View Full Version : My Monster Optical Cable Sounds Better On My PS3 Than HDMI
i actually noticed this with my 360. i'm not trying to hype monster either, just to be clear.(i've tested and got the same results with other optical cables i bought from radioshack)dts master hd, dolby true hd, etc...they just don't just don't sound very good through hdmi on my polk satelite speakers. i suppose if i had more expensive speakers that were bigger and better, i would see more of a difference. the sound quality of my blurays and games(killzone 2 and mlb09 especially mlb09)was just flat out better through optical. both games came up as dts on the receiver and i was just blown away
ballen420 03-11-09, 10:38 AM I don't know about that. You can't output DTSHD or Dolby True HD through optical on the PS3. Sounds like an illusion to me.
Killzone 2 is 7.1 channel PCM, so it sounds like you're getting the 5.1 DTS signal through optical. No clue about MLB 09.

nobody said dtshd or dolby trueHD lol
i said dts:)

I guess I had a hard time decoding your post. You clearly listed those in there, though I really had no idea what you were trying to say.

then why post? lol:p
i understand, no problem
ballen420 03-11-09, 10:48 AM then why post? lol:p
Good question. lol. :):confused::eek::mad::rolleyes::cool::p;):D:o:(
Next time a post makes absolutely no sense, I'll ignore. Thanks for the advice.
cdhender 03-11-09, 06:50 PM Something is definitely wrong. There is no comparison with my ps3 when it comes to optical vs HDMI.
mave198 03-11-09, 06:53 PM Troll thread.
Especially the fact that you claim garbage Monster Cable sounds better than your HDMI cable.
Guinn3sS 03-11-09, 07:11 PM I don't know how accurate this is. I've had optical cables hooked up to my receiver for a long time and I recently got an HD receiver that allowed me to use HDMI cables and man it sounds so much better, even with my speakers that aren't the top of the line.
Also, I don't use Monster Cables but from what I've read they are nothing special.
Troll thread.

two of my hdmi cables are monster:)
it does sound better...i have two generic optical cables that are better than the hdmi too:)
steven975 03-11-09, 11:03 PM I'll give it to you that they sound louder. Also, the dolby/DTS decoded in your receiver may give levels that you prefer.
Quantitatively speaking, it is impossible for optical to sound better than HDMI, though, at least after you configure everything to where the differences in levels are adjusted.
like.no.other. 03-11-09, 11:22 PM Maybe he prefers the lower dynamic range of the lossy codecs. It has nothing to do with
cables. DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD are more quiet than DTS or Dolby Digital due to the
fact it has wider dynamic range. It's an acquired taste to be honest. But you'll get cleaner
and better sonic information through DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD.
imdjenk 03-11-09, 11:41 PM Last two posters on the money. Louder and post processed on receiver = better to untrained ear.
Analogy: My wifes car has MTX subs in a ported box for loud boomy loose bass. My car has Fosgate Power DVC in a sealed box for tighter punchier bass. Everyone thinks her system sounds better. Oh well, guess everybody likes hip hop better.
confidenceman 03-12-09, 02:33 AM Yeah. :)
You're probably just confusing "loudness" for "sounding better." :)
But I really don't understand your original post. :)
You say you discovered this on your 360? :) That doesn't make any sense. You get identical sound over HDMI as over optical on a 360. :)
Also, you say that the games are coming up as DTS on your receiver. You're missing the higher quality codecs if you're seeing the DTS indicator on your receiver for both optical and HDMI. Either it's a loudness issue, a post-processing issue, or a receiver issue. :p
KingShorty 03-12-09, 03:12 AM optical > hdmi ?
Someone must be smoking something!
ninjachicken 03-12-09, 03:23 AM Optical > HDMI...that's a myth.
The fact you noticed this with 360 gives it away too, the 360's HDMI implementation isn't the same as the PS3's, you can't achieve lossless with it.
Optical > HDMI isn't just a Myth, it's a fallacy.

even though i have no idea what the hell most of that means, probably lol
like i said, i think my speakers play a part in it too. they're just some basic polk audio satelites.(nothing special) also through hdmi, my onkyo txr606 picks the ps3 and the 360 both up as pcm.(even if i bitstream on ps3) my panasonic bd35 DID NOT do this. if a movie was dts master hd or dolbytruehd, it would show that on the receiver...not with the ps3 or 360 though
i just find that for my basic speaker setup, optical is the better option. it's not a "myth"...just what i prefer:)
ditch-digger 03-12-09, 07:42 AM way to many lol for me to take anything serious....
i own the 606, and i really dont know what you are doing, but whatever it is, its wrong. and the ps3 decodes, so you must send the audio via lpcm to the ps3 to get multichannel...

then why doesn't it show up on the receiver? why does it say multichannel? my bd35 did not do this...again:mad:

Because the PS3 is doing the decoding and all the AVR is seeing is LPCM. If the PS3 didnt do the decoding and sent the info to the AVR THEN you would see the little DTS or TruHD light come on the AVR indicating that it is doing the decoding of that particular Signal. The BD35 sent the audio track UNdecdoded to the AVR and let the AVR do the decoding the PS3 cannot do this with HD audio tracks.
This subject along with the "LOUDNESS" factor has been beaten to death around here. You are confusing LOUDER with Better.
bassmonkeee 03-12-09, 08:35 AM I also own the Onkyo 606, and I also have Polk speakers (next component to be upgraded) and the HDMI definitely sounds fuller than the lossy over optical.
The lossy over optical sounded louder at the same volume setting, but once you account for that, it's impossible not to hear the difference.

it could be, i'm not really sure
i actually did a couple of tests. sleeping beauty and the dark knight seemed pretty low through hdmi. i found myself turning up the volume everytime that i watched. i like to keep the volume on 32 for the the setup that i have. through optical, tdk and sleeping beauty seemed fine. not only did they seem "LOUDER" but a bit more clear as well...i don't know people...just my thoughts on it
imdjenk 03-12-09, 08:57 AM You should get this:

I can't even imagine how good your xbox will sound after this upgrade.

lol with this speaker setup, not much of a difference i'm sure

Well you like what you like. More power to ya! ;)
confidenceman 03-12-09, 01:17 PM Important question: what speaker setup are you using?! You've mentioned you have Polk satellites, but you haven't said how many. Do you have a 2-channel setup, a 2.1 setup, a 4-channel setup, a 5.1 setup, a 6.1 setup, or a 7.1 setup? If you're using anything less than a 5.1 setup, that might explain (partly) what's going on.
also through hdmi, my onkyo txr606 picks the ps3 and the 360 both up as pcm.(even if i bitstream on ps3) my panasonic bd35 DID NOT do this. if a movie was dts master hd or dolbytruehd, it would show that on the receiver...not with the ps3 or 360 thoughYou're definitely doing something (likely multiple things) wrong.
First of all, the 360 should not be outputting PCM over HDMI. Your Onkyo display should say "direct" since the 360 will output everything as DD (assuming you have a 5.1 or more setup).
Second of all, if you're bitstreaming from the PS3, your receiver should not say that it's getting a PCM signal (with some exceptions). Your onkyo should be decoding a DD or DTS signal, either over optical or HDMI. Again, that's assuming you have a multichannel setup. If you only have 2-channel, that might explain why that's happening.
Third of all, there's a big difference between how your old BD player worked and how the PS3 Blu-ray player process audio. Your old BD player didn't decode the audio signal; your receiver did. Therefore, you saw "dts master hd" and "dolby truehd" on the display. However, on the PS3, if you want the HD audio codecs, you have to let the PS3 decode the audio and send the signal to your receiver as LPCM. It should say "Multichannel PCM" on your receiver's display. During playback of a Blu-ray, hit the "select" button. That will bring up the display for the disc. In the upper right corner of the screen, it will tell you what the original audio codec is (DD 5.1, DTS, Dolby TrueHD, DTS Master HD, etc.).

Hey Myth- I think you are confusing louder with better as people are saying. Since I have the Onkyo TX-SR605, I noticed the same thing when I first set up my system.
I think the root of the difference you hear is that the Onkyo TX-SR605 and TX-SR606 do not seem to apply bass management to multichannel PCM signals. So when you listen to your PS3 through optical, where the default is for the PS3 to bitstream Dolby Digital or DTS to your receiver, the bass management EQ and possibly other EQ tweaks are applied and the result is louder-sounding output.
This was discussed in more depth in the Receivers/Amps forum a while ago, and people (including myself) noticed the same thing you did. Technically, the sound isn't any clearer, it's just EQ'ed differently, so you'll have to turn it up when letting your PS3 do the decoding.
i'm going to give it a second go
let yall know how it goes

Ultimately if it truly sounds better to your ears then go with it.
after a slight rearrangement of my speakers, audessy calibration, the hdmi did sound a lot better
i cranked it up to only about 36:)

Yea but this one goes to eleven. :o

CaliCool 03-16-09, 04:40 PM This thread has a lot of good info... I'm not familiar with all this audiophile stuff myself but I have one question...
How do you guys get your PS3 an HDMI audio???
My Home Theater's a Samsung that went with my TV. (I just added cash, prolly a lot of them) I'm quite pleased with it as it can play HD DVD and shows up DTS, or Dobly Digital whenever I watch movies or play games. THe sound's clear to me and good, and I'm using an Optical Connection to and from the CD.
The question is... how do you gets get HDMI? Does buying a receiver solve this problem? My Samsung has one HDMI output that I used to connect to the TV. The PS3 also has one HDMI slot to connect to the TV... So I'm confused as to how you will achieve the full HDMI connection.
Sorry to derail the thread.

you need a receiver that has hdmi capabilities out and in:)
Yea but this one goes to eleven. :o

Old Spinal Tap reference. Don't feel bad, you've got to be middle aged to get it :D
CaliCool 03-21-09, 02:51 AM you need a receiver that has hdmi capabilities out and in:)
So how would the set up be? The PS3 only has one HDMI slot correct? HOw would I be able to generate true HD from my PS3?
As of right now... my PS3's HDMI is connected to the TV of course... then Optical to the receiver.
Is there a thread for what sound all games are, or a place i can find what games are lpcm, and what are dolby specifically with the ps3.
I brought my ps3 over to my xbox 360 freinds house (although I also own a 360 but all he has is a 360) the main thing he noticed playing drakes, and gran turismo which are all lpcm is in his words "Ps3 has better sound" His onkyo was getting lpcm, he didnt understand why it was better then dolby on 360, but i explained dolby is lossy compressed, and lpcm is loseless, and has higher bandwidth and sounds better. Again the main thing you get from lpcm, dolby true hd, dts master (and this applies to blue ray as well) is greater sound seperation, and clearer sound seperation.

as someone else stated earlier... you need a receiver that can handle LPCM via HDMI. You run your HDMI cable tot he receiver, then fun a second cable to the TV for the Video. The receiver processes the sound as needed and passes the video to your TV. Check out the AMPs/receivers section of the forum for more information on receivers that can handle LPCM via HDMI. There are several lower end receivers made by Onkyo (TX-SR 606, or 706) which can be had for less than $500.

i think one of the biggest problems with the xbox 360 is ms originally built it WITHOUT hdmi in mind. they just sort of slap it on there now without a care in the world(side note:360 only has hdmi 1.2 capabilities)
