater completely closed off, keeping the bar as it's own separate space. If the entrance to the theater were closer to the business end of the bar area, it may make some sense. Definitely weighing that option.
whiskey alpha 03-10-09, 04:09 PM candles=bad. A lot of soot.
As far as the PJ goes. Try the sony pearl series. I t depends upon how much you want to wrap up in it.
Also, It looks like you will have some space in the theater udner the stairs for some built in.

I'm reminded of a scene in As Good As It Gets, when Melvin Udall is asked by an enamored secretary how he writes women so well... he responds "first I think of a man, then I remove accountability and reason."
The fiancé digs candles, not much logic can do to help.

I'll check into it, thanks.

Well, the big problem there is the concrete wall between the stairs and theater... which is great for keeping things tight and sound proof, but not so good when doing built-ins! I think I'll have to keep the built-ins confined to the wall between the future bar and theater, or internal to the theater space.

Yeah, that makes sense... but I am finding that there are some decisions that need to be made fairly early with regard to the placement of items/gear and layout of the room.
With that in mind, based on the prelim research I've done, I pretty interested in :
• a high-end Sony projector, 1080p
• probably add an A-lens, but it might make sense to wait on this til after reviewing the zoom capabilities of the projector... right?
• works well with an AT screen (still researching differences, but I know I want my front speakers behind the screen)
• CIH (constant image height?) screen... not sure how that affects projector selection yet
daniel@burst 03-16-09, 12:51 AM Okay, I'm liking the idea of entering from the rear of the room, and with that in mind I'm playing with two layout options for the actual entrance and equipment rack (both of these current layout ideas account for the future bar area, and having a flatscreen above the corner for simulcasting sporting events, etc.).
Idea #3 has an entry hallway of sorts, with an equipment rack along the way to the theater itself (a la this post (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=9485798#post9485798) by Art Sonneborn from the Show Me Your Rack thread).
Here's a crude mockup of this idea (green blocks are seating areas, the beige block is a raised platform for the 2nd row) :
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=136885&stc=1&d=1237178965
daniel@burst 03-16-09, 12:55 AM And here's Idea #4, with a door to the theater next to the bar (no sep. hallway), but an equipment room that is incorporated into the back side of the bar cabinets and future flatscreen mount... if that makes sense.
I think this idea keeps the inside of the theater room more symmetrical (with the entry door and equipment door opposite each other along the back wall), but Idea #3 has a bit more dramatic entry.
mockup for Idea #4 :

How tall is this wall Daniel. Is it a 9' wall
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=136885&stc=1&d=1237178965[/
If it is 9' in this layout you could build a step platform so when you enter your component theater hallway you step up so then when you enter the theater you could just walk onto the riser and have steps going down on the sides into the front
like Collin's theater and then do a stage and screen wall which look a bit like mine :)
http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp356/CollinViegas/Theater/BackView.jpg
http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp356/CollinViegas/Theater/FrontView.jpg
dc_pilgrim 03-16-09, 09:37 AM If you put a door by the rack, #3 would have some nice sound isolation potential. By essentially creating an airlock, you limit the damage that a door can do to your isolation efforts. Not sure if that is a design priority or not?

Most pj's will work with a lens (and AT screen) - but some work better. Of note, some have aspect ratio controls built in that will eliminate the need for a scaler to manipulate the image before the lens distort it.
Also, a bane to me, it seems that a longer throw with less zoom is beneficial. Read the CIH FAQ at that forum.
daniel@burst 03-16-09, 08:44 PM http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=136146&stc=1&d=1236658285

Well, the height throughout the basement currently is the 8' 7" noted on the drawings... this wall, too... so, not quite 9'. But I love this idea and was thinking of incorporating it even when the room was laid out in reverse (the original plan).
I'm definitely going to explore this further... thanks, Scott!
daniel@burst 03-16-09, 08:50 PM If you put a door by the rack, #3 would have some nice sound isolation potential. By essentially creating an airlock, you limit the damage that a door can do to your isolation efforts. Not sure if that is a design priority or not?
Well, that's the thought... yes. Not sure if I want to walk back out to the entry to make adjustments, though. I guess I need to weigh the benefits of access versus sound isolation.
daniel@burst 03-19-09, 07:38 PM Okay, been playing around with the layout in SketchUp, and while I'm not thrilled with my proficiency in SketchUp I am quite liking the new layout idea (which I think I owe to Scott for his suggestion to flip the room orientation... thanks, mate!).
The original entry at the base of the stairs has become a nice access point for getting behind the screen for wiring and any maintenance, and I like the idea of having a bit more showy entry next to the future bar, with a lit marquee of some kind (shown as a simple curve on these sketches).
The idea behind the entry is that we'd have the actual theater door at the back of a small overhang/walkway/entry hall with some great lighting and the equipment rack flush mounted in this hallway (with some lighting and a glass door). This placement gives me a really nice back room space under the stairs and allows for some pretty easy ventilation... and keeps all that noise outside of my solid core door. I don't see any downside to this... am I wrong?
It might not be obvious, but there would be walls built around the equipment rack to form this closet under the stairs... not included here... just trying to keep things simple for now, so please forgive the lack of detail... I want to get the general layout and space planning right before digging in to specifics.

Maybe instead of having the rack in the hallway you could build a media room with all your equipment - DVD staorage - HTPC somthing like Indygreg's media room behind the Big Red Theater (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=869753). But alot larger. you could also have a large TV with some seating in this area also so that you could watch whats playing in the theater :)

Agreed, that would be a show piece... not sure how it fits in the area of which you included one of my earlier (empty basement) pics. That's looking into the underside of the stairs and the (future) hallway adjacent.
Maybe expanding the entry area to the theater, and moving the bar away from the theater a bit... might work. More to think about... gee, thanks Scott!

Maybe instead of having the rack in the hallway you could build a media room with all your equipment - DVD staorage - HTPC somthing like Indygreg's media room behind the Big Red Theater (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=869753).

I have always loved this idea, and definitely have designs on it for v2.0. Like my own little AV Room/Projection Booth.

Hi Daniel, I thought I'd stop by to see what you are up to... What a nice clean space you have to work with. I must say that I definitely like the rear entrance hallway with equipment closet to the side. Not only does this allow you to make a cool entrance, but it also gives you some interesting options for sound isolation. I'm imagining the pre-movie drinks sitting at the bar waiting for the movie doors to open!... I'm putting in interconnecting doors in my theater but its quite a squeeze and my bar is on the floor above so the movie entrance is out of site. Anyway I'll be following your build. Good luck.
I wish now that we would have spent the extra cash and had our basement spray foamed around the top of the foundation. I sealed all mine up pretty good but the foam gets into every little crack and makes for a nice warm basement in the winter time :)

Thanks for stopping by and for the kind words, Moggie!
I'm definitely looking forward to moving ahead, hoping for later this fall/winter as a project after we're moved into this new house.
I'm really happy I listened to Scott's (W00lly) advice and reoriented the room so the entrance is at the rear. I wish we had just a touch more ceiling height so we could enter with the door height at the elevation of the top riser (allowing for a riser to span the whole rear wall of the theater), but I'm pretty confident we'll end up with a layout and design that is pretty sweet.
Thanks again for checking in... I'm learning all kinds of stuff from you thread and everyone else on here. Such a great hang.

I'm thrilled so far, and there's no operational heat in the house yet (this week, fingers crossed). I think the combo of in-floor radiant heat with a really tight (foam) insulation package will mean good things for the environment down there.
We got lucky by having the insulation installer 'screw up' and foam between our sunroom upstairs and the theater (this wall is not exterior, so we hadn't paid for foam there). Hopefully it helps seal things up along that axis, where I had been planning on stuffing some loose fiberglass when we start framing the theater later this year. Well, there's one thing that came in as a nice surprise and under budget... those are few and far between, as you know!

We finally got our concrete floors poured on the main level today... been too cold for the past three weeks. Still looking at moving in near the end of June (fingers crossed!).
We do have quite a few more mechanicals set in the basement (where the theater will be) and I've got a couple of pics. I'm waiting to clear out the theater space so I can update this project thread with some measurements and visuals for the soffits I'm going to have to deal with. Not sure I'm happy about that, but I am glad we went with 9' ceilings in our basement!
More soon...
