I assumed this was a new model used to cancel out a potential price cut.

Reduce the 80GB to $299
Reduce the 160GB to $399
Release the 320GB for $499
Discontinue the 80GB model

Sound familiar?

Just so you know... it takes over 2 days to restore 220 GB. One time my ps3 had to rebuild its database and I lost all my folders/albums. Instead of re-inputting all the info again, I decided to restore a recent backup. Maybe it's because of my choice in external HDDs, but it takes a helluva long time. So instead of upgrading to a 500 GB HDD as originally planned, I have been erasing demos/videos on my 250 GB HDD as needed.

Congrats! I need to do the same thing, but for me it would be to keep ALL the demo's on it.

One of the great advantages of the PS3 over the xbox 360 is the ability to cheaply upgrade your hard drive when the bigger HD becomes available to the consumer mkt. When the PS3 first launched, I believe 200g was the biggest and now we can do 500, or more, don't know!

that can't be right, can it?

I just uploaded over 100gig to a fat32 drive on my computer and it took around 30 min. Double that takes 2 days on a ps3?

Uploading to a drive from your computer is different than restoring a backup. Don't forget that the PS3 uses its own encryption, and stuff. It's the stuff that gets ya.

True, but you'd at least think the encryption is optimized for the cell processors....

And if compressed, the compression algorithm is the same. There's no reason 200GB should take 2 freaking days! (other then laziness, or stupidity).

The first 75% takes a reasonable 6-7 hrs, but the last 25% slows down to a crawl. I use a 1TB WD MyBook Essential. I was hoping someone else could chime in, because you're not the only one who thinks this is rather bizarre. I like to keep all my demos and movie trailers, but no longer feel it is practical to do so (even though I am willing to continually upgrade my internal HDD). I guess it's not often that you have to restore, but still.... If someone has a different experience, please share.

I just got one for $74.99 shipped. 7200rpm drives have a habit of overheating inside PS3s. A 320GB 5400rpm drive will be faster than the stock drive, as much more data passes under the heads per revolution.

For those who are asking about replacing the harddrive. I would recommend using pliers to pre-loosen them. They strip easily, I have a computer set of screw drivers and still managed to strip one.

For those interested my 60gig HD was about full. It took about 1.5 hours to backup and then about 1.5 hours to restore. But physically swapping the HD was about 4-5 minutes. Would've been 2-3 if I hadn't stripped one.

But only 263GB free before install anything on PS3 since the OS reserved another 27GB out of the 290GB formatted. And even less after installed a few Capcom games since most require another 5GB disk space per game.

PS3 is like PC all over again that needs so much disk space to play games.

According to the product overview at Newegg, the enclosure is for IDE HDD.

You need an enclosure that for 2.5" HDD SATA HDD.

Most SATA enclosures will work with PS3 SATA HDD but some require the enclosure to be connected with both USB end to the PC USB ports for extra power.

It's difficult to know which enclosure only need one USB end to the PC port without trying it.

I have several enclosures. Some only need to be connected to single USB port while others need to be connected to two USB ports for extra power.

My recommendation is get an SATA HDD enclosure that comes with two headed USB cable.

I have an extra 250GB SATA HDD at home (which I removed from my new HP laptop - I threw a 500GB in it right away). I'm considering throwing the 250GB into my 80GB PS3. I have the little screwdrivers which work well for laptops but don't have the torx drivers. Does the PS3 use torx screws or the standard little ones?

It can be done, although its not as easy as the PS3 swap, and you can only go up to 120 gig as of now. You also have to buy a certain model of HDD, Google it and you'll find what you need. Its really not that difficult, and only costs around $50-$60.

Vortex3D
03-13-09, 04:30 PM
Accessories profit. Ever wonder how Microsoft can afford to sell the Arcade mode for $150.

If Microsoft does have 500GB HDD option, they can't see it for $400. It would have to be around $250-300 and makes 120GB too expensive at $150 and they would have to lower 120GB down to $100 or less.

High markup in accessories are the easiest profit. If we want it, we just have to buy it at whatever cost.

Personally, I still prefer X360 way of not requiring game to install to HDD. I only install games to HDD if I chose it, not forced to install. I play older games every so often and I hate having to waste 3-5GB of disk space on my PS3. Deleting the game install data is so impractical since it takes a while to reinstall the games that I only play to play for a short while each time. So, I had to upgrade to a larger HDD on my PS3 which increased the total cost of my PS3. I never felt having only 20GB HDD on my X360 if I don't install any game.

I hate to say this, because of the large game install size on many PS3 games (HAWX is 5.6GB install), I have been buying more games on X360.

How much did the 320gb HDD cost? Also, why a 5400 rpm instead of a 7200 rpm?

Probably for the same reason I put a 5400 320gb in mine.

There really isnt much of a point in spending the extra cash on a comperable 7200rpm HD since the performance doesnt increase bye much overall.

From what Ive, read about the only time you see anything noticable is during an inital game install and even then were talking about less than a few minutes difference. Almost no increase on actuall game booting, regular usage etc.

So really the slower factory spec is still speedy, uses less juice and runs a bit cooler [ doubt cooling would be any issue though since its about 2 degrees f more than a 5400 ]

I think I paid about $75.00 for my WD Scorpio 320gb. im looking forward to the terrabyte 2.5 drives when they hit the market :)

Bye the way I had no screw issues at all, I think the key is to use the proper size driver and go easy since the screws are pretty soft.

465GB sounds about right. I recovered from a nearly 80GB backup and can't remember the exact amount just after formatting.

No errors so far. Honestly didn't know of the issue before hand. The manufacturer's site mentions the interface goes UP TO 3.0gb making me think it's 1.5gb while running in the PS3.
