View Full Version : Mac to HDTV set
Hi,
Sorry if this has been discussed already.
I am trying to play quicktime/video content from my Mac to my Pioneer 151 display.
Can I do this through Ethernet connection? If not, what would you recommend?
My HDTV set is on a different room, so I will need a long cable to hook it up.
I like AppleTV but it seems to have too many restrictions from Apple. I also heard about the wdtv media player.
I am just wondering if there is a way to skip buying another device if I can play it straight from my Mac.
Thanks for any feedback.

Gugy, kind of a confusing question; I think you have 2 things going on at once. To display video on your HDTV from the Mac, you would likely use a DVI cable. Now, if your Mac is in another room, you're not really going to want to run a long DVI cable, through walls and such, to accomplish what you want. If you want to keep the Mac where it is, you've got a tough road ahead of you. What you'd want to do is move the Mac to where it's local to the HDTV, connect it using the DVI cable, and then keep the Mac on your network with a run of Ethernet cable.
Of course, if the Mac is also your main PC, you likely won't want it in the room with the HDTV...in which case you're either looking at a second Mac, or the ATV. Hope that helps.

CDLehner,
Thanks.
Yes my Mac is my main computer. I was just wondering if I could send video through an Ethernet cable or any other cable(DVI). But like you said it's like 40 feet from my computer location to my HDTV so I guess is not feasible.
It seems then my best options are the wdtv media player, so I can upload my media easily to a hard drive then connect to it or AppleTV if I want to stream video.

Well...technically I guess you could use an DVI/HDMI converter on the back of your Mac, and then use an HDMI extender, using Cat5/6, to run to your HDTV. But I don't know if that solution would definitely work, what the PQ is likely to be, or what the expense might be. Yes, better to try another product locally at the set.

FCBarca 03-11-09, 01:27 PM To follow up on that theme, I originally tried to play some video content from my Macbook on my HDTV but was only partially successful.
I have a DVI/HDMI adapter that goes into the TV but for some reason audio isn't going along with it.
Any ideas on that?

I'm no expert, but I didn't think DVI carried audio. If you go DVI to HDMI from a Mac, don't you have to use the optical out for audio?

FCBarca 03-11-09, 01:36 PM I figured that was part of the problem but even with an audio cord to output from the macbook to the audio hack on the plasma, no sound...I figure I must be doing something wrong

Could be lots of things FCB; setting the digital out on the Mac, setting the digital in on the TV...your files, etc., etc. Best bet is to probably take it one piece at a time, and search for that issue. For example, start with "how to output digital audio from my Macbook to TV". If that doesn't seem to produce a result, "how to receive digital audio input to my TV", etc.
If you get both of those set, but still no audio from your ripped files, try a control file that you know works; if that produces audio, but your ripped file won't...then it has to do with your file. You're just going to have to work it, but I'm not sure we're experts enough on Mac, and your TV set, to be able to offer much specific advice. Hope that helps...good luck.
