I have jus purchased a WDTV and WD hard drive I want the main use to be watching DVDs and Blu-Rays, but as I am very new to this I have a few questions that I cant find answers to from the other threads.

1. What is the best way to copy from DVD and Blu-Ray to my hard drive? (I have just been using DVD43 to decode and then copying the video_ts file through windows, but all the files in the video_ts folder show up when I go to the WDTV videos screen, is this suppose to happen?)

2. How do I add thumbnail cover art of both the films and music albums I have instead of a standard folder picture?

Sorry if these questions have been asked and answered before.

Thanks.

Hi, your better off putting your question in the "*New* Western Digital - WD TV HD Media Player " thread

but...
1) I use DVD Shrink and chance the preferences to (not split vob into 1gb chunks) then i rip the movie only to a single VOB file directly to the USB drive, then rename the VTS.VOB file to say Monsters Inc.VOB, there will also be the .BUP and .IFO files but they are not visible in WD TV so no concern.

2) Thumbnail covers are only viewable with .MP4 files, google for prohrams to add them, but you can only do it to audio and .MP4 video files

Just wondering. If you already have the Blue ray/DVD media, then why not just buy the Blure ray player and watch it on it.

Thanks perfectdark.

I have another question, when I turn my unit on at the mains it automatically turns on rather then waiting for me to turn the machine on using the remote, is this supposed to happen or am I doing something wrong? (I have tried ejecting the usb before turned the unit off, then after turning the mains power off then on again it just starts up)

Thanks.

indusbreed - why bother swapping discs, having to sit through countless company logos and promos for other titles.

guccipromo - MakeMKV (http://www.makemkv.com/) I find is the easiest way to go it works on DVD's and Blu-rays and will rip both to an MKV file and convert the Blu-ray audio to AC3 if needed to improve compatibility. It also reads the chapters from the original disc and adds them into the MKV.

The video is left unaltered however it appears VC-1 encoded Blu-ray movies in MKV do not work with the WDTV only MPEG-2/H.264 with the current firmware.

The auto power on when switching off/on at the mains is something I've seen as well.

No it only works on DVD/Blu-ray.

Just use MKVmerge (http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MKVtoolnix) to demux the audio, then use eac3to (http://www.videohelp.com/tools/eac3to) + GUI (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=135095) to convert the audio into AC3.

Then add the AC3 audio plus the original MKV into MKVMerge and untick the audio track you don't want and it will mux a new MKV containing the video and AC3 track.

There is a guide for using another program here (http://audioconverter.heartware.dk/Tutorial/) to convert the audio into AC3.

User PopcornHour Audio Converter to convert DTS to AC3.
